1ST SUNDAY OF LENT: FEBRUARY 14, 2016

1. Arrive early (to prepare your heart for the Eucharist). 2. Turn off your cell phone (talk and listen only to God). 3. Pray and sing along.

4. Pay attention to the Word of God and the homily. 5. Receive communion with devotion. 6. Go out with a sense of mission.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today Lent begins. Ash Wednesday initiates the forty days of the Lenten fast, but since Sundays are not tallied in the days of fasting, today is the solemn opening of the forty days of Lent. The Church has work to do today, principally the call-ing forward of those chosen (the proper word is elected) for the Easter sacraments. Some of those who have been catechu-mens may now make a transition to a new way of life as the “elect.” For them, this Lent will be a time of “purification” and “enlightenment.” For us who accompany them, it is a time of helping them discern God’s call and prepare for new life.

This year, while the readings from the third year of the Lectionary cycle are usually read, they are set aside on certain Sundays for the benefit of the elect. We turn then to the readings from Year A, and we give those who journey to the font of baptism three extraordinary companions. In the Gospels for those days, we meet the woman of Samaria and the man born blind, and we come to the tomb of Lazarus three days after his death. Many bishops celebrate the Rite of Election on or near today, affirming God’s choice for these new faithful, and also offering them the solidarity of many companions. In 2013, over 38,000 adults entered the baptismal waters in the United States, a remarkable testimony to the vigor of our tradition of receiving and nurturing adult faith.

How Can a Catholic Benefit in a Mass?

• SBYAG MOVIE NIGHT: Join us for this month’s movie night! Friday, February 19, 2016 at 7:30pm in Carroll Hall *Please note that Movie Night is open to individuals of all ages.*Movie: War Room. Light snacks will be provided.

• CALLING ALL YOUNG ADULTS: We are looking for young adults to help vol-unteer as altar servers, lectors, and Eucharistic ministers for our Sunday Masses at STM. If you are interested in helping minister our masses, please contact the church office at 415-452-9634 or email: [email protected] & we will be happy to assist you!

• MASS INTENTION SCHEDULE: Are you interested in offering a Mass for a special intention, beloved departed, healing, or thanksgiving? If so, please contact the Church office to schedule a date and time! Suggested stipend $10 a mass.

• 40 DAYS FOR LIFE: From February 10 through March 20, you are invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray during the 40-day vigil outside Planned Parenthood at 1650 Valencia St (btw Cesar Chavez and Mission St.). If you’d like more information – and especially if you’d like to volunteer to help, please contact Hunt at (408) 840-3297 or [email protected]. Visit our website to sign up for an hour per week of prayer on Valencia Street:40daysforlife.com/sanfrancisco.

• ABSTINENCE & FASTING: As in the past, the following

regulations are in place for abstaining and fasting during Lent: ABSTINENCE: Everyone14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fri-days of Lent and Good Friday. FAST: Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drink-ing liquids during the day is permitted. When health or abil-ity to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest as-signed to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consult-ed. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

• PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS: God, our Father, In Your love and providence, You call each of us to a more holy and abundant life. We pray for our young people in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Open their hearts and minds to know the vocation You have planned for them for all eternity. If they are being invited to follow You as a priest, Brother, or Sister, give them a generous heart to respond to Your challenging call and the strength to follow wherever You lead them. May families desire to please You by encouraging and supporting vocations within their homes. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Good Shep-herd. Amen. If you believe God is calling you to the priest-hood or religious life or would like to learn more about vocations and our seminarians, please contact Fr. Schunk: at Email: [email protected] Phone #: 415-614-5684 or facebook.com/sfvocations

LITURGY GUIDE SPONSORS Dear Parishioners & Friends of STM Church,

You have probably noticed in our recent Masses, we have been using a “Liturgy Guide” instead of our regular Mis-salette Books, in the upcoming year we will be working on creating our own guide.

We are asking for your assistance in covering the cost (licensing, improvements, etc...) . We will be including a donor sheet inside of the Liturgy Guide.

Each time the Liturgy Guide is opened for prayer/song our benefactors and loved ones will be in our thoughts and will share in our participation at Mass. This Practice is not unusual in many churches of the Archdiocese. From time to time, Masses will be offered for these donors and benefactors. Many people like to honor deceased love ones with these donations. One may also honor a family or an individual.

With a $100 donation, we will place one name or family on the insert. Fill out the information slip below and mail or place in the collection basket with your check as soon as possible. Please indicate if the person you are honoring is deceased or living. Please make your check payable to St. Thomas More Church. Thank you for your generosity to our parish .

Sincerely, Fr. Marvin-Paul R. Felipe Pastor __________________________________________
