Skills-Jobs Mismatch?Challenging the model of completion

"There are more than two million open jobs in the U.S., in part because employers can't find workers with the advanced manufacturing skills they need."

General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt and American Express CEO Ken Chenault, Wall Street Journal, June 13, 2011

A New Place In History…

“Our once unchallenged preeminence in commerce, industry, science and technological innovation is being taken over by competitors throughout the world. The educational foundations of our society are presently being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatens our very future as a nation and a people”

Which Requires a New Set of Remedies…• Increase aid to low wealth school districts• Setting of standards and increasing math

and science requirements• Lengthening the school day and year• Increase in compensation for teachers• Salary, tenure, retention and promotion

should be tied to an effective evaluation system that rewards superior teachers, encourages average teachers and improves or terminates poor performing teachers

But where to startLessons from the Common Core

10

• Focus

• We cant do it all, so choose those things that our data demands our attention to- attention which yields the highest rate of return for learning opportunities

• Coherence

• Map out how an effective RtI program is based in the Common Core; how assessments under a DDI approach fit within the SLO framework; how the data from assessments and EBO informs targeted professional development; how the measurement of PD informs program and budget choices

• Rigor

• High accountability, high support

Focus on…• Teaching and Leading

• What is our investment in professional development?

• How are we measuring the effectiveness of professional development?

• How is our professional development supported by research?

• Are we fostering a play, passion, purpose environment?

• Course offerings• How are we leveraging technology?

• Are we investing in those courses which have the greatest rate of return?

• Communication• What strategies have you developed to reach the community about the changes in instruction,

assessment and learning?

• What does the community know about the Common Core?

• School finance• How accurate is our per student expenditure report?

• What investments are we making that best ensure College and Career Readiness?

• Culture• What is our district mindset? Fixed or growth?

• Do we accept and embrace “developing” teachers?
