Made for the Agricultural College of Castelo Branco, this book repre-sents a tribute to the school garden and his producer, a man called An-tónio Ramos. Designing this book, the goal was to emphasize all the beautiful sculpters made with aromatic plants, wood and stones.The book as also some recipes of tradicional portuguese food made with the aromatic plants used in the garden.

Project made for Teatro Oficina, a teathre organization in Gui-marães. This project was made with the colaboration of Angela Santos and Mariana Santos.The goal was to make a book about the story of the theatre and also incorporate their en-tire plays. The book was written in two languages, portuguese and english, so that Guimarães visitors could find it attractive to purschase.The book was separeted in two parts. The fisrt one in white pa-per pages, where we displayed the teathre history and foto-graphs, and a second part, in blue paper pages for the written plays.The book came out with very different and appealing spreads, leaving the reader surprised and wanting to turn another and an-other page.

Book cover and some spreads design for “A livraria da Univer-sidade”, a photo album made by Paulo Mendes, a teacher and photographer at University of Coimbra. This book represents a compilation of Joanina’s Library macro and landscape photo-graphs.Because it was such an heavy book to handle and it had so many big pictures, i tryed to lighten up the cover, making it as clean as possible, using a sim-ple painting detail as the only image element in the cover.

This is the story of a dog named Brown. Under the proj-ect of Contexts and Practices of illustration we were asked to create a fiction story based in real life moments. The story I told was the story of my dog , named Brown, a mutt who was born alone, without brothers or sisters, that was raised by the other dog living in the farm: Lucky - a noble Cocker dog.Brown learns with him all the farm secrets. But unfor-tunately Lucky dies of old age and Brown stands alone once again, with no reason to stay. When the decision of departing comes, a new member arrives: a new puppy, named Mika, another Cocker dog. Brown immediately falls in love.But the love felt for the new puppy is unrequited and she sees him as just a friend. Mika ultimately creates family with another dog of the same breed and Brown, shat-tered and betrayed, is forced to leave the farm forever. Brown was never seen again, never stepped on the farm’s soil again.

Project done under the subject of Contexts and Practices of Illustration. The aim of this project was to make a tribute to someone in a publication. So, as inspiration, i hold on to John Paul Thurlow, an illustrator with a realistic style known to tam-per with a large number of magazine covers kno-wn world wide like Vogue, Decoy, The New Yorker, etc.

I recreated a portuguese magazine, Maxmen, whi-le reversed the stereotype of woman usualy seen in this kind of men’s magazine. I made 6 magazine spreads by copying the layout used in one of its editions and also modified the linguistic content. Here I show some of the illustrations created for this work, which also included pages for adverti-sing and back cover.

Illustrated childrens book done for the final project of the first year of masters degree.To alert the society of today’s world about the animal life ri-ghts, I built an illustrated col-lection of the animal rights. This collection consisted in two books: a book designed specifi-cally for a child’s universe, and one for an adult audience. With this division of the illustrations I intended to get more assertive public.Illustrating and designing both books had to be careful to drive a kind of illustration more color-ful and fun for children and, in the case of the book for adults, I’ve chosen two color illustra-tions, more shocking, more dra-matic, to alert the adult popula-tion to the consequences of not following the animal rights.

Illustrated book for children pro-duced as a final project of MA in partnership with the National Park of Peneda Geres.The aim of this project was, abo-ve all, demonstrate how editorial design can enhance the illustrated stories.The narrative covers a topic of environmental impact - the fire, trying to make children aware of environmental issues related to animals and their habitat, based on the Peneda-Geres National Park.The final project involves the pre-sentation of two design proposals: a notebook and an harmonium book. Both proposals apply con-cepts of the unconventional illus-trated books, with two solutions for the graphic production. The first book enhances the use of di-fferent support materials and cut-ting, highlighting the destructive power of fire.In the harmonium book is the vi-sual linearity that highlights the contrast between two different spaces of the narrative, before and during the fire, allowing its rea-ding on both sides.

Illustrations made for the children book “Mimão and the carrot cake” that takes part in the book collection of Joana Poças, “As delícias do Mimão”. The collection tell us a story about a little bunny called Mimão, who lives in the Cuddle Forest. Mimão has all sorts of aventures with his friends and he’s always discovering new things to play with.

Illustration created for the International Year of Planet Earth. Project developed in 2008 in partnership with the Vista Alegre - portuguese ceramics company.The illustration was part of the new ceramic artefacts in order to alert the consumers to the sustainability of their cultural and natural he-ritage.The intention, illustrating this set of cups, was to revitalize and enhance the tradition of buil-ding “moliceiros” (a type of boat built in the city of Aveiro) and technical drawings that ac-company this construction.This work was performed during the second year undergraduate at the University of Aveiro.

Illustrations developed for a set of objects crea-ted for the company Do - do it yourself.Single objects, imagined to be finished by the user. The company provides the material, and illustrated instructions so that, being necessary harmony between the user, the idea and ins-tructions, is the user himself that finishes the final object.In the side image, the interior of a house was illustrated, in which each division is planned for a cube. It’s up to the user to build their home, tidy it and paint it however he wants.

Personal project consisting on a set of illustrations for t-shirts.The illustrations are based on a series of characters with different moods to suit different occasions and personalities of the consumers.Some of the graphics were made specifically for the Eleven Miles Apart rock band. They can be purchased per order or if the buyer has a specific idea of what he wants, he can also order it.

Mascot proposal for the illustration contest of Bertrand bookstores “Readers of all sizes.”The illustrations shown were part of the 20 finalists group, with which was performed an itinerant exhibi-tion in the Bertrand bookstores in Lisbon, Viseu, Por-to, Aveiro and Portimão from 31 May to 8 July 2012.

Set of three typographic compositions where the goal was to use cha-racters as an image in a square of 30x30 cm, using only a linear font in the first composition, a counterstained font in the other, and finaly a composition between the two. This work was performed in Studies of Typography.

Creation of two fonts based in pixels. The aim of this work would be to create a simple and a com-plex font, always starting from the first creation.

Font designed within the course of Advanced Studies in Typography. In this project, guided by professor Mario Moura, we were expected to produce a font that was a colla-boration of four colegues. In this case, the font came from the de-construction of a polyhedron, and each polyhedron’s face was drawn by each element group. The final result was a mono-spaced font, where the edges have different thicknesses, providing evidence of the cooperation of the various elements of the group.

Corporate image for a company of audiovisual, multimedia and docu-ment management. In this project the client required something to dis-tinguish it from other competitors, starting with their business card as a trademark.

Old Vineyard wine brand made for a competition organized by the com-pany HMConsultores. It was intended that the wine was selled for a younger audience and, at the same time, revealed the weight of a quality, an appealing and light image. With these objectives in mind I created an identity based on two fundamental concepts:Elegance: in form, atitute, lines, colors, typography and longitudinal as-pect, so as to arouse a desire to purchase and acquisition.Modernity: without neglecting the age worthy wine business, I propose a solution that can do justice to both aspects.

Alfonso Barreiro & Melo is consultancy and project evaluation society with international business. Its business area and its recent investment worldwide implied sophistication and seriousness. So, their identity is based on a very sober typestyle and its application in silver and gold in the cards exemplifies its business volume.
