School of Economics et s'intitule « The econometrics of auctions with asymmetric anonymous
bidders ».

The econometrics of auctions1 with asymmetric
anonymous bidders2
Laurent Lamy
Paris School of Economics
This paper is motivated by the fact that the ‘identities’ corresponding to some bids are
unknown to the econometrician in some auction data.
This may first come because their formal identities (or names) are confidential. Sellers are
sometimes reluctant to disclose information that would allow to map each bid (especially
losing bids) to a given identity, as this would be interpreted as encouraging collusion. For
example, only the winner’s identity is publicly disclosed in the French timber auctions
organized by the ONF (French National Forest Service) and analyzed in Li and Perrigne
(2003). Alternatively, sellers may be willing to disclose publicly the amounts of some of the
losing bids in order to provide potential entrants with more accurate signals of their expected
profits from auction participation. In French timber auctions, the amounts of the two highest
losing bids are disclosed if more than five bids are submitted. With fewer participants, only
the highest losing bid or possibly no losing bids are disclosed, since disclosure would break
the anonymity paradigm–which requires that the identity of the bidder corresponding to any
given bid amount cannot be traced back–as bidders’ identities can be observed. Sometimes,
the buyers themselves are reluctant to disclose their identities and recruit representatives or
submit telephone bids, as is common in the auctions organized by houses such as Christie’s
and Sotheby’s. Ginsburgh (1998) reports having seen a considerable number of art sales in
which all the bids were entered by Christie’s employees acting for telephone bidders.
Furthermore, Cassady (1967) reports that buyers who are well-known frequently choose to
remain anonymous in the auction process. Hernando-Veciana and Tröge (2011) provide a
theoretical foundation for this strategy: an insider, who has better information about a
common component of the value of the good for sale than do the other bidders, may benefit
from protecting the value of her private information by remaining anonymous.
Second, asymmetry in the auction model may come from some ‘group affiliation3’ among
bidders, which makes them bid according to different distributions, but which is not observed
even though their formal identities are known. We emphasize that, throughout the paper, what
we call bidder’s identity is the ‘relevant’ identity, i.e. the element which drives the bid
distribution, and which does not necessarily correspond to formal identity. Along these lines,
the term ‘anonymous’ refers to a lack of knowledge about bidders’ identities, be it either
formal identity or group affiliation. For example, on eBay, we can distinguish between two
kinds of bidders: ‘real bidders’ who bid to consume the good and ‘shill bidders4’ who are
used by some sellers to inflate prices by means of false names. The agent managing a given
bidding account on eBay may sometimes bid as a real bidder and sometimes as a shill bidder.
 PAGE 8
This latter bidding activity is structurally anonymous by nature since it is often prohibited. The
empirical analysis of eBay auction data in Song (2004) and Sailer (2006) considers symmetric
bidders and thus excludes any shill bidding activity, which is however a pervasive
phenomenon that is not only confined to internet auctions, and which is theoretically analyzed
in Lamy, 2010 and [Lamy, 2009] respectively for models with pure private values and
participation costs and models with interdependent values. Group affiliations can also be
tailored to the case where the econometrician does not observe some key discrete covariate5
driving the asymmetry between bidders, e.g. firm location, incumbency status6 with respect
to the contract for sale, or seniority status in the market. Finally, we emphasize that in most of
the data sets that have been analyzed in the literature, bidders’ identities are known. In some
cases, a significant part of the econometrician’s work has been to recover those identities, such
as the location of the firms in Flambard and Perrigne (2006) or the names of the firms that
won neighboring tracts in Hendricks and Porter (1988) in auctions for drainage leases7. This
comes about when the econometrician is working for the seller or a regulatory agency. On the
contrary, if we consider a broader application of the econometrics of auction data where the
econometrician may work for bidders or potential entrants who only have access to limited
public information, then the scenario where bidders’ identities are not observed is probably the
more common one. In this latter perspective, important examples where both anonymity and
asymmetry among a small set of participants prevail are auctions repeated on a daily basis in
electricity markets where very different kinds of bidders participate (producers, distributors,
traders). E.g. Wolfram (1998) analyzes bidding behavior asymmetries in the former British
Electricity Pool.
We thus consider a setup in which bidders’ identities are not–or are only partially–observed by
the econometrician. At first glance, anonymity reduces considerably the scope of the economic
analysis and invites the econometrician to assume that bidders are ex ante symmetric8.
However, asymmetries have been key in much of the empirical work on auction data.
Furthermore, identifying asymmetric behavior among anonymous bidders fits in well with
models of shill bidding or with a better informed bidder, not only because these models
explicitly involve asymmetries but also as it is precisely the asymmetries between bidders
which drive the need for anonymity. Collusion is another example. In [Porter and Zona,
1993] and [Porter and Zona, 1999] and Pesendorfer (2000), the bidding behavior of alleged
cartel participants is compared to that of non-cartel bidders via a reduced form. Such analysis
of collusion cannot take place without knowledge of bidders’ formal identities. As illustrated
by Asker’s (2010) example of a ring of stamp dealers, collusion may also arise in anonymous
environments such as the auctions organized by auction houses. Our methodology would
provide a possibility of identifying asymmetries between bidders when we could jointly
observe bids from a number of bidders and the number of participants. The aim of this paper
is to lay the foundations of the econometrics of auctions with anonymous data, and to show
how to deal with asymmetric models. We adopt the so-called structural approach without any
parametric assumptions (see Paarsch and Hong (2006)), and focus on private value single-unit
auction models. We thus deal with the identification and estimation of the distribution of
bidders’ valuations. We nevertheless emphasize that the main idea of the paper can be applied
more generally, e.g. for reduced-form approaches such as under the common value paradigm
which is not in general identified: the key point here is how to recover the distribution of the
participants’ bids (up to a permutation) from data where the identities of the bidders are
unobserved.
 PAGE 9
We first adapt the definition of identifiability to a framework with anonymous bids by
requiring the unique characterization of bidders’ primitives up to a permutation of bidders’
identities. Then, in the spirit of Laffont and Vuong (1996), we explore the extent to which
anonymity reduces the possibility of identifying private-value models9 in standard auctions
with risk-neutral buyers10
. We show in Proposition 3.1 that anonymity prevents the
identification of the asymmetric affiliated private-value model, contrary to the result in Campo
et al. (2003) where bidders’ identities are observed by the econometrician. When bidders’
identities are not observed, the method that is currently implemented is to assume symmetry
as an identifying restriction and extend Guerre et al.’s (2000) nonparametric methodology
(henceforth GPV). However, the validity of this method relies on the assumption that bidders
are symmetric, an assumption that cannot be rejected for any testable restriction without
further restrictions if bids are fully anonymous. However, for auction models explicitly
involving asymmetries, or if the econometrician knows that the main feature of the underlying
market is asymmetries between bidders, this identification is inappropriate, and we propose an
alternative method. We show in Proposition 3.1 that the asymmetric independent private-value
(IPV) model is identified. One crucial step in the resolution of this inverse problem is to
recover the underlying cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of each buyer’s bids from the
CDFs of the order statistics of the bids. By exploiting independence, for any bid b, the vector
of the Nbidders CDFs at b, corresponds to the roots of a polynomial of degree N whose
coefficients are linear combinations of.
Second, we propose a multi-step kernel-based11
estimation procedure to recover the
underlying distributions12
of bidders’ private values, mainly by adapting GPV’s
nonparametric two-stage estimation procedure. We establish the uniform consistency of our
estimator. In the first-price auction, our estimator converges at the same rate as that in GPV
with nonanonymous bids, which was shown to exhibit the best rate of uniform convergence
for estimating the latent density of private values from observed bids in the symmetric IPV
model. In the second-price auction, our estimator also attains the optimal rate of uniform
convergence under nonanonymous bids. Our estimation procedure is also applicable to
situations in which the econometrician may benefit from additional information on the identity
of the winner, as in French timber auction data. We know from Aey and Haile (2002) that the
asymmetric IPV model is identified only through the observation of the highest bid and the
identity of the highest bidder. Nevertheless, the existing nonparametric methodology
generalizing GPV which only uses the highest bidding statistics may not perform very well in
small data sets. In particular, in the second stage of GPV’s estimation procedure the pseudo-
values are computed only for those bids that are not anonymous in such ‘naive’ approaches.
On the contrary, our estimation procedure uses the complete vector of bids at both stages as
well as the partial information about bidders’ identities. In particular, we obtain a pseudo
private value for each bid for each possible identity of the bidder. To estimate the distribution
of private values, we then estimate the probability that each bid comes from a given bidder.
Overall, with partially anonymous data, our methodology competes with nonparametric
techniques which also assume independence, in particular ‘naive’ approaches that throw away
anonymous bids. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that our procedure is a striking
improvement, especially for small data sets where ‘naive’ approaches are useless.
Our contribution to the econometric literature is several-fold. First, while Athey and Haile
(2002) consider nonparametric identification with incomplete sets of bids–which is
structurally the case in some auction formats such as Dutch and English auctions–we go
 PAGE 10
further by considering that the observation of the bid itself may be incomplete, insofar as the
identity of the bidder may be unknown to the econometrician. Second, we propose a
nonparametric estimation procedure corresponding to a natural generalization of GPV’s
procedure, and analyze its asymptotic properties according to the same criteria as in GPV.
Finally, our work can also be viewed as contributing to the general issue of unobserved
heterogeneity in econometrics. The bulk of existing work considers models where one single
outcome is subject to two different kinds of noise: a standard idiosyncratic noise13
and a
noise that corresponds to some underlying unobserved heterogeneity between individuals and
which has some direct interpretation. Identification usually obtains via the combination of
some parametric specification and the additivity structure, as in finite mixture distributions
(see Titterington et al. (1985)) or the mixed proportional hazard model (see Van Den Berg
(2001)). The key element for identification in our work here is the observation of multiple
outcomes. In this vein, Li and Vuong (1998) consider a deconvolution problem with multiple
indicators without making any parametric assumptions14
regarding the underlying
(continuous) noise in an additive error model: this has been applied in the empirical auction
literature by Li et al. (2000) and Krasnokutskaya (2011). Our model is of a different nature:
we impose no restrictions on the distribution of the idiosyncratic types conditional on the
unobserved heterogeneity (e.g. no additivity15
property is required), although we do assume
that this unobserved heterogeneity is discrete in nature.
The paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, we introduce the model and the definition of
identifiability under anonymity. Section 3 considers nonparametric identification, and in
particular shows that the asymmetric IPV model is identified. We then develop in Section 4 a
multi-step kernel-based estimator for this asymmetric IPV model. The new caveats resulting
from anonymity are presented. Section 5 illustrates the usefulness of our methodology via
Monte Carlo simulations. In Section 6, we set out the asymptotic properties of our estimation
procedure, and in particular the rates of uniform convergence at which we estimate the latent
densities of private values; the optimality of these convergence rates is established in
Section 7. Section 8 concludes by indicating some future lines of research. Most of the proofs
are relegated to the Appendix. The supplementary material is devoted to the exposition of
some technical or complementary elements that are less central to the paper and/or which have
close analogues in GPV.

essayant plusieurs outils, plusieurs traductions.
Or, à
anglais, ne trouvant jamais précisément « kernel-based estimation is... ».

What is Econometrics?
A term that is not heard of as often as other economic terms is ecometrics. Since it is not a
widely used term, many people probably have no idea what it is. Just like many other things in
the world, there are several opinions that vary just a bit, and just as many definitions that are
different. Some describe ecometrics as the statistical methods used by economists. Other
experts would say ecometrics are the statistical tools that provide a means for economists to
test hypotheses using real world data. Monash University describes ecometrics as a set of
quantitative techniques that are useful in making economic decisions.
Economists that utilize econometrics set up mathematical models that describe economic
relationships, test the validity of the hypothesis, and estimate the parameters to obtain a
measure of how much strength a specific influence has over different independent variables.
An example of this would be a look at how often a product is in demand based on positive
income and how the product is negatively impacted on pricing.
Just like most other scientific fields of study, there are special tools used to complete the
group required tasks. An economist tools of the trade are econometrics and econometrical
modeling. An econometric model is formulated so that the parameters can be estimated if a
person makes the assumption that the model is correct.
Questions that an economists would utilize econometrics to determine the answers, include,
Does Fiscal stimulus really boost the economy? Is the value of the Canadian Dollar impacted
by the price of oil?, Has the gap between rich people and poor people grown over the past 50
years?
Learning about economics is beneficial because it will help you to understand more about how
the world works. You will see how international trade impacts decisions on an individual,
industry, and national level. You will also notice how government policies effect the economy
and unemployment, both in a positive and negative way. »

2011 (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/01/22/business/ebay-greatly-expands-live-online-
auction-bidding.html?scp=7&sq=%22online%20auction%22&st=Search )
EBay, the largest online auction company, will announce an agreement today that allows users
to participate in live bidding at 300 auction houses worldwide.
The company announced a limited live auction service last year through its eBay Premier site.
That service was for buying works of fine art, wine and other luxury goods through a small
number of auction houses, like eBay-owned Butterfields. Today's agreement, with the London-
based company icollector, founded in 1994, will greatly expand the available live auctions and
will expose eBay's 22.5 million registered users to those sites.
Calling the agreement between the two companies a ''winning combination,'' James Corsellis,
deputy chairman of icollector, said, ''It's a marriage that never would have happened six or
nine months ago.”
Geoff Iddison, general manager of eBay Premier, said that the new agreement with icollector
would change the face of live auctions worldwide by making an online audience an essential
element.
''Auction houses will not be able to do without something like this,'' he said. Mr. Iddison noted
that the deal would extend eBay's growing business in Europe, where many of icollector's
auction houses are located. ''They seemed the ideal partner to bring those auction houses on to
eBay,'' he added.
The live auction system can be tapped into by any eBay registered member, using his or her
computer and modem to review an online catalog and to register to take part in an auction.
The member can then place absentee bids on items before the auction begins or enter live bids
during the auction. A picture of the item appears on the screen, along with the current high bid
and the ''ask price'' -- the amount the auctioneer is pushing for the next increment of bidding.
In most auctions now, participants enter their bids over several days until the auction closes.
During that time, they receive e-mails alerting them when they are outbid.
EBay has been embarrassed in recent months by a scheme in which sellers on its regular
service inflated the prices of their own goods by placing bids under other screen names.
Mr. Corsellis said that the new auctions' affiliation with respected auction houses could give
bidders a better sense of security when they try to buy expensive goods. ''There are few people
who would advise you to spend $10,000 with an individual,'' he said.
The deal between the two companies ''is almost an ideal marriage of the traditional auction
world with the reach of the Internet,'' said Derek Brown, an analyst with W. R. Hambrecht.
 PAGE 36
Because many auction houses have long allowed telephone bidding, he said, ''It almost seems
like a natural extension of the traditional way of doing business.''
Internet.

MOSES Asher. Unhappy Christmas: $1120 for an empty box through eBay. The Sydney
Morning Herald [en ligne], 20 décembre 2011
(http://www.smh.com.au/)
Australian eBay customers lured by ultra-bargain priced TV sets and other electronics have
shelled out thousands of dollars only to receive empty boxes in the mail.
 PAGE 37
Police are investigating after receiving reports from reputable eBay sellers who were tricked
into carrying out the scam by bogus job ads.
In just one instance, Christmas bargain hunters have paid $1120 for what they thought was a
55-inch Sony TV, only to receive an empty box in the mail or nothing at all.
As part of the con, scammers are using job classifieds sites including Seek to advertise "sales
manager" positions.
They specifically seek sellers with high positive feedback ratios on eBay and ask them to list
goods on their behalf.
The positive feedback lulls victims into a false sense of security and this coupled with below
wholesale prices makes the scam particularly effective. The scammers send empty boxes in
order to trick the customer into thinking the product was already on its way.
In one instance seen by this website, a seller with a 97 per cent positive feedback rating,
named virtual_fantasia, sold 10 Sony Bravia 55-inch 3D TV sets for $1120 each. The sets are
selling online at JB Hi-Fi for $1798 and on Sony's website for $2299.
The same seller also sold Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB tablets for $550. The high
quantities of items listed on each auction mean that for every individual product sold there
could be more than 10 victims.
The cheap prices caught the eye of Wojtek Czarnocki, who runs the dmavo.com.au online
store and found that the price on the tablet was "way cheaper than our wholesale price with
our regular supplier overseas".
Czarnocki attempted to buy the tablet to resell to his customers and was reassured by the
1700+ positive feedback messages and the fact that PayPal protection was offered.
"However, a few days after the sale, the seller had emailed us indicating that they were taken
advantage of and were unable to provide the product purchased," he said.
The email sent to customers by the seller, virtual_fantasia, said she had discovered she was
part of a scam and was asking PayPal and her bank to return any funds paid by buyers.
The seller, whose account has been disabled by eBay, said she had worked in the corporate
world for 10 years and found eBay work "fun". She applied for a full-time online selling job
via Seek and began selling products, but because they were "extremely cheap" she trod with
caution.
"It was not until yesterday that I became very suspicious when I phoned the boss and could
hear what sounds like pokies in the background," the seller wrote.
Then, buyers began contacting her saying their products had arrived but they were nothing
more than "an empty box".
The seller said she struggled to obtain appropriate tracking numbers for the goods she had
sold and was threatened by the boss when she refused to transfer the proceeds to him.
"It is horrible to think that someone would do this at this time of year. This has caused me
immense stress and I have been in tears for the last 24 hours," she said.
"It was not my intention to mislead any of you and I feel absolutely horrible about it."
The seller said in a phone interview that eBay was now chasing her for $5250 in fees for the
 PAGE 38
scam items, which she refuses to pay as she believes she is also a victim. She said she did the
right thing by refunding buyers and passing all relevant information on to eBay so the auction
site's heavy handedness was a "slap in the face".
"[eBay frontline support] told me they've come across this sort of thing before and the seller
just walks away," she said.
The seller said she struggled to get responses from eBay's security team beyond generic
emails, a similar criticism to that levelled at other internet companies including Facebook and
Google.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were aware of the scam and were working closely
with eBay. Police would not say how common this type of scam was or provide any further
detail about the investigation.
"eBay users should ensure they communicate with the sellers to confirm the items they are
purchasing are in the seller's possession and not being shipped by a third party," the police
spokeswoman said.
An eBay spokeswoman said this type of scam was "not common on eBay" but refused to
provide any further evidence to back this up.
eBay also refused to provide general information on where the scammers were suspected to be
located and whether victims were Australia-wide.
"We are currently working with the affected buyers to establish that they have received a full
refund," the eBay spokeswoman said.
"eBay is also working closely with the relevant law enforcement agency to assist with the
investigation. eBay expects all sellers to be confident of the legitimacy of their product
supplier before selling on the site."
Alastair MacGibbon, who was eBay's trust and safety director for Asia-Pacific for five years
but left three years ago and now runs his own security consultancy, said if you buy from a
reputable seller and properly research prices it was "extremely unlikely" you would be
defrauded.
He said the fact that the scammers had to resort to using jobs sites to recruit reputable sellers
showed eBay had been successful in driving scammers away from listing scam items directly
on the site.
"Where the real fraud has occurred is actually on the jobs websites because it's taking
legitimate eBay sellers and duping them, it's using their good reputation to then help defraud
others," he said.
"We see a whole range of crimes committed using these online jobs websites whether it's
money mules from banks or in this case eBay resellers ... a fairly high degree of responsibility
rests with the jobs websites not to allow scam ads."
Comment is being sought from NSW Police, NSW Fair Trading, Consumer Affairs Victoria
and Seek.
Separately, last week thiw website revealed another eBay merchant had exposed the personal
information of hundreds of Australian customers on the internet.
