Panels, wall boxes and rack units A range of panels, wall boxes and rack units are availableto suit each application. Connectors can be mounted onstandard panels with splice terminations as suggestedabove. If space is at a premium at a wall box location orOB truck tailboard, the Furukawa FOP Unit integratesboth panel and splice/termination tray into a compact unit as shown. Alternatively a new rack-mounted splicing/termination unit with front panel has been developed to fit straight into your 19" rack system, further simplifying installation.

Connector pigtail assembliesConnector pigtail assemblies can be manufactured to suitrequirements and can either be provided with internalconnectors to suit the junction box or with plain ends for direct fusion splicing and wiring to a terminal block. StandardLEMO assemblies with internal connectors are available to suit the rack mounted splice unit or the FOP unit.

Accessories and tooling for field repairLEMO offers a wide range of high quality accessoriesand tooling for field repair of fibre optic connectorsand cable assemblies.

LEMO cable puller, which temporarily replaces the outershell of the connector. With an outside diameter of only17.5mm this pull-through tool also ensures that the pullingforce is applied directly to the central strength member ofthe cable, thereby protecting the optical fibres.

As with all optical devices it is necessary to keep all fibrecontacts clean and free from dirt. A regular weekly or

monthly inspection routine (or on return of OB units) isstrongly recommended. This is quick and easy and willensure high performance and long life.

Fibre splicing optionWhere it is impossible to pull through ready terminatedcables, or where replacement of connectors isanticipated due to the location at a vulnerable point, the best option is fibre splicing. Unterminated cable can be installed separately and, at an appropriate timefactory-terminated connector pigtail assemblies can be quickly spliced and terminated to the installed cable. The pigtail can either be hard wired and fusion splicedto the cable using a simple junction box, or fitted withinternal connectors to connect to a connector junction box.

Factory cable assemblies and cable pullerWherever possible it is always best to install fibre linksthat have been manufactured in factory controlledconditions. The connector is designed to be locked tothe central strength member of the cable and pullingcompleted assemblies through ducting is generallyacceptable. However, if there are concerns about thesize of the connector, one of the options is to use the

ConnectorsThe global standard for HDTV fibre connectorsThe LEMO LEMO 3K.93C HDTV Camera connectors usethe F2 type Fibre Optic contact. This contact employsceramic technology in order to achieve opticalperformance of the highest standard. Simple and fastpolishing ensures physical contact of the fibre endfaces, and the same basic contact is used in all of theconnector models. An alignment deviceis simply clipped onto the front ofthe Fibre Optic contact to convertit to female version and thisalignment device can be easilyremoved in order to cleanthe fibre endface.

The LEMO 3K.93C connector system has proven itselfin many different HD applications with over 50,000 ofthese connectors in use from studio and stadiuminstallations to regular OB van use. The LEMO systemhas increasingly been used at all major Olympic eventsfrom Atlanta in 1996 and the Nagano winter Olympicsin 1998, right through to the last year’s winter Olympicsin Turin. Other major installations include MadisonSquare Gardens, the Royal Opera House and most ofthe football arenas in Germany for the 2006 World cup.

The use of fibre optics means that transmission can be made over much longer distances using digital signals from the camera to the base station and at a much higher level of definition.

However, the performance of the interconnection is critical if this benefit is to be fully exploited. Features and benefits of the LEMO system are as follows:

• Meets SMPTE 304M ARIB and EBU standards

• Push-Pull self-latching system for quick and easy mating

• Compact design with: 2 fibres, 2 power contacts and 2 signal contacts

• Very low optical losses (< 0.30 dB) with constant repeatability at every connection

• Easy cleaning of fibre optic contacts

• Sealed for environmental protection (IP 68) to give reliable outdoor use

• Unique 5 keys (code W) system allowing smooth and blind mating

• Use of plug and socket connectors for easy chaining of cables
