4 | LEADERSHIP MONTGOMERY 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Special Advertising Publication | June 2012
You just never know who you'regoing to end up meeting and whatyou're going to end up learningfrom them at LeadershipMontgomery. We in the CoreProgram Class of 2012 just jumpedinto each experience headfirst, whether it was suiting up in afirefighter's gear, having a dialoguewith the County Executive, tramping around a water recoveryplant, or visiting an Islamic temple. We also took time to record theepiphanies that came with eachpresentation or experience, andthere were plenty of those. Ourlearning leaps of faith were wellrewarded.
Yet when I asked a cross-sample ofclassmates what was the best thingabout LM and Class of 2012, theydidn't respond with all the coolthings we got to do or cool placeswe got to go or statistics wedigested. Instead, each personanswered with some permutation of"getting to know my classmates"and "the friendships I made."
It's not surprising, really. We cametogether as individuals, and thanksto adept facilitating at our openingretreat by Eliot Pfanstiehl, CEO ofStrathmore and Founding BoardMember of LeadershipMontgomery, we became acommunity.
Keith Danos, Chief FinancialOfficer of Jewish Foundation forGroup Homes, said, "I neveranticipated I would be able todevelop relationships with as manypeople in such a short time." Thatsense of community strengthenedeach time we gathered and grew aswe met leaders and visionaries invarious sectors of the County andstarted working on our NonprofitDiscovery projects.
Ron Dimaranan, Director ofBusiness Development for Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, enjoyed "seeing and learning fromeveryone's leadership styles and
how I can improve mine. And howtype A personalities can get along!"Discussions and experiences relatedto the workings of the County andpromoting the well-being of ourcitizens both enhanced and wereenhanced by the personal bonds weshared. As Dr. Anna MariaIzquierdo-Porrera, ExecutiveDirector of Care 4 Your Health, putit, "The people I've met are aphenomenal group of individuals. For me, it was the intenseconversations that have been themost rewarding parts of the wholeexperience."
Our Nonprofit Discovery projectsspanned education, literacy, thearts, disabilities, homelessness, andhealth. We learned about all thegood that was being done byindividuals and organizations andour government, and so much morethat was still needed. Hopefully thetools we acquired in LeadershipMontgomery would equip us betterto tackle the complexities of thechallenges facing the County.
Leadership Montgomery providedrare windows into the present andthe future of our County, from theAgricultural Reserve to the arts, from planning to public safety.Class members were encouraged toask questions and offer our ownperspectives, whether it was insmall group discussions on diversityor a no-holds-barred dialogue oneducation with the new schoolsuperintendent.
Almina Khorakiwala, VicePresident for The Walker MarchantGroup, marveled that "there werethings in the County I'd never seenbefore, innovative ideas and placesthat were models for how to dothings. One of my favorites wasthe Annapolis session and theaccess to lawmakers, being able tolearn and understand the processand how we can all be bettercitizens."
Deborah Broder, Vice President of
BSO Strathmore, BaltimoreSymphony Orchestra, wasimpressed "by the opportunity tolearn more about the incredibleresources in Montgomery Countyand resources the Countygovernment throws behind them."
Susan Burkinshaw, owner of SnapFitness, echoed this, saying she'simpressed "to know so much goeson behind the scenes to makeMontgomery County better--somany things we as a communityneed to participate in to keep thingsgoing, and going right."
Many times we saw the power ofone individual to make a difference, but also the exponential increase inmaking a difference that can occurwhen individuals and organizationscollaborate effectively. We didn'twait to graduate to start puttingthat into action, buildingpartnerships across ourorganizations and volunteeringindividually for each other's petprojects.
My own favorite moment cameduring a break-out meeting with ascientist talking about hisorganization's research onAlzheimer's. In passing, he used theterm "community of purpose." Hecontinued talking, but my brainhad stopped at that term. I love theidea of "community of purpose"and I also think it is a great way todescribe LM and our class. Ourcommunity of purpose is to becomemore informed stewards of ourCounty's people, environment, andinfrastructure, and to createconnections for sharinginformation, ideas, and resourcestoward that purpose.
Whatever achievements, jobs, education, or opinions classmatesbrought to the table of the Class of2012, everyone checked their egosat the door. DeRionne Pollard,President of Montgomery College, perhaps summed up best thepersonal connection we all made:
"The most rewarding thing for mehas been making new friends out ofcontext."
Our class year may be over, but thecommunity is forever.

By Janet Lowenbach (SLM '12)
There is a big difference betweenknowing and understanding. I lived inMontgomery County for 42 yearsbefore joining Senior LeadershipMontgomery (SLM). I had long agowitnessed the transition from thequaint one-story buildings onWisconsin Avenue to the massive AirRights Building, from the picturesqueChevy Chase cottages to the imposingMcMansions. I had seen theescalation of the traffic; the closing, building, and rebuilding of theschools; the waves of ethnicallydiverse neighbors, the octopus-likeexpansion of the roads.
Although I saw these changes, I didn'tknow the pulse of it, the press ofactive public servants that wouldmanage it, and the escalatingpopulation that would need services.Nor did I know the people I wouldmeet in the SLM class of 2012 withwhom I would learn how the Countyworked, how we provide leadershipto those who provide services.
We bonded in the first meeting whereEsther Newman, Founder andExecutive Director of LeadershipMontgomery, led an exercise in whichwe "met" our ancestors, people whomigrated over the generations fromAsia, Europe, and Africa and thensettled in Montgomery County. Ournew friendships in hand, weembarked on a journey - over eightmonths of travel and meetings - tofind the undiscovered parts of theCounty.
On a magic bus tour from Rockvilleto Upcounty areas, we stopped atButton Farm, where I was moved totears to learn that MontgomeryCounty residents had slaves. "I felthow cruel the institution of slaverywas, and I was proud that ourforefathers had the physical andmental stamina to withstand thistreatment and that it didn't enslavetheir minds," classmate Margot Hallsaid later about the experience.
The County spread out belowus from the amazing vantagepoint of the traffic monitoringplane. Caravans of trafficmoved below from the greennorthern part of the Countyover to the Potomac River andthen through the burgeoningtowns of Clarksburg andGermantown.
The ride-alongs with thepolice and fire departmentsoffered a window into thosedangerous and effective publicservices. "Traveling with themedical unit of the firedepartment was wonderful,"said Sybil Greenhut. "Theywere so kind and professionalto a patient in medical crisis. As a nurse, I saw excellentpatent care." As for myself, Ifelt right at home watchingtelevision with the firefightersin a row of giant leather chairsand then, startled when thebell announced a fire, jumpinginto the big ladder truck.
We held our breath, collectively, whenthe door to the Montgomery CountyCorrectional Facility shut behind us.
But what a surprise! The jail wasnothing like TV prisons - with theirbarred cells, dark corridors, and nastyguards.
"I was surprised by the very openand trusting environment that existedbetween inmates and staff," MarilynMassey-Ball said, "and the level ofeducational opportunities andemployment assistance provided tosupport offenders' rehabilitation andre-entry into the community."
In the program called Government101, we saw that the Countygovernment was active and alive."The legislative analysts made thebudget more understandable," SallySeawright noted, "and theyemphasized the high expectations theCounty has for service."
On an uncharacteristically warmwintry day, we crossed the foot bridgefrom the parking lot over MinnehahaCreek to the unique buildingsscattered about Glen Echo Park.
"I was most inspired by the GlenEcho Partnership," Peter Vaslow said,"in which the community and twoindependent and powerfulgovernment agencies (Federal andMontgomery County) could worktogether to successfully deal withfunding issues, save Glen Echo, rebuild it, and even expand itspurpose and function!"
The purple and gold seats at TheMusic Center at Strathmore vibratedwith light on our Arts day. "I havebeen a fan of the arts in MontgomeryCounty for a long time," said BobLevey. "It was very instructive to seeStrathmore from the inside."
A spring ice storm rained downglistening diamonds as a former
mayor led us on a tour among thehidden trees and Victorian houses ofWashington Grove. In the afternoon,we learned that there was "life aftergraduation" from SLM.
We could continue the connections wemade during our tour of the Countyand exploration of each other. I madenew friends and benefited from thesupport of the class network in mysearch for a job. Others vowed to stayconnected to grow and to serve theCounty and the LeadershipMontgomery organization that hadgiven us so much.
I am so grateful to all the people wemet: the County officials andnonprofit leaders who serve theCounty and to Founder and ExecutiveDirector Esther Newman, ProgramDirector Kati Gimes and mycolleagues in the SLM of 2012 whogave us so much in this single yearand will stand in memory as thereason we continue to work together.

Outstanding Leader Award
nAward Sponsor:
By Eliot Pfanstiehl(Founding Board and CoreRetreat Facilitator), ChiefExecutive Officer,StrathmoreThere are heroes who walk amongus each day who defy the dashingtextbook caricature and deny theirown heroic status. Yet we can seethem more clearly in the rearviewmirror of life as are able toexamine the path they trod and seethe victories they won once thedust has cleared. They are the quietheroes of confident, bold andprincipal driven action who saw afuture most of us could not andpursued it with dogged persistenceothers would not. They are theones who advanced when othersretreated. Who spoke out whenothers shied away. Who dreamedwhen others slept.
Charles A. "Chuck" Lyons ('95),Chairman of The Gazette
Newspapers, has been such a hero inMontgomery County. The 2012Outstanding Leader Award, sponsored by Sandy Spring Bank, recognizes exemplary leadership thathas had a significant impact on thelives of County citizens. Chuck Lyons'leadership in business, journalism, community, education and the arts iswhat made him the ideal candidatefor this honor. Not only has he madesignificant contributions throughoutour State and County in his ownright, but he has given heart to somany others by his example andhelped them to make their own mark.Chuck firmly believes in "Doing theright thing," no matter the cost orpopularity of the cause.
In 1997, Chuck served as Chair ofMontgomery's Promise to itsChildren and Youth, which resultedin The Gazette adopting Viers MillElementary School and creating amentoring program for employeesand students. Lyons set the exampleby mentoring a young boy namedMario every week. The programsoon expanded to include anewspaper club and an annualcharity drive by Gazette employees. The program is still active after 15years and has served more than 500students with weekly one-on-onementoring sessions or after schoolactivities. Chuck rarely missed hisown tutoring appointment despitehis busy professional schedule
Eleven years ago The Gazette, underthe leadership of Chuck Lyons andin a partnership with LockheedMartin and Marriott International, created the County CompaniesCaring Breakfast for InterfaithWorks. Former Executive DirectorBecky Wagner ('01) described itspurpose as "bringing together
people to buy expensive scrambledeggs and to hear and understand theneeds of the low incomecommunity." Interfaith Works is acoalition of more than 140congregations of diverse faithshelping more than 30,000vulnerable men, women andchildren each year with advocacyand social service programs. For 10out of its 11 years, Chuck Lyons hasbeen the emcee, honoring thevolunteers and the businesses thatthe partnership brought together toachieve these remarkablecommunity services.
In 1999, he was the recipient of theSalute to Youth Award presented bythe Greater WashingtonMetropolitan YMCA. Lyons washonored in 1998 for his service toyouth by the Boys and Girls Club,Montgomery Chapter, and thePoints of Light national award forvolunteerism. He is a graduate ofLeadership Montgomery and PastPresident of its Board of Directorsand is a graduate of LeadershipMaryland. He also served on theMontgomery County EconomicAdvisory Council and was amember of the Maryland Chamberof Commerce Board.
Lyons was a founding Boardmember of the Montgomery CountyCommunity Foundation, he co-chaired the MontgomeryCommunity College HumanitiesEndowment Campaign, and he wasa member of the capital campaignfor the Reginald S. Lourie Center tocreate a new Children's Center.
Chuck Lyons joined the StrathmoreBoard of Directors in January 1994when their budget was $630,000and the Music Center was only apipedream. He chaired Strathmore's
first million dollar capital campaignto renovate and expand the historicStrathmore Mansion and housed theentire Strathmore Foundation staffoffices at the Gazette printing plantduring the renovation. Chuck wasthe passionate and courageouscommunity leader who, withCounty Executive Doug Duncan, lobbied the County and StateLegislatures to secure the public andprivate funding needed to constructand operate the Center.
In total, Chuck served as Chair forthree terms and then returned in anemergency to finish the remainder ofhis successor's term for to make surethe Music Center project came tofruition. That was nine and a halfyears of service and four and halfyears of dedicated leadership of theStrathmore Board while he wasrunning four newspaper companiesin his day-job.
Teddy Roosevelt once described aleader as someone who "at best, knows in the end the triumph of highachievement: and who at worst, if hefails, fails while daring greatly, so thathis place shall never be with thosecold and timid souls who knowneither victory nor defeat."
Chuck Lyons works hard, expectsmuch, writes truth and dreams big.We need more leaders like Chuck. His legacy should be a lesson tothose who would seek to buildcommunity here in MontgomeryCounty. Sometimes, he said, "It'shard to do the right thing," but inthe end, it made the difference.
Chuck Lyons will receive $1,000 inrecognition of his leadership andanother $1,000 for the charity of hischoice. He will donate the monies toLeadership Montgomery.

Youth Leadership Montgomery (YLM)is a two-part program based on apartnership between YLM andMaryland Leadership Workshops(MLW) that provides an experience todevelop leadership skills andcommunity awareness forMontgomery County public orindependent high school studentsentering grades 9-12.
Maryland Leadership Workshops(www.mlw.org) has been conductingpeer-led programs for middle and highschool students for over 55 years.Through workshops, hands-onactivities and individualized actionplans, students from around the stateof Maryland strengthen their skills anddevelop their own potential to lead atschool and in the community.
During the week-long residential MLWsummer session at Washington Collegein Chestertown, MD, the students getto know each other by participating indaily workshops and have theopportunity to spend time on a collegecampus.
In the fall, the young leaders learnabout the role of nonprofitorganizations and civic engagement inour society through the example ofpassionate leaders, as well as hands-onactivities. To understand theimportance of charitable giving, theyresearch nonprofit organizations inMontgomery County that provideservices to populations or causes thestudents feel passionate about. After avisit to the nonprofits, they decide toaward a generous donation of $1,000to the organization they feel is mostdeserving. The money comes from theRoberta F. and Lawrence A. ShulmanYouth Leadership Endowment. Settingthe criteria and awarding the money isalways a challenging task for thestudents.
"YLMwas a uniquely worthwhileexperience for my daughter. As muchas she did extremely well academicallyin school, the additional exposure topeers from different racial/ethnic andsocio-economic backgrounds, exercisesin leadership skills, and discussions ofcurrent social issues greatly expandedher horizon and, we believe, betterprepared her for life beyond high
school." - Betty Lam, Parent
The Pettit Family CharitableFoundation has been a programsponsor for the past 11 years. DickPettit explains why: "We have chosento support the Youth MontgomeryLeadership program because it giveskids from different schools and inmany instances different socio-economic backgrounds, theopportunity to work together for thecommon goal of a better community. We believe it is one of the beginningsteps in producing the next generationof leaders for Montgomery County."
After graduation, class membersembark on new adventures, some ofthem continuing high school, somegoing on to college. They'll alwaysremember what they learned aboutthemselves and the leadership skillsthey gained.
"In the beginning of the program, Iwas a reserved person because Ithought people would judge me fromwhat I am saying. Additionally, I'vefound that most of the members areolder than me and that made me morenervous. But as time passed, I graduallybecame more comfortable with mypeers and enjoyed how we allsupported each other. MLW and YLMwere a great experience for me and Igreatly recommend these programs toa teenager."- Adini Parikh (YLM '12).
According to Ranjit S. "Ron" Dhindsa('01), President of the MLW ProgramBoard, "There is no greater feelingthan enabling and inspiring youngpeople to find their passions, gainconfidence, build life skills, and worktogether to improve their schools andcommunities."
Leadership Montgomery would like torecognize and thank all the individualsand organizations that made thisprogram a success.
