A Compassionate Leader Many people do not know that Bono is a compassionate human rights activist. He was born on May 10, 1960 in Dublin, Ireland and is 54 years old. His real name is Paul David Hewson. In addition, Bono is the lead singer of the rock band U2. Bono was named one of the most politically effective celebrities of all time by The National Journal in 2011, and performs for many charity organizations. Since 1999, he has been heavily involved in the third world debt relief, raising awareness for Africa and AIDS, and supporting equality for everyone. Furthermore, he has helped raised money for Hurricane Katrina Relief. One of the strongest character traits of Bono is compassion. A compassionate person is someone who understands that other people are hurting, and wants to help those people. As a compassionate man who really cares about human rights, he cofounded a campaign called ONE. This campaign is a fight to end poverty and disease in Africa. With over 6 million people involved in ONE, they work with political leaders to fight AIDS and preventable diseases. There is a lot of corruption in African politics, so ONE helps monitor the aid and make sure those who need it the most receive it. Since the year 2000, malaria has been cut by 75% in Africa. Additionally, ONE has raised over $95 million in debt relief for poor countries over the past decade. One of U2s most famous songs is called One. The group performed this song at a benefit concert in 2005 and raised over $80 million for several charities, one of which is ONE. Many celebrities would not give so much of their time or do a free concert. This is an act of compassion by Bono because compassionate people do not think twice about how things will benefit them because they are always thinking of others first. Another example of Bonos compassion is the (RED) campaign. Bono, along with well-known companies like Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Beats by Dr. Dre, Apple, GAP and many more, raise money to fight AIDS. Furthermore, these companies donate up to 50% of their sales to (RED). One of Bonos slogans is, This isnt about charity, its about justice. The group U2 wrote a song called Invisible for (RED). Every time Invisible was downloaded on ITunes for one specific day, Bank of America donated $1 to (RED), and raised $3 million. Additionally, the money raised by (RED) supports hospitals in high HIV areas. Bono did not even think about giving up money for a song he wrote. Once again, his compassion led to over 55 million people to date getting help. Equally important, Bono is a supporter of Nelson Mandela. Like Mandela, Bono believes in equality for all. In 2014, the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom was shown in theaters everywhere. Bono and his group U2 wrote a song called Ordinary Love just for the movie. The song was written to honor Nelson Mandela and was released on November 29, 2013, a week before Mandela died. This song supported Nelson Mandelas belief of equality for all. Compassionate people, like Bono, find ways to support causes that believe all people should be treated fairly. In summary, Bono is the lead singer of the rock band U2 that sometimes perform free concerts, and is an amazing human rights activist. Bono is a compassionate person who understands that other people are hurting, and wants to help those people. While Bono has participated in many charity events, he is not done giving to others. Without Bonos dedication, foundations like ONE and (RED) would not have received the extra money needed to help them. The compassion he shows brings relief to those who need help. Therefore, I inspire you to go learn more about this incredible leader.
