Travel the National Road to experience a piece of America’s past. The 90-mile route cuts through the southwest corner of
Pennsylvania and gives travelers a glimpse of the revolutionary events that took place along its corridor. Stop by a historic tollhouse to learn about travel in the mid-1800s; discover key French and Indian War events at Fort Necessity National Battlefi eld, Braddock’s Grave and Jumonville Glen; and sit back as you take in some of the nation’s most beautiful countryside. Every spring, the National Road Festival celebrates the fi rst federally funded highway. Don’t miss this fun event that features encampments, arts and crafts, food, historic tours and a period wagon train that travels the historic road.
The Lincoln Highway is the nation’s fi rst coast-to-coast highway, and it passes right through the Laurel Highlands! There are many quirky
stops, interesting works of art and historic places that dot its roadside. Enjoy the “Main Street Across America” that showcases quaint small towns, shopping, entertainment, dining and more. Your fi rst stop on Route 30 should be the Lincoln Highway Experience, a museum of the historic road that tells the cross-country transportation story, shares exhibits with cool artifacts, highlights the kitschy “Roadside Giants,” murals and more. The stops along the highway are neat, but in this case the route itself is the ultimate destination. Enjoy the ride!
From rolling hillsides to rushing waterfalls and picturesque farmlands to architectural wonders, the Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway has
it all. Take your time along this byway, with some of the best biking and hiking trails along the way. Stroll through the charming town of Ligonier. Explore the many waterfalls and trails in Ohiopyle State Park. Stop at one of the most well-known attractions in the world, Fallingwater®, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece cantilevered over a waterfall. The beauty of the journey along Route 40 makes this route a must.
