    A 390: Leadership Dynamics

his course will expose you to 2,500

    ears of dynamic thinking about

    eaders and leadership, from the

    lassical world to the post-modern.

ou will come to understand ten big

    deas about leadership; ever-changing

ources and deployments of authority;erations of the leaders and

ollowers place in society; and the

    atest thinking on leader-follower

    ynchronicity, pervasive leadership,

    nd leaderlessness.

n the first half of the semester, special

ttention will be drawn to the

    hallenges of modernity and ideas

    about leadership and followership

that culminated in World War II

    totalitarianism -- a watershed

development that left us searching for

    new answers to age-old question

    about human nature, interaction,

    leadership.

In the second half, we will refocu

    these questions and examine pos

    modern hypotheses rising out of

    social, natural, and formal scienc

    Throughout, we will interact with

    leadership canon and encounter

    numerous examples of leadership

men and women, living and dead

We will see how dynamic ideas a

put into practice in the real world

    famously, infamously, and

    anonymously.

    PA 390: Leadership Dyn

Required readingThis course is built around five core texts, supplemented by downloadable book

    hapters and journal articles.

    Machiavellli

    he Prince

    he most famous book on

    olitics ever written, The

    rince remains as lively and

    hocking today as when it

    was written almost five

    undred years ago. Initially

    enounced as a collection of

    inister maxims and a

    ecommendation of tyranny, it

    as more recently been

    efended as the first scientific

reatment of politics as it is

    racticed rather than as it

    ught to be practiced. Harvey

    C. Mansfields translation of

    his classic work is the

    efinitive version for scholars,

    tudents, and those interested

n the dark art of politics.

    Freud

    Civilization and Its

    Discontents

    Written in the decade before

    Freuds death, Civilization and

    Its Discontents may be his

    most famous and brilliant

    work. It has been praised,

    dissected, lambasted,

    interpreted, and reinterpreted.

    Fundamental questions: What

influences led to the creationof civilization? Why and how

did it come to be? What

    determines civilizations

    trajectory? Freuds theories on

the effect of the knowledge of

    death on human existence and

the birth of art are central to

    his work.

    Arendt

    The Origins of

    Totalitarianism

    In her monumental study, Dr.

    Arendt focuses on the two

    genuine forms of the

    totalitarian state in history --

    the dictatorships of

    Bolshevism after 1930 and of

    National Socialism after 1938.

    Identifying terror as the very

    essence of this form of

    government, she discusses the

    transformation of classes into

    masses and the use of

    propaganda in dealing with

    the nontotalitarian world, and

    in a brilliant concluding

    chapter analyzes the nature of

    isolation and loneliness as

    preconditions for total

    domination.

    Kellerman

    Leadership

    Leadership, says Harvard

    Professor Barbara Kellerman,

    is all about what leaders

should learn -- but it is

    decidedly not, deliberately

    not, about what leadership

    education has lately come to

    look like.

    Instead, Leadership is a concise

collection of great leadershipliterature that has stood the

    test of time. Every single

    selection has had an impact

on how and what we think

about what it means to lead.

And every one has had an

    impact on leadership as an

    area of intellectual inquiry --

as well as on the course of

    human history.

    Gardner

    Leading Minds: An Ana

    of Leadership

    Applying a cognitive len

    leadership, Gardner iden

one of its crucial but hith

    neglected components: th

mind of the leader and th

minds of his or her follow

    Effective leaders create n

    stories that wrestle

    successfully with stories

    already populate the min

    their followers. Gardner

    imposes his highly origin

    framework on a wide

    spectrum of leaders that

    from political, business, a

    military leaders to those

    individuals who provide

    leadership in the arts,

    sciences, and professions
