  • Launching Ramps For Trailerable Yachts Around Victoria

T his booklet has been prepared by Sonata Yacht Association of Victoria (SYAV) from work as a member of the Yachting Victoria (YV) Trailerable Yacht Division (TYD) Infrastructure Committee to provide a compact reference for Sonata Association members.

Perceived Necessary Requirements of Boat Ramps and Associated facilities:

    • Concrete ramp allowing two or more concurrent launch and retrievals. • Suitable depth of water in all tide conditions. • Allows “mast-up” launch and retrieval. • The alternative of mast-down launch and retrieval can be dangerous if

weather conditions become bad. • Adequate shelter from prevailing winds and sea. • Wharfs or floating pontoons to tie-up to after launching and before retrieval. • Car park for secure parking of trailers and towing vehicle. Further options also considered of importance. • Availability of toilet facilities. • Proximity of shops. • Availability of fuel.

Members are also recommended to go to the following website for details about many Victorian and Interstate launch ramps. www.baum.com.au/ramps - the Boat Ramps Notepad Google Earth also can provide close-up views and maps to all ramps.

Shire. It comprises a three lane concrete launching ramp with a tie-up jetty and a large parking area. There is a marked channel from the jetty to the Bay. Provides access to the waters of Capel Sound at Rye, East towards Rosebud and West to Blairgowrie and Sorrento. It is particularly suitable as a base for bottom-of-the-Bay cruising. Capel Sound provides the best sailing/racing water at the Southern end of the Bay. Very busy in Spring/Summer and Autumn. Recovery delays of up to 2 hours common in Summer.

    • The jetty posts have rubber buffers. • No overnight mooring. • Nearby Rye Pier also provides some tie-up

    option, including limited overnight mooring.

    Page 19 August 2008

Description & Recommendation: This facility is the second largest on the Mornington Peninsula. Facility comprises a triple concrete launching ramp with restricted time tie-up jetty, protected by two rock groins and extensive vehicle/trailer parking. Provides access to water East to Blairgowrie, West to the Heads and Queenscliff.

It is particularly suitable as a base for bottom-of-the-Bay cruising. Sailing in the immediate area of Sorrento is a little restricted owing to the “Great Sands” north towards the main shipping channel (very shallow), ferry traffic to Queenscliff, and strong tides towards the Heads. There is however good cruising in the areas east and west of Sorrento.

    (Continued on page 20)

    • Water depth at very low tide may be challenging, otherwise very satisfactory.

    • From the entrance through the rigging areas to the launch area and back to the parking area is one-way traffic.

    • Suitable for mast-up launch and retrieval. • Rigging Area: Large rigging/parking area

available (room for about 50 boats at a time). • Car and Trailer Parking: Large vehicle/trailer

parking area - about 130 spaces. • Toilet Facilities: Picnic and toilet facilities

available. • Shops & Fuel: Shops and service stations with

500 metres of parking/launch area. • Fees: $11 daily; $110 annually. Ticket machine.

(See Note 1) • Access: Along Pt Nepean Rd through Rye

township. After traffic lights at end of town (Dundas St), about 200 metres to the entrance to the ramp area.

    PP 25. Sorrento

Location: St Aubins Way, Melways 157 B6

GPS Waypoint: S 38°20.088' E144°44.369' Approximately 1 km through Sorrento on the Portsea road in St Aubin Way.

season. • Fees: $11 daily; $110 annually. Ticket machine.

(See Note 1) • Access: On Pt Nepean Rd through Rye and

Sorrento, onto the Portsea Rd. Turn right into ramp area about 2 Km from centre of Sorrento. One-way through traffic in the rigging/launch area.

Tyrone. (Not Recommended) Melways: 167 K2

This is a small ramp unsuited to trailerable yachts. It only used by small power boats. There is no rigging area, and parking is only on Pt Nepean Rd.

    • The jetty posts have rubber buffers. • Water depth at all times is adequate. • Reasonably well protected from strong

Northerly, North-Westerly and Westerly winds, but exposed to strong Easterly winds.

    • Strict 15 minute time limit now in force at the two jetties.

    • Nearby Sorrento pier offers little tie-up access. Seaward side is for commercial vessels only.

    • Suitable for mast-up launch and retrieval. • Rigging Area: Immediately adjacent the

ramps. Sufficient space for about three boats at a time.

    • Car and Trailer Parking: Area on same level as ramp with capacity for about 50 vehicles and trailers. On the hill above the ramp are two vehicle/trailer parks with capacity for another 50 units.

    • Toilet Facilities: No toilet facilities in immediate area.

    • Shops & Fuel: At least 1 Km from shops. ∗ There are no fuel

suppliers in the Sorrento/Portsea area. Nearest is Blairgowrie.

∗ The area is very busy in the Summer holiday
