    OneLightBulb.Org, an organizationdedicated to promoting energy conser-

    Nominations for Leadership LakelandClass XXVIII will be accepted fromMarch 1 through April 9, 2010, at 4:00p.m. The nomination form will beavailable in the March Forum forBusiness Monthly or online atLakelandChamber.com in the"Online Forms" section.

    Established in 1983 by the LakelandArea Chamber of Commerce,Leadership Lakeland is an annualprogram designed to identify leadersand enhance existing leadership in ourcommunity. Leadership Lakeland doesnot take public policy positions oradvocate any individual viewpoint. Theprogram unites leaders from diversebackgrounds and perspectives to improvetheir ability to lead effectively, offeringits members a broad range of experi-ences, and insights about the commu-nity, its people, its needs and its services.

    Participants in the program are selectedfrom applicants representing business,public and private agencies, and civicand professional organizations through-out the Lakeland area. The final selec-tion of members is made by a selectioncommittee. Some of the criteriaconsidered are as follows:

    Has the candidate reached aresponsible level in their chosencareer?

    Has the candidate demonstrated acommitment to serve the community?

    Does the candidate have the timeand resources to give communityservice?

    Does the candidate represent across-section of the businesscommunity, including government,community service volunteers andprofessionals?

    EMERGE Lakeland in the CommunityEMERGE Lakeland helped spread someholiday cheer at one of the Boys andGirls Clubs of Lakeland during theholiday season. Members visited withkids and helped lend a helping hand bywrapping donated presents. Membersalso had the opportunity to learn moreabout the Boys and Girls Clubs andwere given a tour of the facility.Volunteerism is one mission of EMERGE. The EMERGE LakelandVolunteer Committee is dedicated toexposing members to needs within thecommunity and venues to serve others.

    EMERGE Lakeland members alsoparticipated in the Canned TunaWreath Contest during the Bumble Bee

    and VISTE Canned Tuna Concert.The contest required entrants to build awreath using unopened cans of BumbleBee Tuna. The E for Emerge wreathwas built and decorated by members of the Marketing Committee and servedas a way to promote holiday cheer,donate food and spread the word aboutEMERGE Lakeland.

    This month we recognize a specialgroup of caring people. Dr. David Lee,DVM and his staff have been providingveterinary care for companion pets for27 years. Additionally they provide thepet owner with the knowledge necessaryto enhance their pets health andhappiness.

    Edgewood Animal Clinic (EAC) offersroutine veterinary care, surgical pro-cedures, dental health care and kennelservices. EACs laboratory and diagnosticequipment enhance their ability toprovide quality care.

    Dr. Lee credits his well trained staff as afull partner in the success of EAC. Two

    of his Certified Veterinary Technicians(CVT) has worked with him for 20 and25 years. Combining training, experience

    and team work they add value to theirwork product.

    Despite long hours at the clinic whichincludes Wednesday evening appoint-ments, Dr. Lee finds time for family,golf, Gators and civic involvement. Hehas been involved with girls and boysyouth soccer, helped with First Teeyouth golfing organization, volunteeredtime for Canine Companions forIndependence, serves on the board of Veterinary Emergency Clinic and is agraduate of Leadership LakelandClass VII.

    Carlos Luna was born in Pinar del Rio,Cuba, in 1969. In 1991, age 22, he hadthe opportunity to fulfill the desire of his

    grandmother. Her request to him in1979, when he was 9 years old was assoon as you have the opportunity, swear tous, that you will get out of Cuba. Dontlook back. Swear it! Carlos Lunasopportunity came from the University of Mexico, where he was invited to study art.He now lives in freedom in Florida withhis wife and three children.

    Carlos is now a world renowned artist.He has had solo exhibitions in Puebla,Mexico; Long Beach, California; San

    Juan, Puerto Rico; Chicago, Illinois; andin Lakeland, Florida. Hes won manyawards for his work including the Alien of Extraordinary Ability Immigrant Visawhich affords him permanent residence inthe United States.

    We hope youll come to hear the storyof his familys life in Cuba and the over-whelming obstacles that he overcame toenjoy the freedom in this country. Hisgrandparents, his aunts and uncles, andhis parents suffered under the dictator-ships of Batista and Castro. Relativeswere killed and tortured. They had theirland and possessions taken from them.

    His familys story is one of great courageand determination which serves as aninspiration to all those who hear it. Wehope youll take advantage of this incredi-ble opportunity to hear Mr. Lunas tell hisstory and his feelings about America.
