Golf Ball Magic in Photoshop Elements -‐ Wrap 3D text with surface texture This video is a lesson on how to wrap your name on a golf ball with 3D surface texture. It is meant to be a lesson on how to use many of the tools in Photoshop Elements so please don't comment on how I took so long to do something very simple. Follow the steps and have fun:
1. Open a golf ball photo (Microsoft Clipart is a good place to start to look). 2. Make a circle selection around the ball using the elliptical marquee and holding the
alt/opt shift key. 3. Once you have the ball selected press ctrl/cmd J to make a new layer with just the
ball. 4. Click on the new layer (layer 1) and select 'convert to black and white' from the
Enhance menu. Select Infrared from the options. 5. Make the ball high contrast using ->Enhance ->Highlights and Shadows. 6. Make only layer 1 visible and 'save as' displacement map. Save it on your desktop so
it is easy to find. 7. Turn off layer 1 and make the original background layer visible. 8. Using the text tool and a bright color, type your name in the middle of the golf ball
using a thick font like 'stencil'. 9. Make another circular selection around your name using the elliptical marquee tool.
Using alt/opt shift will help. 10. From the Filter menu, choose ->Distort ->Spherize. Use 72. (when asked to simplify
layer, choose 'yes') 11. Ctrl/cmd D to get rid of the marching ants. 12. From the Filter menu, choose ->Distort ->Diplace. Use 4 or play with the depth by
changing the numbers, then point to the file named displacement map you saved on your desktop.
13. Change the blending mode on your text layer to 'Multiply'. 14. Ctrl/cmd click on your text layer. Marching ants will appear in the shape of your
name. 15. Press ctrl/cmd-shift-I to make an inverse of your selection. 16. Click on layer 1 (your high contrast golf ball layer). 17. Press the delete key. 18. Change the opacity of your text layer to 80. 19. Save out as a jpeg or png file. 20. Done.
