The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District maintains the network of irrigation ditches, dams and levees fromCochiti Reservoir to the Bosque del Apache near Socorro. It is funded by taxes paid by property owners who livealong the Rio Grande and fees paid by farmers who use ditch water to irrigate their land.

As a 14th generation New Mexican,Barbara has family throughout the Valley,including uncles and cousins who con-tinue to farm in Los Chavez in ValenciaCounty.

Barbara’s early love of the outdoors—ex-ploring and playing in the bosque with hersiblings as a child—led to a career in parkmanagement, outdoor recreation andconservation. In 2014, Barbara retiredfrom the City of Albuquerque as theDirector of the Albuquerque Parks andRecreation Department.
