Reduce Reuse and Recycle

At St Lawrence we embrace the three Rs Reduce Reuse and RecycleThis allows us to reduce the amount of stuff going into landfills thus reducing uneccessary emissions

Recycling Recycling bins are located throughout campus All of the recycling bins are considered comingled (or single stream)- this means no sorting is required Please rinse out your recyclables out before placing them into the bins

Electronics Used electronic equipment often contains heavy meatals which must be properly disposed Guidance and procedures are available on the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) webpage

Rechargeable Batteries Rechargeable batteries legally must be recycled in New York Recycling locations guidance and procedures are available on the EHS webpage

Composting Composting is available on the first floor of the student center and upon request at your residence The finished product is used by the Sustainability Program

Reuse Year round you can visit the student run Barn Good Thrift Store to purchase gently used (and very affordable) cloth ing dorm items and SLU swag Every spring unwanted items are collected at each residenceThe items are offered for sale to our students every fallThis program keeps trash out of the landfill while allowing you to responsibly and affordably furnish your room

Shorter Showers Nearly 75 of all water use can be traced back to the bathroom Did you know if you shorten your shower by just 2 minutes you can save more than 5 gallons of water

Turn it off You can help to conserve water by turning the tap off when brushing your teeth shaving or doing the dishes

Only water down the drain Only pour water down the drain By keeping drains clean you are helping to reduce pollution Never pour chemicals medications fats oils greases or other trash down the drain

Report Leaks Leaks happen When you spot a leak no matter how big or small please send Facilites Operations a work order A leaky faucet that drips one drip per second can waste more than 3000 gallons of water a year

Laundry Basics One load at a time

Donrsquot overstuff the machines Washing one load of laun dry at capacity uses less water and energy than loads at a medium or low setting and it dries faster Also dont just wash one or two items as this wastes water and causes oversudsing

Save your Soap All residences have high efficency washers which require very little detergent (2 tablespoons per load) to get your clothes clean Too much soap can actually ruin your clothes Please only use high efficency detergents

Cold Water Washing By washing your laundry using the the cold water cycle you can save a lot of energy plus it keeps colors from running Did you know that up to 90 of the energy used by the washer is to heat the water

Lose the Lint Cleaning the lint screen on the dryer helps to maximize air flow This allows your clothes to dry faster and with less energy

Dry it out When yoursquore finished using the washers leave the doors open This not only lets the drum dry faster but also letrsquos the next person see that a washer is open

Report Problems Please download and use the CSC ServiceWorks Ser vice App to report an issue from your smartphone In the event you cannot access the app please contact the warehouse at 315-229-5905

You can check out a bike helmet and lock from the Green Bikes Program at the Science Library

We have 2 electric vehicle charging stations on campus

Unnecessary vehicle idling wastes fuel money causes air pollution and contributes to unecessary emissions

St Lawerence students have the option to use either the transportation program or the vacation bus service These programs allow you to share the ride with friends while reducing air pollution when you leave campus for breaks

By walking ridingor skating around campus yoursquore helping both yourself and the environment get healthier Vehicle emissions cause air pollution and contribute to climate change

Energy Using energy wisely allows us to reduce our carbon emissions and get closer to our goal of carbon neutrality by 2040

Unplug Devices All electronic devices use electricty when they are plugged in even when they are off This is known as phantom or vampire load Portable electronic devices chargers TVs DVDs speakers printers and gaming systems are all culprits of phantom load

LED Lighting LED lights provide the same amount and quality of light as traditional light bulbs and CFLs But LEDs use 75 less en ergy and last up to 10 times longer

Room Comfort Use blinds or shades to help adjust your room temperature Sunlight can warm up a room by several degrees

Enable Power-Saving Modes All computers have settings to automatically save energy

Skip the screen saver Screen savers do not save energy they waste it Use 70 less energy by setting the screen to sleep after 20 minutes

Turn it off Follow the 220 rule if you will not use your computer for more than 2 hours turn it off If you will not look at a screen for more than 20 minutes turn it off

Smart Power Smart surge protectors also know as adavanced power strips automatically prevent phantom load and can help to reduce your carbon footprint
