Types of Fundraising

1. Internal - For your own school Examples: purchase of technology, outdoor play structure, etc.

2. External - For other Charities or Causes Heart & Stroke Foundation, Terry Fox, etc. External groups want your school to support their cause (e.g.: building a school in a third world country)

3. External community group using TDSB space

when hosting their fundraising activity TDSB staff will not handle any cash collection.

•Must be approved by the principal.

•Is a collaborative local school activity among principal, school council, parents, students, school staff, and community.

•Aims to raise funds to enhance and support school initiatives.

•May include fundraising events, product sales, donations, sponsorships and grants.

Use of Fundraising Proceeds Acceptable

•Ceremonies, awards, plaques or prizes •Establishment of scholarships or bursaries •Extra-curricular activities •Field trips for students who could not otherwise afford it •Guest speakers or presentations •Purchasing materials, equipment & non-curriculum books •Nutrition programs

Not Acceptable •Paying TDSB staff for services •Core curriculum materials •Goods or services from TDSB employees/ Community members that give rise to potential conflict-of-interest •Support for political activities, groups or candidates

NOTE: ALL capital projects, school yard/sport facility improvements must work with the Facilities Services Team Leader and follow the Viability Review process prior to any fundraising taking place.

School Fundraising Campaigns

1. Set a clear fundraising goal, that is, what is the total amount of money you need to raise?

2. Consider a variety of ways to generate the funds; for example, product sales, events, grants, & donations.

3. Create a fundraising plan. 4. At the end of the campaign evaluate what

How does BD support schools and school councils?

Help you put together a fundraising plan. Maintain a list of approved fundraising vendors, grants and awards. Coordinate with General Accounting re donation tax receipts and Finance re online donations.

Donations (Monetary & In-kind) • May take the form of gifts or cash to support a specific

school, or TDSB initiative. • Donations are NOT tied to specific recognition and/or

endorsement requirements. • TDSB will issue tax receipts for monetary donations of $25

and over if paid by cheque. If a donation is made through School Cash Online, then a donor receives a tax receipt for any amount.

IMPORTANT NOTES

• TDSB does not issue tax receipts for services or gift certificates. • Computer and some electronic products may not be accepted by

TDSB as these may not meet the specifications or required safety standards.

• We encourage schools to use this tool to collect online donations.

• Allows schools to collect and track donations online. • Donors will receive tax receipts for any amount. • Donors select the school they wish to donate to from

the Fund Destination drop-down box. • Donors will also have to create an account with their

name and mailing address. This information is used to issue the tax receipt.

We may also review applications prior to submission to ensure:

✓ Legal compliance; ✓ Reporting and/or audit requirements; and ✓ Recognition requirements.

How does BD support schools and school councils?

•Research the funding organization to ensure it aligns with TDSB’s mission and values. •Review the grant to confirm it aligns with our policies and procedures. •Ensure TDSB schools and departments are eligible to apply. •Coordinate with Legal department for review and approval of any agreement prior to submission. •Coordinate with Communications & Public Affairs to ensure the donor recognition requirements comply with our policies and procedures. 23

If your school is announced as a winner, we will …

• Guide schools/departments through the next steps of the application process.

• Review and provide feedback on any contract or agreement.

• Coordinate with Legal, Risk Management and other departments for review and, if required, modification of an agreement.

• Coordinate with TDSB’s Communications department regarding any recognition requirements, or media-related events.
