Nearly 19 million Americans used prescription drugs, such as pain relievers, tranquilizers, and stimulants, non-medically in the past year. Prescription drug misuse and abuse can happen to anyone, touching people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. This critical issue is sweeping the nation and can have severe consequences, as 64,000 lives are lost each year. In order to keep your family and community safe, education is key. Dedicated to ensuring that families receive safe medications and patient services, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and its member state boards of pharmacy remind us that it's important to have an open line of communication with your pharmacist about safe medicine usage. Pharmacists are a valuable source for getting answers to questions about prescription medications, including opioids, and over-the-counter medicines. To help further educate the public about the opioid epidemic and the importance of safe medicine usage, the NABP has released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) titled "It Could Happen To You" (:60, :30, :15). The PSA features pharmacist and NABP Past President Joe Adams, RPh, who lost his son to an opiate overdose. In the PSA, Joe explains how no one is immune to this growing problem and urges patients to talk to their pharmacists about safe medication use. We hope you will help communicate these critical messages with your listeners by airing this PSA as soon and as often as possible. The PSA, which encourages listeners to visit nabp.pharmacy has no end date for use. Founded in 1904, NABP is the impartial, professional organization that works tirelessly to support its member state regulatory boards of pharmacy at the national and state level to protect public health each day. NABP aims to ensure the public's health and safety through its pharmacist license transfer and pharmacist competence assessment programs, as well as through its VIPPS, VAWD, and DMEPOS accreditation programs. Prescription drug abuse can happen to anyone and it can have severe consequences: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 16,000 people die per year from painkiller overdose. To help spread further awareness of the opioid epidemic, the NABP is the educating the public about safe medicine usage and the importance of speaking with your pharmacist about prescribed medication.
