4—LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY
ILLINOIS
PARALEGAL
ASSOCIATION
By: Caren Mansfield, a
member of the IPA
It has been some time
since I discussed the Illinois
Paralegal Association: what
it is and what it does.
Today’s article reminds us
about the IPA.
The IPA was established
1973 as Chicago Associa-
tion of Paralegal Assistants
[CAPA], and was a founding
charter member of NFPA.
By 1976 the association had
already expanded to include
members outside Chicago
and the articles of incorpora-
tion were amended and
CAPA became known as
Illinois Paralegal Associa-
tion.
The purpose of the Asso-
ciation is to promote com-
munication between the
paralegal profession, the
legal profession and other
organizations; to encourage
the continuing education of
paralegals and to inform
members of developments
in the paralegal profession
and to engage in any activi-
ties, permitted by law, to
promote the paralegal pro-
fession
The IPA has grown to
include slightly under 1700
members. The membership
includes member categories
of regular, associate, student
and sustaining.
The IPA is a volunteer
organization. The Board of
Directors handles the opera-
tion of the IPA with the
assistance of the Executive
Director. There are eleven
elected directors with five 2
year terms on odd years and
six terms on even years.
The Executive Director is
a vital part of the IPA. She
links members, assists with
communication, mailings,
and generally provides a sta-
ble link for the membership.
Many committees have
been formed to take on tasks
in the IPA. They perform
tasks critical to the IPA and
its members. Some of the
committees are: Education,
Ethics Task Force, The
Lookout Editor, NFPA rep-
resentatives, Outlook Editor,
Pro Bono, Professional Liai-
son, Recovery of fees, Reg-
ulation, Standards, and Stu-
dent Liaison.
Because it is a statewide
organization geographic
sections were formed to
include members not only in
the Chicago and suburban
areas but also in central and
southern Illinois. Specialty
sections were formed to
accommodate the needs of
members: Corporate,
Labor/employment employ-
ee benefits, Estates and
Trusts, Freelance, Immigra-
tion, Information Technolo-
gy, Intellectual Property,
Litigation, Real Estate and
Senior.
To keep members in
touch with issues in the
paralegal profession, to pro-
vide continuing legal educa-
tion and to provide network-
ing opportunities the IPA
sponsors annual Spring and
Fall education conferences
monthly board meetings,
section and speciality meet-
ings as well as social func-
tions. Publications keep
members up to date through
the monthly Lookout and the
Outlook which is published
three times a year, and the
annual Salary Survey. Other
prepared publications are
the Code of Ethics, the Stan-
dards and Utilization of Par-
alegals, The Quality of Par-
alegal Services, and mem-
bership handbook. Mem-
bers can keep in touch elec-
tronically through the IPA
website at or the listserve.
Paralegals in Illinois
have a tremendous opportu-
nity to be active members of
the profession through
membership in the IPA.
Make a difference...join the
IPA and volunteer today.

the IPA visit the IPA website

I give this resume and cover letter three gavels and would give itmore if the candidate decreased the amount of unnecessary verbiagein both documents.
In regard to the resume, most employers find concrete examples ofexperience persuasive. However, an employer has to sift through thisresume to find the "experience gems," and this candidate is doingher/himself a disservice. I would recommend reformatting thisresume so that it includes clearly defined bullet-points of experience. Each bullet-point should include a single, well-thought and detailedexample of this candidate's experience.
My same critique applies to the "SKILLS" section of the resume.Important information, such as this candidate's WPM score, is lostwithin the wordy paragraph. In order to more persuasively displayher myriad of skills, this candidate should consider using bulletpoints and a series of two to three columns. The columns will help toensure that this section of her resume does not waste space.
I also would encourage this candidate to further describe theeducation section of the resume. While I can infer from the term"ongoing" that this candidate has not yet received the program degreeor certificate, I want to know when she started the program, whatlevel she has reached, and which courses she has already taken.Lastly, I always encourage candidates to carefully proofread theirresumes, even asking a friend or trusted advisor to do the same. There is a typographical error in almost the first line of this resume -the space between the S and E in SECRETARY. Some employerswill see this error and immediately stop reading a resume. Further, anerror in a resume implies that a candidate lacks attention to detail -something you never want to mistakenly convey in the legal industry!Alexis Reed, Esq.Attorney Placement DirectorSpecial Counsel150 N.
