Congratulations class of 2015! You made it through this unique community driven leadership program. My hope is that you’ve become more aware of our great community and some of its accolades, as well as some of its challenges. As a result, may you find things that move you to get more involved and start leading in the community and your places of business in ways that you haven’t before. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you and observing friendships and collaborations develop between you over the course of the year. I can guarantee that some of you will be connected for a very long time as a result. What you have been able to accomplish within your small group projects is nothing short of amazing! Thank you for donating your time, talent and treasure in planning and executing such wonderful and valuable community driven projects. These projects not only

help 6 different non-profits in the area, but countless people will be impacted for many years to come!

As an alumni, I know first hand how important the alumni are to the future success of this program. My interest in the program came from conversations I had with community members who were past graduates. As the director, I’m always happy to share information about the program, but my passion for the program comes from being a past participant. This program is sold and resold by you. The stories you share prove to be the best and most effective tool we have when it comes to recruiting. Many graduates serve on our LFC Steering Committee. They are people who develop and design programming for the future LFC sessions. I am sincerely grateful to every committee member for their continued dedication, commitment and support. I am so blessed and happy to know and work with these outstanding people. Congratulations again LFC class of 2015! I look forward to meeting up with you in the future.

Highest Regards,

Joy Kapheim

ProjectsBoys & Girls Club - Healthy Living Garden & Green Space

Members: Josh Dukelow, Mary Gronbach, Janice Jackering, Travis Jones, Erin Marquez and Brenda Smongeski

Objective: To create a flexible outdoor space and classroom curriculum for Boys & Girls Club members to learn about health, nutrition, and wellness. The healthy living space includes a learning garden with raised garden beds and a compost bin; an outdoor classroom with picnic tables and shade trees and a large play area for members to be inspired by the fitness messages found on the banners that surround the garden.

Outcome/Impact: The creation of an outdoor classroom and exercise space will serve as a solid foundation of wellness for Club members. Curriculum centered on growing healthy food, preparing nutritious meals, and the health benefits of physical activity will be used by the Healthy Habits Clubs that already exist at the Boys & Girls Club.

Leadership’s Little Libraries

Members: Jennifer Banta-Kroll, Jennifer Blackmore, Drew Bodway, Jake Dietz, Lindsay Fenlon, Meagan Hardwick, Lisa Werner

Objective: To support literacy in areas where children in need can have easier access to books for ownership. Our other goal is to support parents, especially single parents or low-income parents, with small children who may have difficulty (due to time, childcare, or transportation) in accessing library and literacy development services. To achieve both of these goals, we planned to build, decorate and “plant” 10 little libraries throught the Fox Cities area.

Outcome/Impact: In collaboration with Little Chute High School and Menasha High School, we have 10 little libraries that have been built and decorated by students. These libraries will be “planted” in various locations throughout the Fox Cities, including local non-profits (LEAVEN and the Housing Partnership), organizations and private residences in low-income neighborhoods. Funding for this project was generously donated by local leaders. Books to supply the little libraries were donated by the Menasha Elementary School Libraries.

Make-A-Wish Kid Creations

Team: Stephen Jensen, Amy Neumeyer, Tracey Ratzburg, Nancy Rietveld, Kimberly Stevens, Kevin Weil, Danielle Zarling

Objective: To increase funding and awareness for the northeast Office of Make-A-Wish Wisconsin, while also providing a forum for families of children with life-threatening medical conditions to gather and create relationships and beautiful works of art.

Outcome/Impact: The creation of numerous personalized pieces of artwork that Make-A-Wish Wisconsin could use for fundraising and awareness-building at already-established fundraising events. We helped form new relationships with the three local businesses, which will benefit both the Northeast Wisconsin office of Make-A-Wish, and the local businesses in the form of publicity and recognition for their participation. We provided an opportunity for the wish children to remain engaged with, and give back to, the Make-A-Wish® Foundation, along with a networking opportunity for their parents and family members.

Fox Valley Sibling Support Network (FVSSN)

Team: Chris Hauser, Julie Luker, Michele Martin, Jennie Moore, Chris Snyder, Manny Vasquez

Objective: The primary goal was to plan and execute an event with the FVSSN on April 10, 2015. Secondarily, the goal was to raise the awareness of the FVSSN within the community.

Outcome/Impact: Our project raised the awareness of the Fox Valley Sibling Support Program and we coordinated an event on April 10, 2015 which fell on national Sibling’s Day. FVSSN is the predecessor of the WisconSibs organization who helps hundreds of children, teens and adults who live each day with siblings with autism, intellectual/developmental disabilities, physical disabilities and mental illness and connect with resources and each other to help them throughout their lifelong journey. Our role was to become the planning committee for the April 10th anchor event. The goal is to plan and organize the event, select the proper venue, promote the event, and engage community leaders to participate and advertise the event.

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin-Fox Valley Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Environment and Experience Upgrade

Team: Preston Kendall, Zach Knase, Sondra Norder, Heidi Schmidt, Suzanne Seegers, Chris VanDreese

Objective: The overarching objective of our project is to help create an environment and experience in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that instills hope in the families of its patients. From the aesthetics and technology within the unit to the support that families receive, we identified several opportunities to make an impact on the comfort and connectedness that families feel during these challenging and emotional situations. By bringing families together to share their journeys in a support group setting, adding uplifting images and patient success stories to the environment, and providing new technology to the waiting and family resource areas, we will be helping the NICU become a place of inspiration, encouragement, and reassurance.

Outcome/Impact: We helped revamp a family support group that will begin meeting monthly for dinner and sharing once again. We created a significant piece of wall art that includes patient success stories and images of the miracles that are born and grow in NICUs and beyond. With funds raised, we provided the NICU with new technology; a new flat screen television and blu-ray player, replaced the tube television and VCR in the lobby, and web-cams for connection with offsite/long-distance family members were wadded to the family resource area.

Valley Packaging Industries Communications Initative

Team: Eric Aronson, Robert Bobnock, Betsy Borns, Mary Downs, Amy Kester, Anna Wilcox

Objective: Increase awareness about the programs and impact of Valley Packaging Industries (VPI) rehabilitation services through a collaborative communications initiative. The project has two components: 1) to create and disseminate a marketing brochure focused on VPI’s prevocational rehabilitation program and 2) to produce a short video highlighting the impact of VPI’s rehabilitation program.

Outcome/Impact: Leadership Fox Cities (LFC) team members collaborated with both VPI staff and students at the Appleton Career Academy within Appleton North High School for graphic design and video work. Based on design ideas produced by Appleton Career Academy students, the brochure promotes VPI rehabilitation programs and will be distributed to key constituency groups. LFC team members finalized the brochure in digital format and secured paper and printing facility donations to produce a long-term supply of hardcopy brochures. The short promotional video is intended for a variety of audiences and has potential to be used during presentations, on the VPI website, on VPI social media sites, for fundraising efforts, and for similar marketing purposes.

The new class of leaders identifies the topics or issues in which they are experienced or interested in. This supports the belief that individuals with passion and commitment to a cause or need will provide dedicated service, in order to assist local non-profits and other community-serving organizations. This listing is a community resource.
