Charcoal Drawing 1. In the Layers palette, unlock the background layer by double-clicking on the padlock. 2. Hold the cmd/ctrl key while clicking on the new layer icon twice. This will create two new layers below the image. 3. Reset the default palette colours by pressing D on the keyboard. 4. In the Layers palette, click on the bottom transparent layer. 5. Press the cmd-delete (Mac) or ctrl-backspace (PC) to fill the layer with white. 6. From the Filter menu, select Artistic then Dry Brush. 7. Adjust the sliders to the desired effect. 8. In the Layers palette, hold down the alt/opt key and click between the first and second layer. 9. In the Layers palette, click on the center layer. 10. In the Toolbox, select the Brush tool. 11. In the Options bar, select a the chalk brush from the natural brushes 2 dropdown box and adjust the opacity to 30+/- 10%. 12. Adjust the size of the brush with the [ ] keys or with the slider in the Options bar. 13. Paint with light strokes until you get the desired effect.
