After School Programs

The Lexington County Recreation & Aging Commissionbegan operations in 1970, and in that same yearestablished an After School Program that is stilloffered today.

This program continues to service the county from ourBatesburg-Leesville, Gilbert, and Lexington locations.Priding itself on being a quality alternative totraditional after school care, our program employs ahighly trained and energetic staff who leadparticipants through a day of active games, crafts,healthy snacks, and organized homework time.

Our program continues to serve on early release daysand most holidays, keeping children engaged withspecial activities and field trips around the state.

Aging DepartmentThe overall goal of the seven Senior Centers of theLexington County Recreation and Aging Commission issummarized in the motto, Privileged Ones GrowingOlder. Recognizing that it is a privilege to grow older, westrive to enhance the lives of the older adults in ourpopulation and to acknowledge and benefit from thenumerous gifts those persons have to offer through theirparticipation in our programs.

Our Senior Centers offer a variety of programs andactivities aimed at enhancing an older adult’s mental andphysical wellness. Anyone who wishes to participate inour programs must be free of conditions requiringpersonal care assistance or personal supervision. Olderadults are welcome to participate in the daily activities atthe Centers. Call your local Center for age requirements,memberships, activity fees and program availability.

Moving for Meals CampaignLexington County Recreation and Aging Commission (LCRAC)kicked off its 22nd Annual Moving for Meals Campaign in July. Thefunds raised from the campaign assist LCRAC in supporting thenutritional needs of a growing, older population of individuals inour community. Since fall 2014,we have experienced a markedincrease in the number of Mealson Wheels referrals that arereceived in our office as seniorindividuals who are encounteringeconomic challenges seekassistance and resources tosupport themselves. By the timethe calls are received in ouroffice, many are already in direand immediate need with nearempty cabinets and refrigerators.

We are grateful that through the support of businesses, churches,individuals and civic groups this past fundraising year, $75,646.94were raised for Meals on Wheels representing the cost of food for25,212 meals. Although we have impacted many, the needcontinues.

If you have never been a participant of the Moving for MealsCampaign or you haven’t participated lately, take a moment toconsider making a donation. Your donation will assure that seniorindividuals are having their nutritional needs met with a weekly 5-day meal delivery to their home or by receiving a meal at one ofour seven senior facilities. Sponsorship opportunities are alsoavailable for those interested through October 16th.

A personalized program for seniors 55+ to enhance muscularstrength, aerobic endurance, flexibility and body composition.Seniors are required to purchase a Wellness Center Membership tothe Leisure Center and a $25 assessment charge for Senior StrengthTraining. The program involves an initial assessment with a trainerto get a baseline for a personal exercise program. After the initialassessment, the participant will meet with the trainer one-on-one foran equipment orientation and training session. Periodic follow-upassessments will be done to track the participant’s progress andupdate his/her exercise program. In addition, the participant canmeet with the trainer for wellness consultations. As a part of theprogram, monthly workshops and health screenings are offered topromote total health and wellness.
