POLYMER MODIFICATION

• Very often polymers have excellent bulk properties, but lack surface properties such as hydrophilicity, conductivity or biocompatibility needed for a lot of applications.

• By surface modification, the chemical and physical properties of polymer surfaces can be altered without affecting bulk properties.

• The properties of polymers can be controlled by modification of preformed commercial polymers. This process is called polymer modification.

EFFECT OF LAYERED NANO-PARTICLES IN POLYMER MODIFICATION

• Layered silicate nanofillers improve the properties of the polymers in which they are dispersed.

• Two types of structures may be obtained, namely Intercalated nanocomposites where the polymer chains are

sandwiched in between silicate layers Exfoliated nanocomposites where the separated individual

silicate layers are more or less uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix.

• They exhibit enhanced properties at very low filler level such as increased Young’s modulus and storage modulus, increase in thermal stability and gas barrier properties and good flame retardancy.
