RE: Request to Appoint Laurence Shaffer as City Manager Effective June 1,

2011

The City of Jackson has engaged in a comprehensive search for the position of City

Manager. Mr. Laurence Shaffer has been recommended to serve as the new City

Manager for the City of Jackson, MI effective June 1, 2011. He has passed his pre-

employment physical exam and background check. It is proposed that the City of

Jackson pay Mr. Laurence Shaffer an annual base salary of $115,000, which is

commensurate with market rates. Other terms and conditions of his employment are

outlined in the attached agreement.

Requested action is for City Council to:

1. Approve the appointment of Laurence Shaffer as the new City Manager,

effective June 1, 2011 at an annual base salary of $115,000.

2. Request that the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to sign the attached

employment agreement.

Please place this item on the May 10, 2011 City Council agenda for consideration.
