Welcome to Lavender Weekend, home of the Sequim Lavender Festival and the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire.

For close to two decades, Sequim and the surrounding Dungeness Valley have been internationally recognized as the premier growers of this fragrant herb.

Family-owned farms are prized for the special attention they give to growing the finest lavender in the country.

Sequim is bursting with activity during this three-day celebration of everything lavender that draws tens of thousands of visitors to Sequim each year for the largest lavender event in North America.

Lavender Weekend runs Friday, July 20, through Sunday, July 22.It includes the original Sequim Lavender Festival, now in its 16th year,

and the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, celebrating its second year.You’ll find a brief description of both events on Page 7, from there, flip

through the section for more information about the Festival’s Street Fair, the Faire’s Lavender in the Park and both organizations’ farm tours.

In addition to the Sequim Lavender Festival and the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire, there are several community events planned to keep visitors busy — turn to Page 24 to learn about some of these.

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley is cradled in the “rain shadow” of the Olympic Mountains and has an ideal microclimate for growing lavender.

With less than 20 inches of rain per year, the climate is similar to the Provence region of France, where lavender thrives.

Because of Sequim’s unique conditions and two groups of dedicated farmers, the lavender of Sequim has received worldwide recognition for its superior quality and fragrance.

Farmers from the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association have more than 200 years of combined experience cultivating lavender, developing the best planting and growing practices and creating superb lavender products.

Join them during Lavender Weekend to celebrate the beauty of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and its favorite plant.


Getting around SequimThe City of Sequim and the two local lavender associations coordinate efforts to ensure visitors to the 2012 Sequim Lavender Weekend have an enjoyable and confusion-free experience during the North Olympic Peninsula’s largest tourism event

Information BoothsIn an effort to ensure that all visitors receive compre-

hensive information about what to do during the week-end, information booths will be located at the Sequim Lavender Festival Street Fair, the Open Aire Market (on Saturday and Sunday) and at both the east and west sides of Lavender in the Park.

These booths will be staffed by representatives from both associations. If you are interested in volunteering to work in an information booth, contact one of the lavender associations directly. >>

The Sequim-Dungeness Chamber of Commerce will also be hosting two visitor information centers, which are located at 1192 E. Washington St. and 163 W. Washington St. There will be map kiosks located at the J.C. Penney parking lot, QFC parking lot and in downtown Sequim.

What about pets?Dogs on a leash are welcome at the Sequim Laven-

der Festival Street Fair and at Lavender in the Park. Some of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association

farms allow pets, but you need to check with the indi-vidual farms (phone numbers are listed on Pages 12 and 13).

If your dog needs a break, there is an off-leash dog park at Carrie Blake Park.

Dogs are not permitted at farms participating in the Heritage Farm Tour and cannot be allowed on the in-city shuttle buses or farm tour bus.

However, pet-sitting services are provided for your pet’s comfort and enjoyment. The Sequim Lavender Farm Faire is partnering with Gentle Paws, a local therapy dog group, to offer pet sitting services at Car-rie Blake Park’s Water Reuse Demonsration Site, 202 N. Blake Ave.

The service is sponsored by Best Friend Nutrition, a health food store for pets located in Sequim. Pet-sitting is located at the southwest corner of the park.

Sequim’s Lavender Weekend comprises the Sequim Lavender Festival and the Sequim Lavender Farm Faire

The Sequim Lavender Festival will celebrate its 16th year in the heart of Sequim and the surrounding Dungeness Valley during this year’s Lavender Weekend celebration. The Street Fair is located in downtown Sequim and is the hub of activity for the festival. Turn to Page 8 to learn more about the Street Fair’s shopping, dining and musical entertainment attractions.

Seven of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association’s member farms are open free to the public for self-guided visits during Lavender Weekend.

These family farms are a part of the agri-tourism community. Using a driv-ing guide map, visitors to these intimate farms can enjoy U-Pick lavender, shopping in the farm gift shops and photography opportunities.

Each farm has its own identity and is sculpted according to the dreams and visions of its resident owners. Famers will be on hand to meet guests.

There is no bus transportation, but each farm has parking available. See Page 12 for more information on the Festival’s Farms on Tour.

Lavender in the Park is an all-day, family-friendly celebration and the cen-tral hub of the Farm Faire.

Surrounded by lush green lawns and gardens, the park includes more than 100 booths with lavender, juried crafts, music, food, exhibits and community groups. Turn to Page 10 for more information.

The Heritage Farm Tour features seven stunning lavender farms — family owned and operated farms that have helped make Sequim famous for 16 years.

Each farm is a beautiful destination and during Lavender Weekend, a fes-tival in itself with fields of lavender, plants, products, food, music, beverages, crafts, workshops, exhibits and more.

Visit the farms at your own pace. There is plenty of free parking, or take the farm tour buses (included in your ticket) from Lavender in the Park.

Lavender Festival’s Street FairMore than 150 crafts and lavender booths, food, music and more in downtown Sequim. Admission is free. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The center of the Lavender Festival is a commu-nity-spirited Street Fair on Fir Street where visitors will be surrounded by three days of continuous musi-cal entertainment.

It wouldn’t be a Lavender Festival without fine lavender products. Thirteen members from the Se-quim Lavender Growers Association (SLGA) will be at the Street Fair for all of your lavender needs.

A talented group of artists, jewelers, photogra-phers and craftsmiths will showcase their products for purchase.

There will also be a custom car show and a quilters show nearby. Find more information about the car

show on Page 20 and the quilter’s show on Page 26.The high-end juried street fair has all forms of

art techniques and media, photography, pottery, metalwork, leatherwork, carvings, jewelry, fibers and precious minerals and rocks.

There is nothing lacking for the discerning ap-petite, vegan or hot dog lover, at the festival’s food court. They’ll be serving up barbecue, lavender ice cream, crab cakes and salmon, pizza, Greek food and Thai, coffee and freshly made crepes.

Food vendors were selected to be part of the festi-val for their menus, friendliness and commitment to customer satisfaction.

Local wines and beer are featured in the Wine & Beer Garden. And new this year: purchase a Sequim Lavender Festival wine glass filled with lavender wine.

Come by the SLGA booth and purchase a chance to win a quilt donated by the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club — all proceeds from the quilt raffle go directly to the Sequim High School scholarship fund.

The Street Fair is located in downtown Sequim on Fir Street between Sequim and Third avenues.

Coming from Seattle, take the Washington Street exit off Highway 101.

There is plenty of free parking at the QFC lot on the east side of town, and catch the city’s free shuttle to the Street Fair.

From the west side of town, take River Road exit of Highway 101, turn left and continue to the J.C. Penny lot for free parking and to catch the free shuttle to the Street Fair.

Free shuttle buses run every 30 minutes to the Street Fair from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Sat-urday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Kevin Magner & Locos Only is led by local

troubadour Kevin Magner. Locos Only blends original tunes with an eclectic array of soulful American roots music that subtly hints of influ-ences of rhythm and blues, folk, rock, country and bluegrass.

Larry Murante is one of the finest contemporary singer-songwriters to emerge from the Northwest in recent times. The grand prize winner of the 2009 John Lennon songwriting contest, Larry is known for his strong guitar style, soaring vocals and engaging stage presentations.

Ravin’ Wolf was voted Best Blues Duo by the Wash-ington Blues Society. With the spirit of blues roots and folk rock tradition, RavinWolf unleashes its own brand of sagebrush jug jam — complete with swampy slide, acoustic rock-fusion guitar grooves, stellar vocal har-mony, world-class lead guitar, and original roots, blues and folk /rock infused energetic music.

Shula Azhar is one of the best dance troupes per-forming in the Pacific Northwest. Shula Azhar pres-ents the art of bellydance at its finest. Enjoy their sensual and technically awesome dancing, fabulous costumes and exotic choreography.

Tacoma Scots Pipe Band, formed in 1971, has provided thousands of fans across the Pacific Northwest with music and ceremony that stirs the hearts of young and old. The swing of the kilt and the swirl of the pipes has delighted people for centu-ries. Several pipers and a drummer from the Tacoma Scots Pipe Band, dressed in true Highland Sinclair tartans, carry on this entertaining tradition of rous-ing bagpipe music.

Tanga combines the core of the popular Latin jazz band Manteca with exciting new musicians perform-ing lively tunes. The name stems from, among other things, the earliest known Latin jazz tune performed in 1943. This exciting, rhythmic music is made for dancing.

Watch the Sky is a longtime member of the Seattle music scene and excels in contemporary and traditional Celtic ballads, pub songs and folk tunes.

Standing on Shoulders is an acoustic folk duo comprising Abby Mae and Dillan Witherow, who brings tight harmonies over the top of intricate instrumental arrangements. Something to see for sure!

Experience art, music, stunning crafts, great foods, wine and beer, exhibits and festivities for everyone — especially the kids.

Lavender in the Park is the hub for the Faire farm tour buses and the in-city shuttle service.

Park right next to the Carrie Blake Reuse Dem-onstration Park, 202 N. Blake Ave. A $2 donation is suggested for parking, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the Sequim High School Band Boosters.

Here are some of the many activities at the free Lavender in the Park:

Opening ceremonies Friday at 11:30 a.m. with Ciscoe Morris, the Northwest’s favorite gardener and the 133rd Army Band.

More than 100 booths featuring lavender prod-ucts and plants, juried hand-made crafts, food, com-munity organizations and family activities.

Fourteen of the region’s best food booths with

lots of tables and chairs for seating. A Lavender Tea Garden hosted by Cedarbrook Lavender and Herb Farm and a Wine & Beer Garden with Olympic Peninsula Wineries and Olympic Distribu-tors that provides a great selection of local wines and regional beers right next to the stage.

Music with the amazing acoustic qualities of the James Center Band Shell.

First Federal Boys & Girls Club Kid’s Faire (Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) — bring the kids to an old-fashioned fair with carnival games, including the ring toss and dart toss, races like the gunny sack race grouped by ages, water bal-loon toss, needle in a haystack, watermelon eating contest and more. Everything is free, and everyone is welcome to join in the family fun.

Hot air balloon at the field, weather permitting. Community links showcase more than 15

nonprofit and government agencies with exhibits and family activities. The Faire provides free space to nonprofit organizations, and all funds raised go directly to the participating nonprofit organizations.

Northwest Raptor & Wildlife Center is nation-ally renowned for its work rescuing and rehabilitat-ing the wildlife of the Olympic Peninsula. You will be dazzled and educated through an interactive pro-gram showcasing its ambassador animals.

Sequim Irrigation Festival float will be at the Faire on Sunday only. Olympic Peninsula Garden brings lavender and more right next to the tea gar-den. Shiso Sister City Garden is at the entrance to Carrie Blake Park.

Olympic Gentle Paws pet-sitting is a safe and secure place to leave your pet while you enjoy Sequim Lavender Weekend. See Page 5 for more de-tails. Handicap parking is now available inside the park, near the stage and booths, via the production entrance off North Rhodefer Road. Thanks to Olym-pic Wi-Fi, there is free Wi-Fi access.

The park, the spacious lawns, the music, food, crafts, exhibitors, family activities, a hot air balloon and raptors — all in one place — make for a very special Sequim Lavender Weekend and it’s all free for the entire family, your friends and neighbors.

Take in the Sequim Lavender Festival’s free Farms on TourDrive-at-your-own-pace tour takes you to Sequim’s quaintest farms

Farms on the Festival’s tour are all members of the Sequim Lavender Growers Accociation (SLGA), a group dedicated to saving the agricultural lands of the Olympic Peninsula and rejuvenating the local economy with ecotourism that celebrates the area’s rural history. The farm tour allows guests to leisurely drive or bike from farm to farm. No buses travel to these farms, but entrance is free. Hours for all farms are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Blackberry Forest is just half a mile north of John Wayne Marina. Follow West Sequim Bay Road and turn onto Forrest Road to its end.

Pets with well-behaved owners are most welcome, and there’s lots of open space for children to run and play. Views of Sequim Bay and the mountains make this 15-acre farm field a great place for photos and picnics. They have U-Pick lavender and U-Pick Himalayan blackberries, plus “handmade in Sequim” souvenirs for purchase.

Farms on the Heritage Farm Tour include the two oldest lavender farms in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley — Purple Haze Lavender Farm and Olympic Lavender.

Each of these seven farms is a beautiful destination and a festival within itself with thousands of lavender plants in the ground as well as workshops, demonstra-tions, food, music, beverages, crafts, U-Pick and more.

You can easily spend a whole day at any farm. Farmers live on the land they work. They will share

their techniques for cultivating, harvesting, drying and using lavender throughout the weekend.

Visit the farms at your own pace, relax and take in the aroma of lavender that fills the air.

Faire Farm Tour TicketsVisit all seven farms for one price for the entire

weekend. Advanced tickets are $10 until July 19. During the weekend, tickets are $15, with active

duty military and their dependents $10. Children 12 and younger are free.

Each farm has plenty of free parking, and you can

visit the farms as often as you please or you can take the Farm Tour buses included in the ticket price.

As you visit each farm, get your souvenir passport stamped. Visit at least three farms plus Lavender in the Park and then turn in your entry form to be entered into a drawing for great prizes including the grand prize — a handmade quilt donated by the Sun-bonnet Sue Quilt Club.

Lost Mountain LavenderJeremiah’s BBQ will offer

Washington LavenderA special High Tea will be served at

10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the large glassed-inn piazza of this luxury bed and breakfast, right on the Straight of Juan de Fuca with views of Victoria.

The three-tiered catered tea service includes lavender and other delicacies. Advance reservations required; $32.50 per person including tax and gratuity.

For those who would like to take a full tour of the inn, just add an addition-al $5 to the purchase of your tea ticket.

Reservations may be made at the Washington Lavender booth at Lav-ender in the Park, at the gift shop on the farm or by calling 360-452-5207 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Admission also requires a farm tour ticket.

The menu includes: ham and laven-der cheddar scones, lavender touched biscuits, dried cherry scones, assorted sweet butters and local strawberry jam, open face salmon salad and more.

In addition to High Tea, outside at the Carriage House, there will be lavender lemonade, iced lavender coffee, lavender ice cream, lavender snickerdoo-dles, lavender oatmeal cookies and hot dogs or bratwursts with lavender slaw.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 a.m., chefs will create a four-course lavender meal on the garden grill at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave. Enjoy the cooking demon-stration and learn the secrets for cook-ing with lavender and herbs.

Check out the local lavender wine made by Olympic Cellars Winery. Its La Mélange Nouveau, “The New Blend,” features the infusion of the “Melissa” lavender species from Purple Haze into their coastal varietal Müller-Thurgau wine.

Finnriver Farm is creating a special, limited-edition lavender black currant infused botanical hard cider that will only be offered at the Faire’s Wine & Beer Garden.

“Lavender Bee” by Melanie Reed Arrington is the Sequim Lavender Festival’s chosen artwork for 2012.

A Fourth of July family vacation to the “Blue Hole” inspired Melanie to move to Sequim.

The beauty of the Olympic Mountains and the fields of lavender in bloom captivated her imagination.

Before moving to the area, her work focused mainly on people. Now, much of her artwork is a tribute to the magnificent scenery of the Dungeness Valley.

Melanie grew up in a similarly small, slow-paced town in Eastern Washington.

She pursued an interest in art in her studies at Columbia Basin Community College in Pasco and at Western Washington University in Bellingham.

She earned numerous awards for her graphic design work at the Sequim Gazette, where she worked for six years. She now creates art from the home she shares with her husband and daughter.

Melanie’s favorite art forms are drawing, painting and photography. Often a single painting will use all three of these talents — she will sketch from a photograph she has taken and then fill in the sketch with watercolor or tempera paints.

“Sequim Lavender Legacy”by James Lyman

“Sequim Lavender Legacy,” a painting by local artist James Lyman, was chosen as the official artwork for the 2012 Lavender Farm Faire.

The painting represents all of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association’s local, family-owned farms that have made Sequim famous over the past 16 years, says Faire Director Scott Nagel.

After a 23-year career in the Army and 20 years as chef and then owner of his own restaurant, James went back to school to become a pastor.

Throughout the past 30 years, he has had a passion for painting buildings, but is particularly recognized for his specialty in painting lighthouses and barns.

James has been commissioned to paint many churches, barns, Victorian homes and lighthouses all over the western United States. His work is available at www.fineartamerica.com.

SLGA prioritizes giving backrow

s of purple>> OVER THE YEARS, SLGA has coordinated fund raising efforts through the production of the Sequim Lavender Festival and under the auspices of its “Charity through Commerce” campaign to assist its neighbors, either by making monetary donations or contributing free space at the Festival’s Street Fair where their respective fundraising efforts can occur.

Many thousands of dollars have been distributed over the years.“We consider our neighbors as visitors, patrons and supporters of our lavender

harvest season,” says Festival Director Mary Jendrucko. “Every one of our growers realizes that giving back to the community is one of

our most important missions. Our Street Fair and free farm tour venues will pro-vide the platforms on which charities and visitors will get to know each other.”

In addition to the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, Mosaic (formerly SNAP, or Special Needs Advocacy Parents), the Sequim High School FFA and Se-quim Food Bank programs, the SLGA has adopted the Peninsula Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Lions Club Eye Bank program and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula as this year’s featured recipients of monetary and in-kind support.

“In this economic time, preparing for the effects of a natural disaster, protect-ing our youth and addressing deficiencies in eye health care are issues on which our association can have a meaningful and local impact,” Jendrucko says.

The Lions Eye Bank program was chosen because it is an integral part of ensuring that required eye tissue is provided for delicate and expensive eyesight restoration, especially to an aging population.

The SLGA, Jendrucko says, is proud to have been a continued supporter for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula which for a mere $30 per year, per child, provides after-school safety, security and academic support to hun-dreds of Sequim area children. No child is turned away from these community-provided services.

Puffin Sunset Marine Cruise Cruise leaves from John Wayne Marina, 2577

W. Sequim Bay Road, at 7 p.m. Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21.

Participants will cruise for two hours on the 55-passenger, 65-foot Glacier Spirit around Protec-tion Island for a narrated program on marine bird life and marine mammals found between the marina and Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Expect to see tufted puffins, rhinoceros auklets and other sea birds.

Included in the cruise is a dinner featuring fresh baked Pane d’Amore bread, dill and garlic salmon, Capt. Pete’s party potatoes, Northwest Caesar salad and chocolate-drizzled fresh raspberry brownies.

There are more than 100 varieties of lavender growing in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.

The drought-tolerant plant likes a good-draining soil that keeps it from getting its feet wet (in other words, you should never over water it!).

Because it has so many uses, lavender has been referred to as “the Swiss army knife” of herbs. Here are a few of the plant’s many uses:

A HEALING HERB: Lavender has been used for centuries as a medicine to prevent infections in wounds, it soothes as a tea, and heals in creams and oils.

CRAFTY LITTLE FLOWER: Lavender can be made into a wand, sachet or wreath for a fragrant, cherished keepsake.

CULINARY MAGIC: For centuries great chefs have used lavender as an ingredient in cooking. The French use it in breads, desserts and marinades. It is also an integral ingredient of the classic French seasoning, Herbs de Provence, which is a blending of various Mediterranean herbs.
