The Roads Task Force was set up by the Mayor of London to tackle challenges facing London’s streets and roads due to major population growth. In January 2014 the London Plan was amended to prioritize implementation of the Roads Task Force (RTF) Report. The report contains a Street Types framework for classifying routes according to their place and movement function. It is therefore an essential tool for managing and maintaining streets, roads and adjacent public space. I was hired by TfL on a consultancy basis to help implement and champion the RTF. I organise and run workshops in every London borough for Councils to classify and map their public realm using the Street Types framework.

Street Types workshops are a collaboration between London’s boroughs and TfL. The place attraction of streets is mapped alongside the movement network to determine the Street Type. In a second workshop we de!ne aspirations for the public realm and analyse the impact of planned future developments on streets and public spaces. Through this work I engage with regeneration specialists, planners and highway engineers to identify ways to maintain and improve London’s streets.

In addition to the workshops I am currently producing a ‘Guide to Street Types’ which will be used by TfL to market the concept and workshop methodology to other cities. This work will include a public exhibition to promote TfL’s work on Street Types.

Make Manchester implants construction and crafting skills amongst the local population, empowering them to reclaim the network of stalled and super#uous spaces throughout the city. Education spaces and workshops enable users learn craft skills ranging from model-making to building construction. A sensory learning experience educates visitors about materiality and architecture. Eventually, users would regenerate a stalled concrete frame at the site. An on-site paper recycling mill collects and uses waste paper from nearby o$ces to provide raw materials for these activities.

The scheme reconnects Castle!elds to the rest of Manchester via new transport links including a disused viaduct re-appropriated as a pedestrian walkway. Along this, intermittent parkletts provide enjoyable yet adaptable outdoor amenity space.

The design was developed through modelled investigations into massing and integration into the existing public realm. Models were used to re!ne the form, explore materiality and scale, and understand internal lighting conditions.

The articulation of the facade opens a dialogue between the interior and exterior whilst passively controlling environments within the building.

The scheme harnesses the thermal power of Manchester’s canal network and an unexploited rainwater harvesting system to service the programme.

All mod cons was a workshop led by myself and three other MArch students for MA Architecture students. The exercise sought to use the notion of the machine in order to rethink the traditional spaces of the home. There was a focus on the phenomenological aspect of mechanical devices to approach the individual’s interface with the machine. Students were tasked with integrating a series of mechanisms into an architectural scheme and producing a scale model of their design.
