Lead with Significance With 15 years in corporate industry and 20
years at Deloitte under his belt, Dr. Janson Yap
knows what it takes to be a leader in an age of
unprecedented change.
Globalisation and technological disruptions
are profoundly shaping the economy. In
an age where process and capital changes
are recalibrating on all levels, interconnectivity
and interdependence are now integrated in the
leadership game.
With 35 years of corporate and professional
services experience, Dr. Janson Yap’s expertise in
management and risk intelligence has yielded rich
insights on what it means to lead in a world where
change keeps changing.
Leadership in a Volatile World
While certain leadership qualities, such as
integrity, commitment and passion, remain as
timeless leadership values, Dr. Yap acknowledges
that other values have come to the fore in an age
of rapid transformation.
Curiosity is foremost. Dr. Yap cites that a leader
who is comfortable staying within the boundaries
of calculated risks and safety brings you nowhere.
“The usual business environment will not be able
to cope with the changes of the white water
world. I think it’s ludicrous to think that a leader
who isn’t curious about what’s going to happen in
future can be a leader of any significance,” quips
Dr. Yap.
Interconnectivity also calls for an understanding
of cultural diversity. With modern workplaces
increasingly comprising a mix of groups, such as
baby boomers and millennials, as well as people
of different nationalities working together, leaders
should aim to build a culture of inclusivity among
diversity, in order to establish trust in their teams.
Furthermore, traditional leadership that once
took a more authoritarian approach is no longer
the go-to method. “Collaboration is absolutely
vital because the complexity of the environment
necessitate you to not be able to do everything
by yourself,” explains Dr Yap.
Stay a student
for Continuous
Upgrading
So how would he
advise professionals,
managers, executives and
technicians (PMETs) who want to
make their mark in the corporate world?
“I’ve found that the more I know, the more I don’t
know,” says Dr. Yap. “If PMETs want to succeed, they
have to accept that the world is disruptive, that this
may affect them, and adopt new ways to adapt via
continuous learning.”
He also advises young PMETs to gain more exposure
and awareness by working overseas. “Singapore is
part of the global ecosystem, and given our position
in the diverse Asian region, working overseas would
be the perfect opportunity to develop one’s cultural
intelligence,” shares Dr. Yap.
Above all, Dr. Yap advocates a commitment to a
lifetime of learning, upgrading and refining oneself
as a fundamental part of leadership. “It’s a journey
about continuously adapting to the changing
environment and being relevant,” shares Dr. Yap.
Lastly, develop oneself to be resilient because the
future is volatile and uncertain.

“A leader needs to do things that have never been done before and also make informed
judgments in order to stay afloat.”
How to Score During a Job InterviewStaffOnDemand founder Christine Liu knows
which candidates tend to snag the job.
Christine Liu loves a challenge. In fact, she
enjoys solving problems so much that the
appeal of creating a digital solution to
match employers to the right talents in the fastest
and most efficient way possible lured her from the
world of banking to become a technopreneur.
“It’s all about identifying a problem that is big
enough to solve,” says Liu with a smile. Liu
founded StaffOnDemand, a human resource
technology firm that uses a cloud-based
recruitment management system to solve the
simple yet often challenging issue of matching the
best talent to the right employers.
As the Head of Partner Acquisitions, Liu regularly
connects with employers to find out their most
pertinent manpower concerns. In her many
encounters with hiring managers, Liu has gained
an understanding on employers’ expectations and
knows which candidates tend to score the job.
Customise Your Resume
Understandably, it is frustrating when job-seekers
repeatedly fail to net job interviews. Liu believes
the most common mistake job-seekers make
is submitting a generic resume. Hiring managers
go through hundreds of applications, and if
there’s not an element that makes yours stand
out, then they’re definitely going to pass on
you as well.
As such, ensure your resume is distinctive. “Cater
to the employer that you’re applying to, and
specifically say how the skillset you have can help
the company,” says Liu.
Be Unabashedly You
When you finally snag a one-in-a-million chance
at an interview, you would want to leave a perfect
impression. Liu advocates playing up one’s unique
personality so let your enthusiasm, resourcefulness,
and creativity shine as they shape the impression
you leave behind.
“A different perspective about how to do that task
that’s required of you in that role would be quite a
refreshing change for employers who are used to
hearing off-the-mill sort of answers,” explains Liu.
The Best Investment
Instead of focusing too much on their academic
background and work experience, job-seekers
need to figure out how they play an important
role in growing the organisation they wish to
join. “Make it crystal clear to your prospective
employers why hiring you is the best investment
they can make,” she says.
If you have a track record to demonstrate, go
ahead. Let your interviewer know what you have
helped your previous or current organization
achieve, and how you could do the same for them.
Ultimately, whether it is picking up a new skill or
effecting a change, Liu says it is good to share with
your prospective employer how you see yourself
growing together with the company if you were to
join the firm.
“Make it crystal clear to your prospective
employers why hiring you is the best investment
they can make.”

Take Your Brand to Another Level
Marketing guru Imran Mohamad possesses sure-
fire strategies to propel your business to success.
“What we try to do is take a
message, take a business and
take a belief and amplify it for
them – the business owners,” quips Imran
Mohamad, the founder and Managing Director
of The Leverage Group.
Imran learned to run a successful business the
hard way, trying his hand at different ventures
six times before finding his niche on the seventh
attempt. In fact, his first business put him and his
then-partner in more than six figures of debt. But
today, he helps companies achieve exponential
growth through savvy marketing customized for
every client.
“When it comes to business, there are many
external factors that are outside of one’s control
[but] the one who wins is the one who learns
from data, tweaks it for his or her purposes and
executes the most,” shares Imran.
Overcoming Change
As cliché as it sounds, a stumbling block that
businesses often face is the fear of change. “The
technicalities are easy but business owners see
everything as their baby, and the fear is adopting
a method that goes against everything they have
done or learned over the years,” explains Imran.
But Imran knows best how to help these
businesses that constantly worry about external
factors beyond one’s control. Backed by case
studies and market research, Imran helps clients
focus on everything that’s within control instead.
Be Your Own Media
We are in a special time and place where you
can literally be your own media. In a time where
digital marketing is the new normal, Imran feels
that being clear about your objectives, what you
represent and who your audience is is half the
battle won.
And you can’t be clear if you’re speaking to
everyone.
If someone is viewing your profile, your website,
remember that it is one person on his mobile
phone – it’s not the mass. Whether you’re building
your CV on LinkedIn or creating a profile on
Facebook, be really clear of who you’re speaking
to. Only then will you be able to connect with
the right audience, and possibly find what you’re
looking for.
As great as the online platforms are, the human-
to-human connection cannot be removed so tap
into the offline platforms as well. Explore avenues
such as events or partnerships to reach out to your
target audience. “Everything you do has to speak
the same language, has to align,” shares Imran.
Building your brand is a series of deliberate steps.
Whether it be for yourself or for your organization,
opportunities are created when you craft the right
image and deliver the right message. The network
you cultivate, the events you attend; these add to
your brand and it’s definitely not by chance.
“We are in a special time and place where
you can literally be your own media.”
