1.0 PRODUCT OVERVIEW & FEATURES
1.1 Description
Lindsay Broadband’s LBA-2000H Series EDFA is a high-power Optical Amplifier, with touch
screen LCD. The LBA-2000H series comes in 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 ports and is available in
output power range of 18dBm to 21dBm per port.
LBA-2000H is characterized by low noise and high linearity performance to meet the most
demanding requirements of CATV and FTTx applications. Well-designed ventilation and heat
dissipation ensure long life and reliable operation. Optional dual switching power supply
modules can be used for load sharing and redundancy. Powering can be 90 ~ 264VAC or -
48VDC. RJ45 Ethernet connection offers network management. The microprocessor software
monitors the laser working state and the Digital Panel touch screen LCD displays the operating
parameters, status and warning alarms. If at some point, the laser operating parameters deviate
from the permissible range set by the software, the microprocessor will automatically turn off the
laser power which offers protection for the laser. The LBA-2000H EDFA is compatible with any
FTTx PON Technology and offers a flexible and low-cost solution.

• The EDFA employs a high-powered infrared laser device that emits invisible light, which can permanently damage eye or skin on exposure.
• Avoid direct exposure of eyes & skin to the laser light source. Never stare directly into a fiber or at any mirror-like surface that could reflect light emitted from an un-terminated fiber. Never view an active fiber through optical instruments.
• Always ground the EDFA before turning on power (grounding resistance
should be less than 4 ohms), so as to prevent laser and user from static damage.
• To avoid damaging the touchscreen LCD, please do not tap it with anything
sharp or apply excessive pressure to it with your fingertips. It is recommended to use fingers when you use the touch screen LCD.
• Always turn the EDFA OFF prior to connecting/disconnecting input fiber. Also always terminate unused ports. Failure to do so may result in damage to the EDFA.

5.0 INSTALLATION
5.1 Required Equipment & Tools
• Optical power meter
• Standard fiber test jumpers
• Denatured or 99% pure isopropyl alcohol and lint free fiber optic cleaning wipes
5.2 Installation of EDFA
1) Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and an air-conditioned environment are highly
recommended for stable and long-time EDFA operation.
2) Install the EDFA in the 19” rack. Leave 1RU of space between the EDFA and other
equipment installed in the rack for proper heat dissipation. Make sure the air vents on
the bottom of the EDFA are not blocked.
3) Ensure the LBA-2000H EDFA is grounded and is mounted in a properly grounded rack,
grounding resistance should be smaller than 4Ω. Always ground the EDFA before turning
on power, so as to prevent pump, laser and user from static damage.
4) Terminate the output ports of the EDFA to prevent damage to the laser when not
connected to the system.
5) Ensure optical jumper connectors are matched properly to the device adapters. (ie.
SC/APC to SC/APC).
6) Carefully clean all the fiber optic connectors. The suggested way to clean a fiber optic
connector is to use a dedicated and dry cloth (Kimwipes ®’s fine cloth).
7) A microscope (at 100 times, 200 times) can be used to check the cleanliness of fiber
optic connector surface from any contamination or blemish.
8) Clean the EDFA connector before installing the optical test cable. 2.5 mm cleaning
swabs are available. Clean both the bulkhead and fiber connectors.
9) Measure the input optical power to the EDFA. Verify the Input optical power is in the
range of -10dBm to +10dBm. Use an optical power meter to verify that the optical input
level is within the specification. However, the Recommended Input Level to the EDFA

is 0 dBm.
10) You can now connect the Optical fiber to the OPT IN connector on the Front panel. Also
connect the optical fiber(s) to the appropriate OPT OUT(s) connection. Terminate the
unused output ports with an Optical Terminator to prevent any reflections.
11) Turn ON the EDFA.
Note: Always turn the EDFA OFF prior to connecting/disconnecting input fiber. Also always terminate unused ports. Failure to do so may result in damage to the EDFA.
12) Check the LCD display & verify that the System Initialization is in process. (see figure 3)
13) Use the Optical Power meter to verify the output Optical power meets the specification.
14) There is also an Optical Test Point on the front panel of the EDFA. Its output power is -5
to +5 dBm. You can verify the EDFA amplification at the Optical test point.
Warning signs are displayed on the Touch Screen LCD interface. They are explained below.

6.0 OPERATION AND MENU FUNCTIONS
When the EDFA is first powered ON, the touch screen LCD display will report the current EDFA
condition. See Figure 3.

1) Main Menu or Home Screen:
The main menu or home screen is displayed as shown in the right image of figure 3.

LBA-2000H has built-in power meter to monitor & display the optical power to the user interface
with ±0.2dB accuracy. Detector automatically calibrates the optical power on the EDFA via the
microcontroller (MCU). When input power is greater/lower than the input power range or high
level of back reflections or if EDFA is overheating, the LBA-2000H will turn OFF the pump
current (0%) & shut down the optical output of the EDFA. Also Default factory setting for
Amplifier mode is APC mode.

Located vertically on the right side of the touch screen graphic display are the main menus
Setup, Network and About. You can select any menu by finger touch.

The home screen also shows the warning signs as explained in previous “Installation” section.
2) Setup Menu:
This menu appears when user taps the “Setup” on the main menu. It is to select the operation
control mode of LBA-2000H and set the values of the relevant parameters. See Figure 4. Press
the “Back” button to return to the main menu/home screen.

Note: When entering or changing any settings on the LBA-2000H EDFA, it will ask to enter “PIN”. The
EDFA asks the user to enter PIN in order to avoid false touch and to prevent unauthorized users. See
Figure 5. Input PIN code and press “Save” to proceed. The default PIN code is “1111”, also labelled on top
of the EDFA. The default PIN authorization timeout is 5 minutes. If the user does not touch the screen
over 5 minutes, it asks for a PIN again. User can also go to Web Management to change PIN code and
PIN authorization timeout.

APC Mode (recommended): On the Setup menu page touch “APC” to enter APC mode.
Automatic Power Control (APC) mode sets the Optical Output to your requirement. Shown in
Figure 6. The set output power is maintained regardless of the variation in input power or pump
current or temperature. The EDFA automatically adjusts the pump current to ensure stable
desired output power. However, the user cannot exceed the minimum and maximum output
power specifications of the EDFA.
Using the numeric keypad, enter the value you want to set the Output Power at and hit save.

ACC Mode: On the Setup menu page touch “ACC” to enter ACC mode. See Figure 7.
Automatic Current Control (ACC) mode provides direct control to the amplification by managing
the pump current of the EDFA. The pump current stays stable irrespective of input power. The
pump current is set as a percentage (%) of the maximum value from the factory. By default, this
value is 80/80%. However, the output power cannot exceed the Critical Minimum and Maximum
specs of the EDFA. Using the numeric keypad enter the desired Pump Current value & save.

AGC Mode: On the Setup menu page touch “AGC” to enter AGC mode. Shown in Figure 8.
Automatic Gain Control (AGC) mode establishes and maintains the gain of the signal regardless
of the input signal or temperature. The EDFA automatically adjusts the pump current according
to input power to maintain the required gain. However, the output power and pump current
cannot exceed its minimum and maximum rating to maintain gain. For example, the gain of
EDFA is set to 20dB, and then giving the EDFA -10 dBm input power results in output power of

+10 dBm. Similarly for the same 20dB gain setting, giving the EDFA 0 dBm input power results
in +20 dBm output power. Using numeric keypad enter the value of gain and hit save.

3) Network Config Menu:
This menu appears when you tap on “Network” from the main menu and it is designed to control
and configure the network parameters of LBA-2000H EDFA. See figure 9.

Config menu. See figure 10.

Gateway: Set the default gateway address by tapping “Default Gateway” button under the
Network Config menu (Figure 13). Enter default gateway using numeric keypad and hit save.

7.0 WEB MANAGEMENT & SNMP
RJ-45 LAN port can be used to monitor and control the LBA-2000H parameters and adjust
output levels.
Connect the EDFA with a network cable to the PC RJ45 interface.
Factory network parameters of the EDFA can be found from the menu functions on the front
panel LCD. The parameters can also be found on a label on top of the EDFA equipment. Set
your PC IP address in the same network range.

Open a Web Browser. In the address bar enter 192.168.1.1, Press Enter, the login screen will
display as shown in Figure 15. The default credentials are as below:

After logging into the EDFA the home screen of the Web GUI is as shown in Figure 16. The
navigation menu is to the left of the page. Click on the required menu. The EDFA content is
displayed for the corresponding menu chosen.

Threshold page is shown in Figure 19. The user can change the critical and warning parameters
of the EDFA according to the requirements. However, the main parameters of the EDFA like
Input Power range, Output power, etc. cannot be changed. These thresholds are just to
generate an alarm on the interfaces. On this page “C” would mean critical warnings and “W”
would mean warnings.

The security page on the Web management is used to change the authorization settings of the
EDFA.
On the Web Password section user can change the credentials for log in to the EDFA via web
management.
On the Touch Screen section user can change the touch screen PIN code, the Pin Code
Authorization Time out, and the back light settings of the EDFA. Their screenshots are as shown
in Figure 23 & 24.

A Return Material Authorization (RMA) Number is required on all product returns (Regardless if Product is Being Returned to Repair or credit)
Product Received at the Lindsay Broadband Factory Without an RMA Number will be returned to Sender
RMA number must be used when returning product for credit or repair. Use of RMA numbers will ensure efficient processing. When returning product to Lindsay Broadband, please follow the simple steps below (in the order that they appear):
RETURNS
1. Fill out the Product Return Authorization Form indicating product information. Repair items do not require original invoice information, but it is helpful to determine warranty eligibility.
2. Contact Lindsay Broadband Inc. Service Department in one of three ways:

Service Repair Policy
Lindsay Broadband product may be
returned for repair under the following condition:
1. Please contact Lindsay Broadband
Service Dept. to obtain an RMA#. 2. Please supply requested
information to verify 2warranty
coverage.
Any shipments received by Lindsay
Broadband without an RMA # will be refused.
Credit Return Policy
Lindsay Broadband products may be retuned for credit under the following
conditions:
1. Products are unused and undamaged.
2. Products are accompanied by a one
dollar (new purchase) for one dollar (credit return) order.
3. Products were purchased within on
year from credit return date and are in a current catalog.
4. Products are subject to a 10% per
RMA and $2.00 per line item. 5. Products that are custom made are
subject to an additional charge for
conversion of not less than 20% and not more than 50% of the FFP
price.
6. Product that require factory repacking are subject to an
additional charge for material and
labour.
7. Please contact Lindsay Broadband
Customer Service to obtain an RMA#.
Any shipments received by
Lindsay Broadband without
an RMA# will be refused.
Note: Products that are judged by
Lindsay Broadband Inc. upon receipt as
being unacceptable for credit shall be
returned to sender at their expense.
