COURSE 210: GREAT THINKERS AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS

The course Great Thinkers and Social Movements continues in 2015, again with a focus on the

interplay of history, philosophy and biography in major social movements.

I have chosen to start the year by looking at the American Civil War (1861-1865), that took place

about 100 years after the American Revolution. This theme will take us until the end of the first semester.

It is generally assumed that the American Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery. Was this really

the case? And was the Civil War necessary to bring about the end of slavery in the USA? What kind of

person was Abraham Lincoln, the President who was central to the Civil War? And how realistic is the

movie Gone with the Wind, that Civil War epic we are all familiar with? These are just some of the

questions that will entertain us in first semester.

In 2015 the course will run twice a month during term time. Active participation of class members

in giving brief talks is assumed. All are welcome to enrol. The main theme for the second half of the year

has not yet been decided, and depends to some extent on the interest of class members who enrol at the

beginning of the year.

Course Tutor: Dr Cora Baldock

BOOK CLUB NEWS

Our first session for the year will take place on February 19 in the Seachange Classroom, 1.15pm to 3.15pm. Our novel is George Eliot’s Middlemarch. One critic stated:

“The novel is set in in a large English village in the early 1830’s and the whole of life is in it – romance and marriage, science and politics, the coming industrial revolution, the movement for reform, the increasing role of the press and wide-ranging argument about religion.”

New members who would like a book list for our monthly novels please contact me [email protected]

Learning Thru Culture

On 21st December a group of 20 members went on a coach tour to see the Gold Coast Christmas Lights. The last house we visited at Southport, was next day voted winner of the Council Award and deservedly so. The owners told us that it takes 3 months to install the over 3,000 lights. The feedback which I received from the members was very positive and I look forward to organising the event again this year. On Wednesday 14th January seven members of the group went by train to see Queensland Museum’s exhibition of “UNDRESSED, 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion” which was brought to Brisbane from the Victoria And Albert Museum in London. The exhibition featured more than 80 highlights of

the era, including Queen Victoria’s drawers, iron corsetry from the 1700s, bustles, men’s underwear, night shirts, beautiful negligées to corsets worn in the late 1800s and early 1900s to modern day bras & knickers. We then went to the City Town Hall where we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Shingle Inn

before going into the City Hall Museum to see the private collection of “Costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood”. It was free and a real trip down memory lane. The gowns were from movies of 1920s through to 1960s and featured costumes made for Gloria Swanson, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Ester Williams, Katherine Hepburn just to name a few. The creativity and sewing was exquisite. There were also showing scenes from some of the movies that the costumes were worn in. After a very enjoyable day we caught the train back to Helensvale, arriving there, as they say “tired but happy”.

Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR)

Dear Members, Have you booked your place? If not, do so now!

Ever wondered why you have to fill out a new form every time you see another doctor? Do you know that it takes time for a new doctor or hospital to get your past information from different

places? You need to update each doctor you see about new medications that may have been prescribed by

someone else or test results that they not be aware of. Australia's personally controlled electronic health record (PCEHR) system is a free and user friendly tool that permits you to securely gather, store, manage and share your health information. PCEHR was developed by the Australian Federal Government and is a safe and secure framework. If you have never used a computer or are only a beginner you are welcome to attend this workshop. Reza will assist you. Light refreshments will be served and on completion of the workshop. Each participant will receive a small gift. Where: The U3A Classroom, at the Hub, Billington Street, Labrador. When: Saturday 9am - 10.30am or 11am - 12.30pm Dates: 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th February and 7th March If you have friends or family over the age of 50 who would be interested in this workshop they are very welcome to attend. Please contact Heather Viney 5577 4014 Mobile 0437 740 142 or email [email protected]

ROLL UP, ROLL UP !!!!

One of our volunteer areas is the CLEANING ROSTER. Cleaners work in pairs and the total time volunteered is

usually 1 hour or less, once a term. The cleaning areas are U3A Office, Committee Room (next door) and U3A

Classroom. One person dusts and one person vacuums. NO HEAVY WORK. Think how fulfilled you will feel

volunteering to keep the areas neat and tidy for U3A Members. Don’t delay. Take this step today. We need you.
