11 Public transport

In big cities there is a great variety of public transport vehicles. You can take buses, trams, trolley-

buses, suburban trains or the underground to get to the wished place. Loads of city dwellers use

these vehicles instead of using their own cars because it’s a cheaper and less tiring way of

travelling. The disadvantage of going to work by car is that you can get into traffic jams during

rush hours and may easily be late for work unless you leave home in time.

Public transport vehicles are used not only by the local residents but also by a mass of commuters.

Although the taxi is a quick and comfortable means of transport, few people use it because it’s

rather expensive.

Trams and trolley-buses are environment-friendly because they work on electricity.

Underground railway plays a very significant role in passenger transport because it relieves road

traffic in a large measure. It is usually overcrowded during peak hours.

After getting on you have to punch your ticket. You should be aware of that you may be strictly

fined by a ticket inspector if you don’t have a ticket,

You may take the advantage of having a daily, weekly, monthly or even a yearly season ticket.

Lots of tourists prefer to buy a universal daily season ticket.

Students and pensioners are allowed to travel at a reduced rates. As far as I know people over 70

may travel free of charge..
