64-bit Server Support: Market Situation

64-bit support has become mainstream and standard forUnix based servers a long time ago

NetWeaver (from 2004 on) requires 64-bit servers for all operatingsystems except Windows and LinuxOnly Windows and Linux based servers are currently still supported on32-bit hardware

Since Q3 2004 the vast majority of newly sold servers arebased on 64-bit technology

Servers based on AMD Opteron Chips and the equivalents from Intel arethe mainstream replacement of 32-bit based servers. These chips (named x86_64 or x64) can support 32-bit programs and64-bit programs as long as they are not mixed in the same processInstalled base of 32-bit servers will be fully deprecated by mid of 2008

64-bit hardware is fully supported for Windows and LinuxSAP R/3 4.6C onwards

64-bit Server Support: SAP Architecture View

32-bit application servers present increasing challenges inthe installed base

Memory limitsIncreasing tuning effortIncreasing support effortConsolidation of engines into the application server (ITS, graphicsserver, Adobe, Java VM …) increase the need for main memory

64-bit application servers can deliver major gains forperformance and throughput

More concurrently running applications on the same server #– would need different 32-bit servers

Larger table buffers, object cachesMore concurrent user sessions

But: Physical storage must be available to leverage 64-bitaddressing

64-bit addressing addresses some CPU and storage overhead8+ GB is minimum meaningful storage size

64-bit Server Support: SAP Direction

64-bit servers are required for new SAP releasesNew releases of SAP NetWeaver and SAP applications based on SAP NetWeaverwill no longer be supported on Windows 32-bit and Linux 32-bitDeveloper workplaces will still support 32-bit application servers for single useroperation

Unicode Support: Market Situation

Unicode is the established international standard tosupport multiple character sets within one consolidatedcode page and within one system

Unicode is a prerequisite for all new technologies– Java is fully Unicode based– XML is fully Unicode based– The Euro sign (€) is only represented in Unicode

Most software companies offer Unicode only softwarefor some time already

Unicode is a character encoding schema containing(almost) all characters used world wide.

Network Load(SAP GUI for Windows)

Based on parallel benchmarking of Unicode / non-Unicode customer systemsNote: The CPU/RAM figures are measured average numbers and will be different fordifferent transactions

Unicode systems need some more main memory and disk space. But: Hardware cost needs to be traded against reduced complexity.

Unicode Support: SAP Direction & Summary

Status today! All SAP offerings are Unicode-enabled and can run in Unicode mode.Non-Unicode R/3 and mySAP ERP systems with multiple codepage support(MDMP) have some serious restrictions.New SAP offerings are only offered based on Unicode.Unicode is the default installation mode in NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s) etc. andBusiness Suite 2005.Tools are ready for conversion from non-Unicode systems to Unicode systems.

OutlookNew releases of SAP NetWeaver and SAP applications based on SAP NetWeaver, which are released in 2007 or later, will no longer support new installation ofNon-Unicode systems.Non-Unicode upgrades and system copies of Single Codepage systems will stillbe possible.

All customers should plan for a full conversion to Unicode in thenext few years

Support for Heterogeneous Application Server Clusters

StrategySupport of heterogeneous configurations of application servers and database serversMain goal of heterogeneous clusters is to provide scalability by dynamically addingx86_64/x64 based commodity serversX86_64/x64 based Windows and Linux systems are also the typical common platform for 3rd

party components and engines

Status todayApplication servers and database server can run on different operating systemsCentral services can be on different operating systems than dialog serversApplication servers in one system (cluster) can run on different operating systems

– ABAP servers: available for a long time– Java servers: Made available recently

See SAP note 1067221

RestrictionsNo automatic installation procedure so far for heterogeneous clustersUpgrade procedure works also for heterogeneous systems (some manual steps required)

Plan for next release of NetWeaver (beyond NetWeaver 7.0)Common file system structure for executables of heterogeneous platformsInstallation and upgrade procedure will create new structure automatically

What is High/Continuous Availability

High Availability is the requirementto maximize system availability froman end-users point of view.

High Availability comprises much more than just a “Highly Available”Technical Infrastructure:

Reducing planned downtimes for Backup, Updates, Patches, etc.

Implement disaster recovery scenarios to minimize impacts of disasters

… improved Service Level Agreements!

Causes for Downtimes and Measures

Having a highly available TechnicalInfrastructure in place is crucial in orderto reduce “unplanned downtimes”From a technical infrastructure point ofview, the architectural and technical singlepoint of failures (SPOF) need to be identified andsecured in an appropriate manner.

“Human errors” (= 80% of downtimecauses) to be addressed by ease ofsystem management and with improvedchange and problem managementprocesses

Virtualization Goals and Challenges

Goals

CostsLicense and HW costs

Management– Increased management complexity– High number of VM’s and OS– Management on VM/OS level (not

on application level)– Adaptation to administrative IT

workflows

Operation– Increased risk in case of failures– Performance impact

Reduce IT Infrastructure Costs– Higher physical resource

utilization

Flexibility and responsiveness– Dynamic adjustment of virtual

resources– Application isolation– Application and VM provisioning

with cloning

Management– Reduced number of physical

servers to manage

Challenges

SAP Applications in Virtual Environments

Monitoring– Performance monitoring of virtual server environments challenging.– Different monitoring tools from SAP and 3rd party vendors.

Workload Management– Workload management tools of virtual server environments only deal with

OS measures.– Different management tools are needed to manage the virtual infrastructure

with the SAP systems.– Limited flexibility of SAP Instances to react on dynamically changing server

infrastructure.

SAP Licensing– SAP Licensing still bound to HW

General Guidelines:All the parallel virtual machines on a host should never require more than:

– 100% of the memory– 80% of the CPU

Take performance loss into account (memory management, networkcommunication, disk i/o)

– Experiences from SAP Linux Lab with guest Linux (VMware and paravirtualizedXEN): ~20% performance penalty

Reserved resources make behavior of parallel virtual machines on one serverpredictable

Current limitations:No monitoring of the virtualized infrastructure with VMware and XENSupport relations between SAP, virtualization vendors (VMware and XEN) andother SW vendors (e.g. DB vendors) for problems of SAP systems in virtualenvironments are not finally agreed.

– In worst case this could require a reproduction of problems in a non-virtualizedenvironment (Solution: relocate virtualized DB or SAP instance from VM to physicalserver with Adaptive Computing)

Dual Stack – Single Stack (cont’d)

Comparison of dual stack/single stack:

Initial reason for introducing “dual stack”:– Hope to address challenges of mixed technologies with one architecture

Appraisal of this approach:– Successful in the area of life-cycle management, such as effort for:

- Installation + configuration (one-time activities!)– But altogether, only some goals reached on expense of other areas, such as:

- Flexibility- Scalability

The Way Forward: Unified Life-Cycle ManagementSpanning Multiple Systems

Example: Unified Software LogisticsFor example, if you have a landscape with both ABAP and Java parts, you are lookingfor a solution for unified software logisticsUsing dual stack systems does not address this challenge at allProposed solution: Enhanced Change & Transport System (CTS)– Enhancement of existing ABAP CTS to transport also non-ABAP objects:

- Java objects (J2EE, Java EE)- SAP-specific non-ABAP technologies (such as Web Dynpro Java, SAP NetWeaver Portal)

– Combined transport requests formixed sets of objects (ABAP, Java, …)

– Simplified transport management, avoids inconsistent system states

– Central administration of all transports(ABAP, Java, …) in one UI

– Synchronized updates of mixedprocesses (ABAP/Java applications)

– Available as of SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Support Package Stack (SPS) 12

Address challenges of mixed technologies byimproved tool support for separate systems

Dual Stack – Single Stack: Recommendation

Resulting recommendation based on current plans:Where possible + offered by SAP, run new ABAP + Java pieces in separate systems:1. Benefit from advantages of “separate systems”2. Benefit from available and possible future enhancements of tool support in life-cycle

management area (such as enhanced CTS)

In individual cases, dual stack might still be a valid solution– Rate the aspects according to your individual needs– We plan to provide more recommendations how to bundle capabilities for certain use casesNo need to change existing systems– Dual stack systems will still be supported– There are still usage types that require dual stack systems (e.g. PI)

SAP JVM

Strategy and GoalJVMs have introduced a new dimension of dependency and complexityTherefore SAP has created a uniform SAP JVM (extension of Sun Hotspot JVM)Just-in-time compiler is ported for all relevant OS platforms by SAP togetherwith partners

From SAP NetWeaver 7.1 onwards, all servers will run on SAP JVM onlyBack-port of SAP JVM to NetWeaver 2004 and NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s) will be decided at alater point in timeSAP JVM for SAP NetWeaver 7.1 is JSE 5.0 compliantSAP JVM already available for SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 and SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 (Dec 2007)

Key Benefits of SAP JVMAny Java code runsCode which follows SAP guidelines benefits from additional qualities of services like better /faster failover supportSupportability enhancements

– debugging on demand– memory debugging and performance profiling– extended stack traces– Extensive monitoring and tracing

Integration into SAP startup framework

Appliance Strategy 1/2

StrategyFor some special purpose engines, it is more beneficial to reduce the supportedplatform matrix and to focus on very specific performance and TCO capabilitiesof a restricted platform set

Example 1:NetWeaver TREX (for new releases from 2007 onwards)

TREX is very much determined by CPU-performance and therefore optimized toexactly one processor architecture (x64)Future TREX releases will therefore be delivered for Windows on x64 and Linuxon x86_64 only.

Example 2: BI AcceleratorThe BI accelerator is delivered as a true ”appliance”, i.e. a specifically tuned andfully pre-configured bundle of hardware and software. The BI accelerator runsa) on IBM BladeCenter and IBM TotalStorage configurations, andb) on Hewlett Packard BladeSystem technology and Hewlett Packard StorageWorks systems.

The IBM and HP systems employ 64-bit Intel Xeon processors running in modularblade server infrastructure.
