LEADERSHIP FROM MY PERSPECTIVE “And you shall remember the LORD your

God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth”

-Deuteronomy 8:18b

“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

-Matthew 16:26

WHAT WE THINK WE BECOME“Watch your thoughts because they become words.Watch your words because they become actions.Watch your actions because they become habits.Watch your habits because they become your character.Watch your character because it becomes your destiny. What we think we become.”

“…bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” -2 Corinthians 10:5b

YOU MUST BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS “Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you’re right.”

Henry Ford

“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad; for a tree is known by its fruit…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” -Matthew 12:33-34b

20,000 words a day and most of them defamatory “We speak to ourselves all the time. Most days we direct around 20,000 words at ourselves. Of these nearly all are negative. We keep feeding our minds with negative dialogue. How long would you expect to keep a friend if you did the same thing? You are your own best friend. Start talking to yourself nicely. Say kind things to yourself about yourself. Believe. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to the person you know most intimately and love the best.” -A recipe for dreaming. Bryce Courtenay.

YOU ARE CAPABLE OF WHATEVER YOU SET YOUR MIND AND HEART TO. Do you think you are a Leader capable of

success? You are capable of whatever you set your

mind and heart to. If you are not already moving in the direction

you want to go then start – God will steer you when you move.

PUT INTO ACTION A PLAN Lake Property (personal experience) Visualise and put into action a plan, it is possible

to bring what’s in your heart and mind into reality.

If you don’t know where you’re going, then how will you get there?“Make pictures in your mind. See the destination. Imagine your arrival. Dream in perfect detail. See yourself the way you want to be when you arrive. See yourself arriving. Make yourself a road map and study it every day until you know the way and the destination by heart.” -A recipe for dreaming. Bryce Courtenay.

Page 10: Leadership from my perspective

WORK HARD If it was easy we would all be doing it and winning.

First things tomorrow.“Find a comfortable chair, close your eyes, put your hands in your lap and start learning how to dream again. Dream for five minutes. Dream about the past. Dream about what you’ve already been. Repeat this the next day and the next. After some ten days you’ll get the knack of dreaming again. You’ll begin to regain the long lost art of dreaming. Then start dreaming forward. Dream what has yet to be done. Dream a direction for yourself.” -A recipe for dreaming. Bryce Courtenay.

“Prayer is a seed and seeds take time to grow. So sew it now. What do you want? What are you dreaming about? Throw seeds of prayers into the future. You were made in the image of your Father and he lives outside of time.” -Stephen De Silva

ARE LEADERS BORN OR MADE? Learnable “Leaders do not have to be great men or

women by being intellectual geniuses or omniscient prophets to succeed. But they do need to have the ‘right stuff’ and this ‘stuff’ is not equally present in all people”. -Kirkpatrick & Locke.

GREAT BY CHOICE BY JIM COLLINS Twenty-Mile March: Keep a steady pace no

matter the environmental factors.

“Financial markets are out of your control. Customers are out of your control. Earthquakes are out of your control. Global competition is out of your control. Technological change is out of your control. Most everything is ultimately out of your control. But when you 20-Mile March, you have a tangible point of focus that keeps you and your team moving forward, despite confusion, uncertainty, and even chaos.”

–Jim Collins, Great By Choice

Page 13: Leadership from my perspective

TWENTY MILE MARCH What is your 20 Mile March?

Putting a dream into action.“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”. –Calvin Coolidge. (A recipe for dreaming.-Bryce Courtenay).

WISDOM “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of

wisdom;” -Psalm 111:10

When you’re skating on thin ice you might as well tap-dance.Stick your neck out, volunteer, have a go, reach out beyond your best performance and when you do, do so with style, elan, panache. You will learn more from a brilliantly executed failure than from a success planned within the dreary safety of what you already know. Winning easy is boring, pointless work. -A recipe for dreaming. Bryce Courtenay.

WHO SHOULD LEAD? When people practice leadership, they are

leaders and this is true regardless of position. That means that followers, just like formal leaders, can’t be permanently categorised. –David McKie, UoW Professor.

Philip’s example Graeme Lawrence’s tips:1. Treat people how you would like to be treated 2. Talk to people on their level. 3. Always be prepared to listen to people about their ideas. 4. If it’s meant to be – it’s up to me.

BEING A LEADER IS NOT JUST ABOUT RANK OR POSITION Jesus is the ultimate leader

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” -James 1:12

“The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” –Ralph Nader

BENJAMIN ZANDER: THE ART OF POSSIBILITY Giving an ‘A’ grade. Brings out full potential and allows others to take creative risks, free

from failure. Zander’s own ‘A’:“-I got my A because I finally broke the cycle of lashing out at people when they didn’t do exactly what I wanted them to do.-I came to see that when I got angry with people or became sarcastic, it was like wiping them out, and our relationship never recovered.-It was hard for me to ‘get’ that what I wanted was not necessarily what they want.-I have come finally to the realization that relationships with my colleagues, players, students, and friends are always more important than the project…-that indeed, the very success of the project depends on those relationships being full of grace.-that someone who stands up to me and is unwilling to accept abusive behaviour is more of an ally than someone who goes along with it, either out of fear or resignation.”

TIPS & ADVICE “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your

heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” -Matthew 6:14-15.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT IN EVERY FIELD “Bill Johnson says ‘What you know can keep

you from what you need to know’ He’s right, because as soon as you consider yourself an expert, you stop learning and growing. The Pharisees are a great example of people who memorized the Word of God and didn’t recognize the author of the Book when He stood right in front of them explaining the Book to them. History is full of experts whose imagination was imprisoned by their education, experience or fear of rejection”. -Kris Vallotton ‘Heavy Rain’

Personal experience: Financial Miracles “It’s not by might, nor by power but by my

spirit says the Lord” -Zechariah 4:6b “And as long as the king sought guidance

from the LORD, God gave him success”-2 Chronicles 26:5b

Ask God for guidance in everything you do

TAKE TIME OUT It’s important when you’re in business, or

when you have a career and your life starts getting busy, to take time out for your family.

Daniel Carter once said: “I was never the best – but I never gave up”.
