Lean Overview 5S Overview Check Your Knowledge Take Notes Dig Deeper

Introduction to

Lean Concepts

What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean is the relentless pursuit of the

elimination of waste.

Waste is anything that consumes resources,

but does not add value for the customer.

In general terms, customers see value in

lower costs, higher quality, and increased

flexibility.

What Lean Is Not

Lean is not a program of the month.

It is a new way of thinking about our work.

It is never finished.

Lean is not about cutting headcount.

It is about utilizing our people better.

It is about increasing our value-added work.

Lean is not a cost-cutting program.

It is about increasing value, which means better quality and increased flexibility in addition to lower cost for the customer.

Learning To See

There are Seven Types of Waste:

Overproduction Waiting

Transport Extra Processing

Inventory Motion

Defects

The customer is not willing to pay for these.

There are Lean tools to help you see these

wastes.

Lean Tools

Value Stream Mapping

5S (Workplace Organization)

Visual Management

Pull Systems (Kanban)

Work Flow or Flow Manufacturing

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
