was born on March 25, 1961. A graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1981) and the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs (1983), he

gained a master’s degree in Aesthetics in 1984. After years of painting self portraits from every perspective, he found his niche

painting large representations of his face. Although he continually paints the same face, the outcome is always unique. He experi-

ments with brush stroke, texture, palette and attention to details. At times, his compositions appear to be completely abstract,

but upon further examination, a face always emerges. Although known for his self portraits, Dauptain is very successful with other

genres. His landscapes and cityscapes are reminiscent of Hopper, yet Dauptain takes greater liberties with brush stroke to infuse

a sense of movement in the painting that can be linked to impressionism.

Since 1981, Dauptain has exhibited constantly and received numerous awards for his work, the most recent of which include the Grand

Prix of the Salon des Peintres de l’Armée (2003), the Taylor Prize (2001), and the gold medal of the Salon des Artistes Français (1997).

The distinctiveness of my approach is rooted in the fact that portraiture has always been my preferred genre.

For practical reasons and for self-liberation, I was inspired to paint my own portrait most fre-quently. Therein results a series of more than two thousand self-portraits drawn or painted over the course of twenty-five years. This substantial quantity of work sparks my curiosity instead of satisfying it and I have never ceased searching for what the next version will re-semble. At the same time, this subject annuls itself by force of repetition. It is a pretext for continuously searching for new solutions, as much from the point of view of formal beauty as technical. Finally, it is the painting itself that is at the heart of my work.

I also paint still lives and landscapes; these play a role of “respiration” between two por-traits. For me, they are an opportunity to search for the evocation of profoundness while I wish that my faces “come forth.”

I devote myself to views of the coast and countryside as much as to more typical represen-tations of towns, factories, roads, automobiles – scenes that constitute our daily environ-ment, but still appear to me as a “field” to be discovered for the painters of today.
