AVOID THE RIOTS“Kenji!”  I  heard

somebody  holler  from  behind  me,  “Kenji,  wait!”   I  twisted  my  head  around,  scanning  the  contents  of  the  massive  hotel  ballroom  for  the  source  of  the  voice.     A  shiver  trailed  down  my  spine  as  I  felt  a  freezing  hand  grab  onto  my  shoulder,  making  me  jump  ever  so  slightly.  I  turned  quickly  to  face  the  un-‐known  caller,  Dinding  out  that  it  was  actually  just  one  of  the  staff  members.

“Kenji,  I  Dinally  caught  up  with  you!”  the  worker  panted,  “I  was  told  to  inform  you  that,  you  and  a  few  other  staff  members  have  been  chosen  to  go  out  and  fetch  some  rations  from  the  food  warehouse.  We’re  almost  out  of  food!”   “Alright,  then.  When  do  we  leave?”  I  questioned.   “Right  now!  It’s  almost  Friday  prayer  time,  so  most  of  the  rioters  are  going  off  to  pray.  The  roads

will  be  clear  and  easy  for  you  to  drive  to  the  warehouse  and  back  without  getting  stopped.  We’re  also  using  this  time  to  ship  off  some  of  the  expats  to  the  airport,”  the  worker  blabbered.   “Okay,  I’ll  start  heading  outside,”  I  assured  him.   “Great,  bye,  Kenji!”  he  smiled  and  just  like  that,  he  was  gone.

AVOID THE RIOTS   I  rufDled  my  short,  black  hair,  already  starting  to  stress  out  about  this  chore.  Worried  that  a  group  of  armed  or  semi-‐armed  people  might  harass  us,  pull  us  out  of  our  vehicle  and  beat  us  up  like  they  did  with  other  people  around  the  city.     I  picked  my  way  through  the  ocean  of  whining  and  moaning  guests,  all  wanting  to  escape  from  this  massive  nightmare,

towards  my  wife,  Helena.     “Helena,  I’m  gonna  leave  for  a  while,  okay?”  I  spoke  up  when  I  reached  her,  “I’ve  been  chosen  to  go  collect  some  food,  but  I’ll  be  back  soon,  though.”

“Whatever,”  she  muttered.

I  knew  that  Helena  was  sick,  just  wanting  to  rest  because  when  I  called  her  yesterday  to  come  and  stay  at  the  hotel,  she  was  sleeping.  The  city  was  un-‐safe  now  and  couldn’t  risk

letting  her  get  hurt.  She  placed  a  gentle  hand  on  our  dog,  Abiel,  and  rested  her  head  on  the  wall.

Giving  a  quick  nod,  I  rushed  out  of  the  hotel  located  in  Region  Jakarta.  The  Dirst  thing  I  settled  my  eyes  on  was  a  giant  military  truck.  A  man  in  a  black  suit  was  barking  orders  for  everyone  who  was  going  to  get  in  the  mobile  right  away.

AVOID THE RIOTSI  approached

the  enormous  vehicle  and  heaved  my  37-‐year-‐old  body  into  it.

The  worker  was  right,  the  roads  were  clear.  Not  a  single  person  was  to  be  seen.  I  checked  my  watch,  wondering  what  time  it  was.

11:29…  We  have  about  one  hour  until  Friday  Prayer  is  over.

We  raced  across  the  road,  our  only  goal  was  to  get  the  food  and  arrive  back  at  the  hotel  before  Friday  Prayer  Dinishes.

Before  I  even  knew  it,  we  were  at  the  warehouse.  I  spotted  three  servants  guarding  the  storage,  their  bodies  drenched  in  sweat.“We  have  come  to  collect  some  food  to  feed  the  guests  at  the  hotel,”  one  of  my  business  partners  announced.

The  third  servant  nodded,  un-‐locking  the  door,  allowing  us  to  grab  the  contents  of  the  safe.  We  mostly  took  frozen  goods,  as  they  would  last

longer,  things  like  vegetables,  Dish,  and  potatoes.  We  recorded  all  the  items  we  received  and  secured  the  groceries  in  the  trunk.

I  checked  my  watch  again,  reading  off  of  it  that  it  was  now  12:10.

Time  to  go…We  all  piled

back  into  the  truck,  starting  the  engine,  and  making  our  way  back.

AVOID THE RIOTSLater,  we  had

been  able  to  arrive  back  to  the  hotel  safely  and  punctual,  also  just  before  Friday  Prayer  ended.

INTERVIEW Q&ABackground Information:

Doing marketing event for certain

leaders of industry to come

and eat in the kitchen for lunch. Were preparing the even when

one person showed up. One of the assistant

food and beverage

directors came told me to call

Helena. He wanted me to ask

if she was all right because it was getting very violent outside.

Groups of armed and semi-armed

people were

marching around towards the

wealthier parts of town burning cars, setting

places on fire. Pulling people out

of cars and beating them up. They would do this to anyone

who was Chinese looking. Couldn’t call home on land

line, but my mobile phone

was able to reach Helena, she was sleeping at the time. She was a bit sick, but it

was quite around her area.

REFLECTION1. How has working on this project helped you learn about your family’s history and given you a better sense of your identity?

I think it helped me learn more about myself and where I came from, I learned more about what happened in my relative’s lives, I found out that if one slip up had been made I could’ve not even been here.

2.Why do you think doing a project like this is important?

So, one day you can tell your grandchildren/children about these stories and as well to learn more about your identity and where you came from.

3.What part of this project did you enjoy the most? Why?

Probably the writing part because that’s the part where I can let all my creative imagination mix with the information I received to make a great narrative, writing is always my favourite part. I also think the writing part is where you finally get a chance to make the story come alive!

REFLECTION4. What specific challenges did you face during

this project and how did you over come them?

I originally was doing a different topic, but then I was not able to contact my Grandmother (Dad’s side), so I had to change my story topic to a story from my dad.

5. What advice would you give future students as they begin this project?

Do not procrastinate to writing you story to the very last moment otherwise you will not get a good grade and your story will not be the best quality! Make sure to get all the information you need and to get pictures as well.
