LIVE DEMONSTRATION: MANAGING TOOLS WITH RFIDEPC Gen 2 RFID tags and readers, as well as GPS and cellular technology, are beingemployed by building, construction and highway contractors to track tools’ locationsand status on work sites. With RFID tags applied to the equipment, software can iden-tify which tools are within read range of the interrogator, and thereby know whetherthey are still in storage within that container or vehicle, or have been removed by theconstruction staff. A live demonstration of the technology will be presented.

This track will take an in-depth look at the elements of an RFID infrastructure, including tags, readers and software, as well as the roles they play.

TECHNOLOGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE

RFID AS A LEAN TOOL IN MANUFACTURINGRFID is a stable technology that can make a real impact for businesses today—notjust 10 years down the road. The key to using RFID as a lean tool is the educationand buy-in of operations-level IT technicians and production support-staff mem-bers. Learn how to introduce your operations staff to the uses, constraints and appli-cations of RFID, and gain an understanding of how the technology can make adifference in your day-to-day obligations for operational improvement.

WHAT CAPABILITIES ARE NEXT FOR THE UHF GEN 2 STANDARD?The original goal of the UHF Gen 2 protocol was to enhance a retailer's ability toidentify, count and track items. But a UHF Gen 2 tag can accomplish much morethan mere inventorying. Now on the horizon is the industry's next wave ofapplications, including loss identification and prevention, and item anti-counterfeiting.To enable these applications, the community is enhancing the UHF Gen 2 protocolto include these and other, even more forward-looking capabilities. Attendees willbe give an advance preview of RFID's future.

MAKING THE MOVE TO UHF TAGSIn 2006, NASCAR implemented an RFID program. To ensure the integrity of its chas-sis certification process, the organization elected to utilize low-frequency (LF) tags.In 2011, NASCAR expanded the program and transitioned to ultrahigh-frequency(UHF). The UHF tags and readers are now utilized to increase the integrity of the in-spection process, while also reducing staffing requirements. Hear how the organiza-tion is using the technology to ensure that Goodyear tires are read and verified.

LOW-COST UBIQUITOUS PASSIVE RFID REAL-TIME LOCATION-SENSING SYSTEMA groundbreaking real-time location system (RTLS) developed at the University ofCambridge, will allow retailers, airlines and other businesses to inexpensively andeffectively monitor these items’ locations in real time. Learn how this solution willhelp RFID technology to move away from a conventional narrow-portal approach toa ubiquitous-coverage solution.
