NFL LEADERSHIP

ARTICLE REVIEW

▸ NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has come under fire as of late for being a poor leader who doesn’t know how to handle it.

▸ There has been a call by many to have him step down or relinquish some of powers to other governing bodies.

▸ http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/2015/01/29/nfls-biggest-target-commissioner-roger-goodell-challenged-to-redefine-his-role-as-leader-after-ray-rice-and-deflategate/22554331/

NFL LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP

▸ Leadership is not a defined universal term with set ideas.

▸ Many different ideas and theories go into a persons leadership styles to determine what kind of leader he/she may be.

▸ What works may be dependent on what kind of group they have control over.

NFL LEADERSHIP

NFL COMMISSIONER

▸ The NFL Commissioner is probably the most high profile job in sports today, as it may just be the toughest in sports

▸ The NFL is an currently topping $11 billion in revenues

▸ This type of money involvement and popularity only adds to the pressure Roger and whoever is the NFL commish has to deal with

NFL LEADERSHIP

RODGER GOODELL

▸ Took over as the commissioner of the NFL in 2006

▸ He has been at the forefront of the increase in the value and popularity of the NFL

▸ He has help expanded the league in many ways

▸ But he also has very poorly handled other situations that have brought many to question his overall ability to be the man at the head of the NFL offices

NFL LEADERSHIP

INCIDENTS THAT HAVE HURT GOODELL OF LATE

▸ Ray Rice-mishandled domestic violence issue, originally only gave him a 2-game suspension despite NFL Offices having footage of what he did. Following media and fan pressure, Rice was suspended indefinitely which ended u being a full-season.

▸ Deflategate Sage (Tom Brady)- Goodell’s biggest mistake was him trying to make a statement by showing the league that he could bring down even the leagues biggest stars. He rushed due process in order to tag Brady with a suspension even though he did not have enough evidence to do so

▸ Goodell has also never been the players favorite. The suspension he gives out can be inconstant and it ends up as a cause for concern for the NFLPA

NFL LEADERSHIP

THINGS GOODELL HAS DONE THE MEDIA ISN’T PRAISING HIM FOR

▸ Goodell has done a good job of creating a new personal conduct policy that is more inclusive of domestic violence.

▸ Has continued to preach NFL Globalization

▸ Was able to help get a team back into the massive Los Angeles Market

▸ Dispute some grey area about the NFL’s lack of acknowledgement about concussions, he has helped created a safer game, that is trying the best it can in cutting down head injuries.

NFL LEADERSHIP

GOODELL AS A TRANSITIONAL LEADER

▸ Roger Goodell displays a transitional style of leadership.

▸ It seems he uses as classical management approach where he is at the top and others follow behind him.

▸ Actions usually end with a reward or punishment when Roger steps in to the NFL issue, if he handles it correctly is usually the real question.

NFL LEADERSHIP

GOODELL’S COMMUNICATION

▸ Goodell is not considered to be the best of public speaking and communicating in a press conference setting.

▸ He comes off as “Stale” in his tone and approach according to many in the media

▸ His delivery is not great, which is a disappointment for someone at his position.

▸ He is visionary to the public but his average delivery really affects his message.

GOODELL’S LEADERSHIP

▸ Goodell’s has had a decent usage of framing since he has taken over as the commissioner of the NFL.

▸ He usually is able to use “spin” to put a positive connotation on something that may be negative

▸ He has used jargon such as “Protect the Shield” in order to describe what the goal of the NFL should be, to protect their integrity

NFL LEADERSHIP

CONTINGENCY THEORY

▸ the contingency theory states that there is not one set style or leadership that is correct.

▸ It preaches that being adaptive and receptive is the best way to lead this days.

▸ based on “leadership style” and “situational control”

NFL LEADERSHIP

ROGER GOODELL CHANGES

▸ With all that being said many in the NFL are upset with Goodell and believe he should have some of his powers restricted.

▸ This past week at the NFL owners meeting there were rumors they were going to vote to take the commissioner’s power to punish players and give it to committee of people.

▸ However, this never came in fruition and another owners meeting came and went without any changes.

CONCLUSION

▸ In conclusion I believe Roger Goodell is in a no-win situation

▸ He will be put under fire if a punishment is too soft, put also will be under fire from Players Association if it is deemed to be heavy.

▸ In the end I feel a committee to handle suspensions, that includes Mr. Goodell, would be the best plan of action going forward.

▸ Roger Goodell as whole as done very well as the NFL Commissioner I believe he deserves some more praise for his good actions for the NFL then his most recent screw ups

QUESTIONS

▸ Will the NFL Owners one day vote in favor of the suspension committee idea?

▸ There was talk of Roger Goodell stepping down. Would that happen? If so how soon could it?

▸ Will the NFL begin to accept that CTE is major problem with football?

▸ Will the result of the Deflategate hurt Roger further if the court sides with Brady v. the NFL?
