Welcome to the Autumn edition of Update, the interactive Learning

Resources magazine. Each section is packed full of useful tips and

resources to help you with your studies, assignments and research.

Click the images on each page to find out even more.

The magazine is split into several sections, each focusing on a different

curriculum area. We also have a general information section for

resources and tips which could help everyone in the college. If you can’t

find what you are looking for within the magazine, please contact a

member of Library, iPoint or e-Learning staff who will be happy to assist

Essential Bytes

Do your students want the skills to study well?

Do they need to improve their assignments?

The iPoint and Library teams have created six key tailor-made

sessions to support your students. These sessions are:

E-Safety

Ideal for in-class delivery, these sessions are CEOP

approved and explain how to stay safe online.

Harvard Referencing

These sessions can be adapted to meet the

needs of your students and cover plagiarism,

referencing and bibliographies.

Assignment Workshop

We can support students with researching

and structuring assignments. Sending us the assignment details beforehand will

enable us to create a bespoke session for your group’s specific needs.

Office 2010

Make sure your students are familiar with Office 2010 with our sessions on

Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. We can also provide students with

detailed training on how to create leaflets, posters or anything else they need to

complete their studies.

Athens & E-resources

Find out how to access electronic resources using

Athens. Learn how to make effective use of the

internet and how to search the library catalogue.

Basic Library and Computing Information

This session covers logging onto computers, changing

passwords and using e-learning. We also introduce

students to the library facilities.

Beef up your BlackBoard (Staff only)

As a follow up to the college conference on

Friday 19th October, why don’t you consider using

some of the Blackboard tools demonstrated

during this session on your own course area. They

couldn’t be easier to use. This includes:

Using a YouTube Mashup on your course.

Uploading your Assignment Briefs and letting students submit their

completed assignments back to you.

Creating a self-marking test.

Using a journal to log students’ work, progress or experience.

Using a discussion board to have an online discussion or debate.

Making your course more attractive and organised.

More information is available on Blackboard in the Staff Room. We have even created some quick videos to show how easy these things are to do.

If you prefer the personal touch, please contact Bobby Burchill (Ext. 3583)

or Simon Hill (Ext. 3160) who can work with you to develop your course

area. Please don’t be worried about using these tools, they are really great

and easy to use.

Smart Board Assistance (Staff Only)

Need help with optimising your Smart Board skills? The E-Learning Team

are offering training on how to use the new Smart Board software and

pens at a time and place to suit you. Please contact Bobby Burchill (ext.

Timetabling iPoint (Staff only)

We are receiving enquiries on which

computers are available for class bookings in

the iPoint Learning Centres. We thought we

would use the magazine to clarify our position

on this.

Broadway iPoint (Located on A Floor) – Class bookings are taken in

advanced through Mike Eden in Timetabling. Please e-mail Mike with your

request including date(s), time and the number of students. The iPoint

timetable will then be checked on ProSolution for availability and the

booking will be confirmed or declined. If you are booking after 4pm for

the next day, please speak to the iPoint staff directly on Ext. 3374.

Evolve iPoint (Located on Level 2) – Due to the high volume of drop

in usage at this site, we are unable to take any class bookings in advance. Please speak to Mike Eden for bookings in Broadway iPoint on Ext 3031.

Harty iPoint (Located in MH616) - Due to the high volume of drop

in usage at this site, we are unable to take any class bookings in advance.

New home for English Language books!

The English Language books in the library have moved. They are now kept

under the windows at the far end of the library. We also have language

packs with CDs and a wide range of Easy Reader books for you to

borrow.

BBC Skillswise

BBC Skillswise is a free-to-access website for adult numeracy and literacy

tutors and students. It contains printable worksheets and factsheets and

online games, videos and quizzes that can be used in class or by students

at home. They also cover Entry 3 and Level 1 of the Skills for Life

numeracy and literacy core curricula.
