LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

WHAT IS ATMOSPHERE?

Hold your hand in front of your face and breathe deeply. Now gently blow it outward towards your finger. What do you feel ?

AIR is primary things that makes life on Earth possible .

ATMOSPHERE is a blanket of air that surrounds the Earth. It is made up of variety of gases.

TROPOSPHERE

TROPOSPHERE region that touches the earth surface It extends from 8-10 km outward from earths surface.

Air is hotter closer to the Earths surface and colder the higher up you travel.

STRATOSPHERE

STRATOSPHERE

OZONE LAYER protects and shield Earth from ultraviolet rays.

Chlorofluorocarbon

- any of several simple gaseous compounds that contain carbon, chlorine, fluorine, and sometimes hydrogen, that are believed to be a major cause of stratospheric ozone depletion.

POLLUTIONDEFORESTATION

Scientists have discovered that the ozone hole over Antarctica started in 1979, and that the ozone layer generally started to get thin in the early 1980s. The loss of the ozone layer occurs when more ozone is being destroyed than nature is creating.

WHAT COULD BE THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF THIS ?

STRATOSPHERE It extends from troposphere to about 50 km. The temperature of the lower part of stratosphere tends to remain constant . In the upper part ,the temperature increases as you move away.

The ozone layer absorbs radiation from the Sun, helping to increase the temperature in the upper portion of the stratosphere.

mesosphere

mesosphereIt extends from 50 km- 80 km above earth surface.Temperature drops to nearly -100 degrees Celsius.

Mesosphere helps protects the earth from large meteoroids that are made of rocklike materials .

METEROIDS- is a small rocky or metallic body travelling through space

How mesosphere protects Earth from meteoroids?

Heat caused by the friction between Earths atmosphere and meteoroids causes the materials to burn up.

A big meteorite can make a crater. For instance, there is a meteorite crater in Arizona.Meteorites are bits of the solar system that have fallen to the Earth.

Thermosphere

Thermosphere The temperature is very high that it reaches 2000 degrees Celsius. It extends from the mesopause to 430 miles (690 km) above the earth.

How radio and television broadcasting made possible ?

Electrically charged particles called ions are present in the thermosphere.

The lower part of the thermosphere is called IONOSPHERE.

Aurora

EXOSPHERE

EXOSPHEREThe air pressure there is very, very low. The Exosphere is the outermost layer of the atmosphere and extends from the thermopause to 6200 miles (10,000 km) above the earth.

Lets watch a video.

ACTIVITY TIME !Group 1

Make a song about the Layers of the Atmosphere .Group 2

Make a poem about the importance of Layers of the Atmosphere .Group 3Draw the layers of the atmosphere and paste the cut out pictures on the layers of the atmosphere where objects can be found.
