Welcome to Lavender Weekend, home of the Sequim Lavender Festival and the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire

For close to two decades, Sequim and the surrounding Dungeness Valley have been internationally recognized as premiere growers of lavender.

Family-owned farms are prized for the special attention they give to growing the nest lavender in the country.

Sequim is bursting with activity during this three-day celebration of every-thing lavender that draws tens of thousands of visitors to Sequim each year.

Lavender Weekend runs Friday, July 19, through Sunday, July 21.It includes the original Sequim Lavender Festival, now in its 17th year, and

the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, celebrating its third year. The Sequim Lavender Festival features a free, self-guided tour of several working

lavender farms and a vibrant Street Fair, also free, located in downtown Sequim.Purchasing a ticket for the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire’s Heritage Farm Tour

gains access to iconic lavender farms across the Dungeness Valley, all which host festivals of their own. The Farm Faire also hosts the Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park, a free event set up at Carrie Blake Park where attendees will nd crafts, food, music and more.

In addition to the Sequim Lavender Festival and the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, there are several community events planned to keep visitors busy — turn to Page 14 to learn about some of these. If you’re in town the week prior to the ofcial Lavender Weekend, you can get a glimpse of the fun at several events that are held beforehand. Turn to Page 19 for details.

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley is cradled in the “rain shadow” of the Olympic Mountains and has an ideal microclimate for growing lavender.

Because of Sequim’s unique conditions and two groups of dedicated farmers, the lavender of Sequim has received worldwide recognition for its superior qual-ity and fragrance.

Join the members of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association to celebrate the beauty of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and the town’s favorite plant.

Farm Strong features musicians Cort Armstrong and Jim Faddis, who are joined by Rick Meade on Dobro and John Pyles on bass as they play a mix of blue-grass, blues and country songs.

Final Approach is a versatile and popular ve-piece band that performs all the great songs from the ’50s through the ’70s, including rock ’n’ roll, bluegrass, ballads and lots of rockin’ dance music! With Amanda Bacon on vocals, prepare for take off!

Hot Club Sandwich brings its unique character to the acoustic swing and gypsy jazz pioneered by Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grapelli’s quintet of the Hot Club of France. With original compositions, lightheart-ed vocal numbers, clever arrangements and elements of Latin acoustic music, Hot Club Sandwich aims to please with its swinging gypsy jazz, Louisiana blue-grass, Middle Eastern, Latin and funk folk rhythms.

Kevin Magner & Locos Only blends original tunes with an eclectic array of soulful American roots music that subtly hints in uences of rhythm and blues, folk, rock, country and bluegrass.

Larry Murante is one of the nest contemporary singer-songwriters to emerge from the Northwest in recent times. The grand prize winner of the 2009 John Lennon songwriting contest, Larry is known for his strong guitar style, soaring vocals and engag-ing stage presentations.

Mary Tulin performs Celtic Folk Noire — old songs made new from the Celtic lands, England and Scot-land. She’ll also entertain with guitar instrumentals and the odd bit of folk rock from the last century.

Michael Guthrie is the real deal, a throwback to the ’60s and a true songster. He is a blend of bluesman, folksinger, storyteller and singer-songwriter.

Porto Alegre Music celebrates the music of Brazil and Latin America — bossas, sambas, mambos, cha-chas and meringues — with a few select swing songs pep-pered into the mix.

This group is guaranteed to make your blood ow, your hips sway and your toes tap!

Shula Azhar, one of the best dance troupes perform-ing in the Paci c Northwest, presents the art of “bellydance” at its nest. Enjoy their sensual and technically awesome dancing, fabulous costumes and exotic choreography.

Tanga combines the core of the popular Latin jazz band Manteca with exciting new musicians perform-ing lively tunes.

The name stems from, among other things, the earliest known Latin jazz tune performed in 1943. This exciting rhythmic music is made for dancing.

Twisted Roots is made up of Bob Lawrence-Markarian, Marty Kalor and Leo Bidne.

The group experiments with sound, playing both traditional and modern tunes with unusual instru-mental combinations. You may hear a traditional song followed by a Blind Faith tune, twisting things up a bit!

Whatererly Brothers — Dan Roberts, Chris Glanister and Matthew Moeller — have roamed the Paci c Northwest performing solo and together, and delight-ing audiences along the way.

Drawing from a rich and varied musical history, their infectious music will keep you smiling and tapping your toes as they live the motto, “No musical style is sacred!”

Witherow features Wintergrass veteran Abby Mae (of Abby Mae and the Homeschool Boys) and innovative guitar ace Dillan Witherow as they team up to form this new, exciting duo.

Abby Mae’s daring and haunting voice mixes with Dillan’s soulful vocals and dynamic guitar instru-mentals to create unforgettable music.

Street Fair Music StageThe Sequim Lavender Festival brings together musical artists for three days of free music. The stage is set up at the Street Fair. Ample seating is available on shaded lawns, and the food court and beer and wine garden are nearby.

Featured artwork for Lavender Weekend

“Lavender Quail Watch”by Julie Peterson

“Lavender Quail Watch” by Moses Lake painter Julie Peterson was selected as the poster for the 17th Sequim Lavender Festival. In the painting, a tiny Cali-fornia quail sits atop a birdhouse while quail chicks scour the ground beneath lavender plants.

Peterson’s painting was selected by the Sequim Lavender Growers Association from about 30 entries.

Peterson, a native of Bellingham, is a self-taught art-ist who has been selling paintings during the lavender festivities for the past decade. Even at a young age, she had a love for art. After raising a family, she began her career as a full-time artist in 1996.

Her medium is in oils on canvas and hardboard. She paints urban, rural and wildlife landscapes in a style described as traditional realism.

For painting the poster, she received a cash prize, free vendor booth space at this year’s Street Fair and lifetime booth admittance to future festivals.

More of her work can be seen at juliepeterson.net.

“Lavender Fields Forever”by Lee Oskar

The Sequim Lavender Farmers Association chose Lee Oskar’s painting “Lavender Fields Forever” to represent the 2013 Sequim Lavender Farm Faire.

The artwork brings his vision of lavender back to the farmers who grow it. The painting features rows of deep purple brushes stretching toward a blue sky guarded by a row of trees that stretches across the horizon.

Oskar is known as the manufacturer of the Lee Oskar harmonica and still creates and performs music on stage as well as expresses himself with acrylics on canvas. His paintings capture an almost photographic quality of realism.

Lee will have a booth at the Arts & Crafts Faire in the Park where visitors can pur-chase a signed poster as well as other prints. Proceeds from the sale of glice prints will be donated to the Farmers Association.

More of Oskar’s work can be seen at leeoskarpaintings.com.
