Learning How to Ride a Horse at

Camp Waziyatah

Camp Waziyatah is a summer camp for boys

and girls from ages 6 to 16. Located in Southern

Maine, the camp sits on 130 acres of land next

to a private lake and has been featured on the

Disney program Bug Juice. Of the more than 40

activities included in camp tuition, horseback

riding is one of the most popular.

Children of all ages enjoy the sense of

accomplishment and responsibility that comes

with riding horses, Camp Waziyatah Director

Gregg Parker says. As campers learn to ride,

they gain physical skills such as balance, muscle

awareness, and core strength.

Psychological and mental benefits include

connection to nature, enhanced concentration,

and the opportunity to overcome fears. Learning

to ride and care for a horse creates a connection

between the camper and the horse, which helps

to develop social skills and communication.

Outside of horseback riding, campers at Camp

Waziyatah have the opportunity to water ski, sail,

rock climb, play tennis, bounce on "the blob" (a

giant, inflatable kid-launcher in the lake!) and

much more.
