LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Learn where Hindus worship.
Learn what a Hindu place of worship contains.
Hindu’s worship in a temple which may vary between a small hut to a very grand building.
The Hindu name for their temple is a
Mandir.
Mandirs are seen as a place where heaven meets earth,
so many are shaped like mountains.
The towers of a mandir are called
shikharas.
Mandirs and decorated very elaborately, with
many statues and paintings of gods and
goddesses.
There are many symbols in the Mandir,
especially the Om symbol. Om is a special
word said at the beginning and end of a
Hindu prayer.
Each mandir has one main god that it is dedicated to.
Inside the mandir is a shrine with an image of its main god, this is normally
placed inside a special alcove – this
shrine is called the murti.
People leave offerings such as flowers, fruit, water, milk, nuts or incense by the murti as a sign of respect for the God which the
temple is dedicated to.
These pictures show Murtis.
These pictures show Murtis to Ganesha from temples which are dedicated to
Ganesha. Ganesha is the God of success and overcoming obstacles.
Each mandir has a
mandir bellwhich worshipers ring when
they enter to announce their arrival to God.
Anyone entering a mandir must remove their shoes on entering. This is to show respect to God/Brahman.
