IMITATING GOD Laws would be entirely unnecessary if we lived perfect lives. As we know all too well, however, we often fall short of the good intentions that we cherish in our hearts. Perhaps the law would even be unnecessary if we lived alone, isolated from other people. After all, what hermit in a cave actu-ally needs a commandment to charge no in-terest on a loan? But God’s design for hu-manity includes togetherness. And when we live together, we tend to step on each other’s toes. Thank God for laws that help us to live in community with justice and compassion. Underlying every one of God’s laws is an eternal longing for fairness and fullness. What’s more, God’s own self—a vibrant community of Father, Son, and Spirit—reveals the deep joy of living in peace with self and neighbor. The Trinitarian nature of God—three persons in one God—astonishes us with its commitment to fruitful love. Love is gratuitous and lavish, constantly producing and giving of itself. The more generously we love God, self, and neighbor, the more we will know that, as Saint Paul says, “love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10).

Why do Catholics pray and offer the Mass for the dead? The Bible clearly teaches the rightness of prayers for the dead in 2 Maccabees (12:40, 42, 44-45): "Then under the tunic of every one of the dead they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was why these men had fall-en....And they turned to prayer, beseeching that the sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted out....For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead...He made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin." St. Paul teaches this in a similar way: "Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?" (1 Corinthians15:29). This indicates prayer and fasting for the dead. The word baptism often symbolical-ly refers to penances (Mark 10:38-39; Luke 3:16, 12:50). The apostle Paul also appears to be praying for a dead per-son, Onesiphorus, in 2 Timothy 1:16-18. The Vatican Council II affirmed, "This sacred council ac-cepts loyally the venerable faith of our ancestors in the living communion which exists between us and our brothers who are in the glory of heaven or who are yet being purified after their death..." (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, No. 51). Therefore, just as we pray for each other and share each other's burdens now, the faithful on earth can offer prayers and sacrifices to help the departed souls undergoing purifica-tion, and no better prayer could be offered than that of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Therefore, the offering of Mass and other prayers or sac-rifices for the intentions of the faithful departed are good and holy acts. This practice is not new. The Catechism asserts, "From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic Sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may at-tain the beatific vision of God" ( Catechism of the Catholic Church No. 1032).

EL ESTADO DE DERECHO Cualquiera que haya leído el Pentateuco (Génesis, Éxodo, Levítico, Números y Deuterono-mio) de principio a fin aprecia la enorme influencia de la ley en nuestros antepasados en la fe. En los primeros cinco libros de la Biblia no hay escapatoria de la ley, su meticuloso detalle, regula-ciones implacables, decretos y pronunciamientos de Dios a Moisés y a Aarón. También algo común en estos libros, por desgracia, son las historias del pue-blo elegido de Dios que se extravía. El predominio de la ley nos recuerda que somos criaturas con tendencia a pecar; Dios nos proporcio-na la ley a nosotros, hijos amados, para regular nues-tro comportamiento y ayudarnos a vivir más pacífi-camente en la tierra. MISA DE RECUERDO POR TODOS LOS FIELES DIFUNTOS

Acompañanos el Lunes 2 de No-viembre a las 7:30 pm. En el parqueadero

de la Iglesia. Favor traer su propia silla pa-ra la celebración de la Eucaristía por todos

los Fieles Difuntos. Tambien traer una veladora blanca para

ofrecerla por todos los que han muerto espe-cialmente este ano con la pandemia del Co-

rona Virus.

.¿Por qué los católicos oran y ofrecen la Misa por los muertos?

La Biblia enseña claramente la rectitud de las oracio-nes por los muertos en 2 Macabeos (12:40, 42, 44-45): "Entonces bajo la túnica de cada uno de los muertos encontra-ron señales sagradas de los ídolos de Jamnia, que la ley prohí-be que los judíos lleven. Y se hizo evidente para todo que esta era la razón por la que estos hombres habían caído... Se volvie-ron a la oración, suplicando que el pecado que se había cometi-do pudiera ser totalmente borrado... Porque si no esperaba que los que habían caído se levantaran de nuevo, habría sido su-perfluo e insensato orar por los muertos... He hecho expiación por los muertos, para que fueran liberados de su pecado." San Pablo enseña esto de manera similar: "De lo contrario, ¿qué quiere decir que la gente sea bautizada en nombre de los muertos? Si los muertos no son criados en absoluto, ¿por qué las personas son bautizadas en su nombre?" (1 Corintios 15:29). Esto indica oración y ayuno por los muertos. La palabra bautismo a menudo se refiere simbólicamente a las penitencias (Marcos 10:38-39; Lucas 3:16, 12:50). El apóstol Pablo también parece estar orando por una persona muerta, Onephorus, en 2 Timoteo (1:16-18). El Concilio Vaticano II afirmó: "Este sagrado concilio acepta lealmente la venerable fe de nuestros antepasados en la comu-nión viva que existe entre nosotros y nuestros hermanos que están en la gloria del cielo o que aún están siendo purificados después de su muerte..." (Constitución Dogmática sobre la Igle-sia, No 51). Por lo tanto, así como oramos el uno por el otro y comparti-mos las cargas de los demás ahora, los fieles en la tierra pue-den ofrecer oraciones y sacrificios para ayudar a las almas di-funtas que se someten a purificación, y no se podría ofrecer una mejor oración que la del Santo Sacrificio de la Misa. Por lo tanto, la ofrenda de la Misa y otras oraciones o sacrificios por las intenciones de los fieles difuntos son actos buenos y santos. Esta práctica no es nueva. El Catecismo afirma: "Desde el principio la Iglesia ha hon-rado la memoria de los muertos y ha ofrecido oraciones en su-fragio por ellos, sobre todo el sacrificio Eucarístico, para que, así purificados, alcancen la visión beatífica de Dios" (Núm. 1032). Que Dios les conceda el eterno descanso en su reino!!

Quizás la ley sería incluso innecesaria si viviéramos solos, aislados de otras personas. Después de todo, ¿qué ermitaño en una cueva necesita un mandamiento para no cobrar intereses en un préstamo? Pero el diseño de Dios para la humanidad in-cluye la unión. Y cuando vivimos juntos, tendemos a pi-sarnos los pies unos a otros. Gracias a Dios por las leyes que nos ayudan a vivir en comunidad con justicia y com-pasión. Detrás de cada una de las leyes de Dios hay un eterno anhelo por la justicia y la plenitud. Lo que, es más, Dios mismo, una vibrante comunidad de Padre, Hijo y Espíritu, revela la profunda alegría de vivir en paz con uno mismo y con el prójimo. La naturaleza trinitaria de Dios, tres personas en un solo Dios, nos asombra con su compromiso de amor fruc-tífero. El amor es gratuito y abundante, produciéndose constantemente y dándose a sí mismo. Cuanto amemos más generosamente a Dios, a nosotros mismos y al próji-mo, más sabremos que, como san Pablo dice, “el amor es el cumplimiento de la ley” (Romanos 13:10).
