EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS IN DURHAM Families Moving Forward is an emergency shelter for homeless families in Durham. It provides a safe place to live while each family looks for a job and permanent housing. FMF helps each family every step of the way on their journey to self-sufficiency. Our church partners with Temple Baptist and the congregation of Duke Chapel to prepare and serve dinner on a rotating basis 4 times each year. Our next opportunity to serve will be on Monday April 16th & Thursday April 19th. On Monday night we will be providing the entrée (Bar B Q chicken) and the other churches will be providing the sides and dessert for 50 people. On Thursday night we will provide the entire meal for about 15 people. We are seeking AUMC members to cook and serve food and assist with child care for newborn to 5 year old children for 1 hour each night (6:30 till 7:30). You can also assist the families by donating items for a Barrel of Joy with items such as paper products, toilet tissue, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and laundry supplies. Please bring your donations by April 15th and put them in the closet across from the Wesley Room.

RETURNS APRIL 11th FELLOWSHIP MENUS FOR APRIL

BEGINNING WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11TH * 6:30 PM

JOSEPH: THE JOURNEY TO FORGIVENESS Led by Lara Rowland * This is a study open to all women and it will explore what God has to say to us about grace and forgiveness through Joseph's story of trial and triumph found in Genesis 37-50. As we study his dreams, his betrayers, his dysfunctional family, his struggle to forgive, and his journey toward reconciliation, we'll find truths that echo into our own personal situations as well as practical help for answer-ing common questions, such as: How do I stop dwelling on the hurt? Is forgiving someone excusing what happened? When will I stop having to re-forgive? Is there a difference between forgiveness and reconciliation? How can I forgive and still set boundaries? Is it ever okay not to forgive? This will be an exciting time of fellowship and sharing for all women of the church. This is a continuation of the study started in January, but if you are new please join us! For more info, contact Lara Rowland, [email protected]. “TO TILL AND TO KEEP”--Genesis Garden Workgroup * Led by Shelia Rittgers, Christina Cone, and Anabela Mendes. In the very beginning of creation, God placed Adam and Eve in a garden. Genesis 2:15 offers instructions for humanity to take care of the garden. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.” By taking care of the land and raising food in our patch of land, we serve as witnesses to God’s new creation happening in Christ. We have a wonderful garden ministry at Aldersgate where we can care for God’s creation and serve others as part of our Christian witness. With longer daylight and warmer weather, we are gathering a group to serve in the garden on Wed. nights. Maybe a traditional classroom setting is not your thing or you need a way to wind down after a long day of work. Either way, getting our hands in the soil and working together can be refreshing and rejuvenating. We hope you will join us. THE PSALMS FOR PRAYER AND WORSHIP * Led by Eric Prenshaw * Within our Scr iptures we have a wonderful resource for prayer, worship, devotion, and cultivating an authentic relationship with God -the book of Psalms. The Psalms expresses every desire and emotion of the human heart—from praise, thanks-giving, anger, regret, fear, lamentation, trust, and hope. No matter what you are feeling, it is encouraging to hear how others have cried out to God and found a source of encouragement and hope in the midst of trials. In this class we explore the various types of Psalms, how we can use them for personal prayer, and how our life as individuals and as a community can be enriched by meditating upon them. We will use various art forms to explore the Psalms more deeply including creative writing, visual art, and music. These poems were meant to be sung. You might even say that the book of Psalms was the hymnbook Jesus knew. So we will learn some new songs using the music of Wendell Kimbrough, Charles Pettee and Folkpsalm, and others. You don’t have to sing, but we hope you will join in making a joyful noise together.

“NOT YOUR ORDINARY JOE” The classic Old Testament story of Joseph is retold in the exuberant times and music of the 1950’s. Joe’s story, told with surfer beats, leather jackets, and surfboards, teaches us the Gospel truth: that our God is always with us. Joseph is a great lesson about forgiveness and reconcili-ation, and trusting in God. This creative play, and upbeat music offer lots of opportunities for everyone to be a star, and even have speaking roles or solos! Auditions for larger character roles will be held the week of June 11, for a head start. Other times (earlier) may be arranged. Registration forms for ½ day camp are on the Welcome Tables now, or register through Aldersgate Camps for full-day camp. Please try to register by June 15. As soon as you register, you will receive a copy of the listening CD!

Help Wanted: we are blessed to have our awesome Camp Staff to help with this week, but would love to incorporate more of Aldersgate’s members in volunteering with the children through this week, and with prep tasks such as making poodle skirt or providing props. Please contact Nan for more information! [email protected]

DRAMA MINISTRY IS SCOUTING FOR TALENT!

Some say that worship is a rehearsal for life, and that we are the actors and God is the audience. Our faith is built on the story of God and God’s people, which means there are definitely ways that we can learn and worship through drama. If you’d like to get involved in our plans to provide some drama for worship, please contact: Emily Wike ([email protected]) or Nan.

The next morning, Lloyd Larson will be Aldersgate’s special guest for our 5th Sunday celebration. Come and help our music ministry celebrate “Praising God in all the days that end in Y.”

‘WHY DO WE GO TO CHURCH?’

Some go to church to take a walk; Some go there to laugh and talk; Some go there to meet a friend; Some go there their time to spend; Some go there to meet a lover; Some go there a fault to cover; Some go there for speculation; Some go there for observation; Some go there to doze and nod; The wise go there to worship God.

Lloyd Larson

Lloyd Larson earned a B.A. from Anderson University of Anderson, Indiana in 1976 and a M.C.M. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary of Louisville, Kentucky in 1979. He has done additional graduate work at Southern Baptist Seminary, The Ohio State University, and Northern Baptist Seminary, Chicago, Illinois.

Since 1982, Lloyd has been an active composer and arranger for several major publishing companies of church and school music. His compositions and arrangements include well over 1,500 published works—including choral anthems, numerous extended Christmas, Easter and non‑seasonal works, key-board collections, vocal solo and duet collections, instrumental works for solo and ensembles, orchestrations, and handbell settings. The resulting notoriety has placed him in constant demand as a clinician throughout North America. It is Lloyd's work in his local church that continues to be the catalyst for much of his writing. He currently directs the adult choir in his home church in addition to being involved in worship planning and leadership.

Hello Aldersgate UMC Friends,

Central Regional Hospital issued the call in late October for your help with The Reindeer Toy Store. Your response was amazing! Anne Finch delivered your donations and she beamed with pride each time she arrived with her car loaded down with toys, and she delivered multiple times.

It is my privilege to share the joy the Reindeer Store brings to patients during a difficult time in their life. The excitement builds for weeks prior to the big event. Then the big day arrives and WOW—it is finally here!

Reindeer Moments: One person was able to give his mom a gift for the first time in many years, one patient let us know the best part of 2017 was going to the Reindeer Store, and a young lady with a smile that lit up the room approached Santa on Reindeer day, she thanked him profusely for the opportunity to give to her family. As I listened to her thank Santa, I knew her thank you must be replayed to each donor who contributed to this special day. Her thank you was from each patient to each of you for your time, your sharing and your generosity.

Thank you for bringing hope and healing through your donations!

With Appreciation,

Deborah Ferrell, CAVNC

Covenant Bible Study Next 8-week session begins April 8

Sunday evenings, 5:30-7:00 pm

Covenant is an in-depth group Bible study in which participants read and discuss the Bible together, learning how to love God--and each other—better. Three 8-week segments each explore a different aspect of Covenant life. We finish up our first segment on March 18. After a two week break we will begin the 2nd segment on April 8. We will examine what Covenant means, and the progression of a Covenant relationship with God. Even if you did not participate in the first segment, we invite you to join us for the 2nd segment!

If you are new to the class, please RSVP to Eric Prenshaw, [email protected]

During the months of April and May we have special events and snacks to honor both our Preschool and Afterschool Teachers. We are so appreciative of all the time, care and devotion they provide each day to the more than 200 students who enter Aldersgate Weekday Ministries each week.

If you would like to participate in honoring our teachers please feel free to place a thank you note in my mailbox (outside the church office) or you may contact me in the school office if you have other ideas. (919) 479-8686.

Thank you for entrusting this wonderful ministry to us each year.

KNOWING (KNOW MORE ABOUT GOD, EACH OTHER, AND THE NEEDS OF THE WORLD)

CONGRATULATION TO OUR CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2018

2018 CONFIRMATION CLASS CREED

I believe in God the Father who created heaven and earth and everything in it. God set everything into motion and called it very good! God created all people in heart, soul, mind, and strength. God loves us enough to create the world and to give us light to see, food to eat, and water to drink.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s son, our Savior and Lord. He came when we needed him. Temptations lead us away from God. But Jesus died for our sins and brings us close to God. He was crucified and rose from the dead. Jesus taught us how to live a holy life and promised the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us and guide us. Jesus Christ will come again in final victory.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, always with us, never abandoning us. The Holy Spirit prays for us and shows us the way. The Holy Spirit gives us freedom and power to grow as Christians and to do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God.

I believe in the church, where we are united for worship and service. The church is here to support us and to guide us on to the right path on our journey of faith.

All have sinned but all can be forgiven and experience eternal life. I believe we should seek abundant life and try for freedom and peace. I believe in the resurrection of the dead and the life everlasting.

3RD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION: APRIL 15 On April 15 in the 11:00 worship service we will present Bibles to our 3rd grade class. This is another event in our Milestone Ministry here at Aldersgate and an important step as our children learn to read and understand the Bible on their own. Bibles will be presented to: Regan Elizabeth Andrews, Lucy Bella Lane, and Jonathan David Thomas

CHILDREN’S SABBATH SUNDAY: APRIL 15 On April 15 our children will take a primary role in leading our 11:00 worship service. Through prayers, music, dancing, readings, greeting, ushering, acolyting, and other roles, our children will offer their gifts of worship. Pastor Eric will be sharing the message at the 8:30 and 11:00 worship services. Jesus invites us in Matthew 18:3-4, “Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Let’s come to celebrate our children and to worship God with a child-like faith. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: SAVE THE DATE JUNE 24-28, 5:30 DINNER, 6-8 PROGRAM ROLLING RIVER RAMPAGE This summer we will embark on an action-packed VBS adventure! ROLLING RIVER RAMPAGE invites children on a white-water rafting adventure to experience the ride of a lifetime with God! Along the river, children discover that life with God is an adventure full of wonder and surprise, and that they can trust God to be with them through anything. Relevant music, exciting science, creative crafts, fun recreation, and memorable Bible stories will help kids know that God is always with them as they ride the rapids of amazing grace! We need lots of helpers to make VBS a success. Please pray about how you might be involved this year. To find out more, please contact Eric Prenshaw, [email protected] or Holly Fishback, [email protected]

LOVING (Love God through worship, and love our neighbor through service.)

GENESIS GARDEN MINISTRY SPRING PLANTING BEGINS Here at Aldersgate UMC we have a wonderful garden ministry where we have the opportunity to care for God’s creation and serve others by tending a garden. This is part of our Christian witness. In the very beginning of creation, God placed Adam and Eve in a garden. Genesis 2:15 offers instructions for humanity to take care of the garden. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.” Old Testament profes-sor Ellen Davis translates the last part of this verse, “to serve and preserve.” By taking care of the land and raising food in our

patch of land, we serve as witnesses to God’s new creation happening in Christ. The purpose for the garden is threefold. First we donate food to those in need. Second, we learn more about God’s creation and teach kids and others about this as well. Third, we build a sense of community as we work toward a common purpose, inviting friends and neighbors who may not even be part of a church. You’re invited to join the Genesis Garden as spring planting begins. You may come and work on your own schedule with tasks designated to do each week. Or you may come on regular or specific workdays that we will advertise. To find out more, contact Shelia Rittgers, [email protected].

LOOKING FOR A VOLUNTEER TO TEND TO OUR LOVED ONES The Trustees are looking for a volunteer for the columbarium garden. This mission would consist of: semiannually amending and mulching plant beds, distributing a weed preventer and planting annuals. Ongoing weeding would also be required. If you are interested please contact Trustee Gary James,([email protected]), for detailed instructions.

Karen Bowen will give us information about Road Scholar Scholarships for caregivers.

CONDUIT UPDATE

When the YMCA decided not to include Oxford Manor in their afterschool tutoring programs, we didn’t know what we were going to do. Now the organization of six churches has decided to plan some kind of activity at the Oxford Manor Community Center once a month. In February, a fun Valentine Party was held. The emphasis for the program was love, specifically about the kind of words spoken to one another. A light meal of sandwiches, fruit, and cupcakes was served. A small valentine box of chocolates was given to each person. It was well attended by 5 or 6 mothers and lots of children from preschoolers to a few teenagers. In March, we had a St. Patrick’s Day party with 29 elementary children attending. The emphasis was on the meaning of forgiveness. We are planning an Easter celebration on April 19th. Booklets with the Easter story will be sent home with each child.

Plans are being made to celebrate CONDUIT’s 30th Anniversary on Saturday, May 19th at 11:00 am at Mt. Sylvan UMC.
