Shear Wave Splitting in Seismology• Seismic waves: naturally generated, perfectly polarized

waves from earthquakes • Minerals: anisotropic with different wave speeds in

different propagation planes

• Follow-up homework question: How to determine the location/depth where the detected wave splitting occurs?

Learning Objectives

• Revisit the concept of wave polarization and how to generate polarized waves from recap of reading assignments

• Analyze how polarized waves work in real-life applications from video demonstration and discussion

• Apply knowledge of polarization to lighting design in homework

– Angle of light/glass?– Polarization?– Distance to painting?

Before next class• A change of careers is always a possibility. You found your dream job – you are an art

director at a local museum and you happen to know physics – awesome combination! Even more awesome, you managed to get Mona Lisa for a week! Since you cannot risk someone touching the painting, a safety glass is needed. It is your responsibility to design the safety glass, and the lighting scheme. Before next week, please design a scheme in which you minimize the glare off the safety screen for the viewers to enjoy this art marvel. Please explain what your considered in the design process, and why you made your choices. Some aspects you can consider are: – The distance of the glass to the painting– The angle of the glass or the painting with respect to the wall– The location of the light source– The polarization of light: You are given the dependence of the reflection coefficient of parallel and perpendicular

polarized light on the angle of incidence. If you were to choose a specific light polarization, which would you choose, and why? What filter would you use for this purpose, and where would you put the filter.

• Anti-glare coatings and putting the light-source behind the glass are off the table!
