Saludos Floridians....It took me a little while to write this “Letter from la Editora” because every time I sat down to write it, I would start remembering and reminiscing on 13 years’ worth of memories…. 13 years of meeting great people, 13 years of closing great deals, taking some nose dives, 13 years of helping companies achieve success and 13 years of publications. I was at a loss on how best to say THANK YOU to GOD for making so many of my dreams come true, how incredible is this feeling of reaching this goal…the gratitude inside was enough to make me want to cry!

Latin Times Magazine is celebrating another birthday -13 Years ago, we published the very first issue – originally called C.L.U.B., City of Latin Urban Beats, which later changed to Latin Times Magazine and who would have thought all those years ago, that so many years later, that little publication would still exist? I have learned a lot throughout the last 13 years of publishing and of being in business, and I have had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people along the way.

I love being a business woman, I believe it’s what God created me to be, and I believe he has blessed me with many wonderful business opportunities in order to give Latin Times Media a strong national voice. As an entrepreneur in today’s business world,

I can tell you that business today is different than when I first started on my professional journey, today there are lots of new players, lots of new rules and lots of new opportunities. As an entrepreneur you have to be prepared to adapt and excel at these new opportunities and change your game plan along the way.

Today’s entrepreneur has to wear so many hats, and each of those hats has to “fit” you. It’s tough, I am not going to say it’s not tough, however if you have a dream –you should pursue it. For those of you in the midst of a struggle, let me just say you are on a journey, and you may be closer to reaching your destination than you think, so don’t stop now…. and don’t slow down. Pray for strength, be strong, have courage and if you are afraid don’t let that stop you. The most important piece of advice is to believe in yourself and in your dream, even in the face of impossibilities, have faith that God will see you safely to your destination and that only he knows the best way to get you there.

Do you have a dream? Tell me about it –email me at: [email protected]

Latin Times: What made you decide to run for the Tampa City Council position? Guido: I have chosen to run for Tampa City Council District 6, because I want to make sure we pass on the promise of a better future to the generations that follow us. My focus will be on creating jobs, strong leadership and continued preservation of our beautiful community and historic neighborhoods that bring such rich heritage to our multi-faceted community, our home, Tampa.

Latin Times: Why do you feel you would make a good Tampa City Council person? Guido: For several years I have immersed myself in community

involvement. I currently serve as a member of the City of Tampa Code Enforcement board, current president of the MacFarlane Park Neighborhood Association, member of the Hillsborough County Human Rights Council, trustee chairman for the Sons of Italy Lodge, treasurer for the Ybor City Lions Club, member of the West Tampa Optimists Club, and member of the Ybor City Round Table. Our neighborhoods are the building blocks of our community. As a neighborhood president and small business owner, I understand the needs our community and am ready to represent the people and give them a voice in city hall.

Latin Times: What made you decide to run for the Tampa City Council position? Jackie Toledo: My parents instilled in me the value and importance of contributing to your community. For almost 25 years I have called Tampa my home. As a Civil Engineer, small business owner and mother of 5, the future of Tampa is so important and dear to me.

Tampa is entering a critical time in which the needs of a growing economy will place stress on current infrastructure and regional resources. Almost 80% of all issues before the city council revolve around land use and transportation- issues perfectly suited for a civil engineer.

Being the owner of a small business, I know our business owner’s need more support in order to keep creating jobs. Recruiting, retaining and fostering business growth is good for our city and a small business owner is perfectly suited to help Tampa’s economy.

As a mother of 5, I know how to manage personalities, schedules and keep everything on track. But more than that, my kids, like your own, are our future. They need us to prepare Tampa

for tomorrow. That means finding cost effective solutions to resolve gaps in transportation and infrastructure and re-investing in economic engines like our airport and seaport. It means looking at our aging utility system and making much needed updates. We cannot afford to kick the can down the road, it’s time to come together and get things done.

Latin Times: If you win, what are some of your plans on how you can help Tampa’s Hispanic communities? Jackie Toledo: Helping the entire city will help the Hispanic community. But, specifically our community has very specific needs. We need to focus on education and re-education. We need re-investment in our neighborhoods. As a member of the Mayors Hispanic Advisory Council I have already advocated for our community and will continue to do so. Latin Times: Why do you feel you would make a good Tampa City Council person? Jackie Toledo: I will use my specialized skill set as a civil engineer, business woman & mother to answer our cities’ growth. The growth is here, we can’t stop growth nor should we, but we must respond to growth rather than stifle it. My experiences give me the background, foundation and values to be a good member of Tampa’s City Council and their best advocate.

Latin Times: What is your Favorite Cuban Sandwich? Jackie Toledo: I can’t pick a favorite since I LOVE all Tampa Cuban sandwiches. I’m getting hungry just thinking about them. Can’t wait till next year’s the Cuban Sandwich Festival.

What is your name? Thomas “Tommy” Castellano What Pais are you from? U.S. What is your hometown? Tampa

Latin Times: What made you decide to run for the Tampa City Council position? Tommy Castellano: If you have lived in Tampa for more than a day, you know the greatness that exists within this amazing city. It is where my family began their immigrant journey in America. It is where I raised my children. It is where I built my business. We have seen her ups and downs and I know the potential she keeps in her core. I deeply understand the greatness of our city. I know every government can always be improved in the service of the city and all its constituents. This is why I have chosen to serve this city and her citizens by running for City Council in district 6.

Latin Times: If you win, what are some of your plans on how you can help Tampa’s Hispanic communities? Tommy Castellano: We cannot talk about Tampa without talking about the relationships with Hispanic America. From the

Rough Riders heading to Cuba to fight the Spanish American War to Ybor as the Nations cigar city. We cannot allow for that history to disappear or even fade. We must enhance it. Make it a cornerstone of the growth of the city along with the Italian, African-American and present cultures.

I envision a Tampa with a bustling Hispanic community, a thriving economic core and an attitude that serves as a magnet for new businesses and the high paying jobs they attract. I see a government that responds to all its citizen’s equally and effectively. I see a Tampa that puts logic and effectiveness above special interests. Most importantly, I see a Tampa that encourages the Hispanic people to help them succeed however they see fit.

Latin Times: Why do you feel you would make a good Tampa City Council person? Tommy Castellano: I was taught early in life that the difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do.

After 38 years of running a local air conditioning business and employing

hundreds of Tampa’s finest residents, I have a unique perspective on what the city does well but more importantly, I understand what it can do better. As President of the West Tampa Chamber of Commerce for two years, I recognize the challenges and risks that our City’s entrepreneurs face. I know that Tampa is run by great people at every level, but time and bureaucracy have too often obstructed growth. We can do better and with my real life experience dealing with the City, I know we can do better.

Latin Times: What is your favorite Cuban Sandwich? Tommy Castellano: What is my favorite Cuban Sandwich or which is my favorite Cuban Sandwich? You and I know that there are only a handful of places where you can get a true Cuban sandwich. As a lifelong resident of Tampa, I have eaten many sandwiches that are called Cuban Sandwiches.

My favorite Cuban sandwich is………………. I will reveal this only after I am elected.

Thomas “Tommy” Castellano Hola

Latin Times readers! For those that missed my first article last quarter, my name is Nancy Colon “Cigar Aficionada”. I want to thank Jolie and Victor for the opportunity to express my love and interest for cigars. As an avid cigar smoker, I am always looking for a different cigar or a new place of interest to smoke.

Unlike cigarettes, cigars have an array and unique theme about its smoke. From size, taste, leaves, fillers, flavor, cuts and strengths, they are all different and much more enjoyable. I have fun smoking and exploring new blends; my choices are Pinolero, Romeo and Juliet (Cuban), Arturo Fuentes, Oliva, San Lotano, and Blanco just to name a few.

Are you looking for a new place to enjoy your cigar? I would like to introduce a new quaint place where good conversation, listening to music or perhaps a movie (yes a movie!) happens most nights!

“Habana Cigar Factory” in Gulfport, where owners Morgan and Sabastian welcome everyone who wants to enjoy a smoke. They have a vast selection of your favorite high end cigars and Nicaraguan Blend as well as flavored cigars for those that are starters or simply want a sweet taste. Habana Cigar Factory sells a variety of exclusive Dominican House cigars offering Ligero Full Body, Habana Medium, Cameroon, Barber Poles and Connecticut. Both Morgan and Sabastian smoke their Dominican long fillers and offer to buy four and get one free on all their house blends. In addition to the cigars, they offer a variety of lighters, humidors, scented candles and sprays as well as Espresso and soft drinks.

So next time you are in the area or want to experience a new atmosphere for cigar smoking, check them out!

LOOKING FOR A GREAT BAND FOR YOUR NEXT EVENT? LATIN TIMES GOES ONE ON ONE WITH CONJUNTO SALSA SWING WHO PERFORMED LIVE AT THIS YEARS’ ANNUAL CUBAN SANDWICH FESTIVAL!

Latin Times: What brought the two of you together? EMPIRE (AL): Ali and I have known each other since 1998. We were the original young Latino barbers in west Tampa.

Latin Times: Explain what you mean by original Latino barbers in the west Tampa area EMPIRE (AL): Before Ali and I started working off Columbus Drive there really weren’t any young Latino barbers cutting hair doing the things we were doing, there weren’t many young barber in this area.

Latin Times: So you guys decided to put your talents together? EMPIRE (AL): Exactly!

We figured why not combine our talents and stop being limited by others which is where the idea for the logo came. I wanted something that would stand out and look like no other barber shop brand. I think we created that. Empire is a barber shop where mothers can bring heir children and feel comfortable. I feel as if Empire combines traditional barbering with a modern twist. We cater to everyone from children to seniors.

Latin Times: So you two have served this community for more than 16 years, how do you set yourselves apart from other local barber shops?

EMPIRE (AL): This area is now saturated with barber

shops, but I think our names and the way we take care of our customers will speak for itself. We are small now but there is no limit to how big we can grow. We both love what we do and we look forward to serving the west Tampa community for many years to come. The long standing reputation and experience with the community speaks for itself and will truly help grow our new business into an empire!

Latin Times: We wish you Al and Ali many years of success!

SURVIVAL:

BUSINESS EDITION PART I By Victor Padilla

One thing I have seen and learned over the years is that there are so many businesses that succeed and fail, with more that have failed than succeeded. Why? Well there are some key factors that cause one or another. Before opening a business there are many things you must consider and in this article I am going to share some very important points to help you understand how a business should survive. There are some questions you must ask yourself before you consider even opening a business….

Question: How good should my business products/services be?

Answer: It is a fact that if your product is of good quality you have a better chance that it will have a demand. Clients are always looking for something they can count on and quality is a great part of putting trust in your business. Clients will not mind paying a little extra if your product and/or service is worth it. Failure comes when your product is not what you portray it to be, this could bring your business to a complete stop. Clients want what they pay for because finances are tight and if what you are selling is not of good quality they will not return. Always make sure your product is worthy of your client’s expectation.

Name: Itamar J. MartinezWhat is your Profession? I’m an EntrepreneurYour Pais: Father Cuban/Mother PortugueseHometown: Artemisa Cuba and Leiria Portugal

Latin Times: Please tell us about your biggest obstacles, and how you have overcome them. Itamar Martinez: Fear of failure and the feeling of inferiority were my two biggest obstacles. Nobody in my family ever had a successful business. Their advice to me was, get a good/safe job that paid the bills. I listened to them for many years. My inferiority mindset of thoughts that I wasn’t good enough, educated enough or lucky enough to run a successful business, changed after I met many people that were successful running a business without a college degree or even a lot of money to start. They all had something in common, a big dream, a desire to be somebody, the desire to help many along the way, guts and the never-give-up attitude.

Latin Times: In addition to your business, you also dedicate a lot of time to the local Hispanic Community as a leader, tell us about your position with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay. Itamar Martinez: You, Jolie (Latin Times), got me involved in HCCTB, with the Chamber I saw a way to help other visionaries and go-getters like myself succeed in business.

Latin Times: Tell us about your recent trip to Venezuela. Itamar Martinez: That was a decision made, “in the heat of the moment”…On Feb 12 of this year, Venezuela started going thru tough times as you know. I’m a bit of an adrenaline seeker with a heart. Knowing this, my friend attorney Jose Toledo calls me Tuesday, Feb 18 and asked me if I wanted to go to Venezuela with him to take some articles of first necessity and see how we could help. Not thinking of the danger, I said yes and immediately we got the plane tickets same day for Sat the 22nd and back the 26th. We met with the students there and talked with the locals on their needs, and went to the middle of everything where the demonstrations were happening. We came back with a better idea of the needs there. As a result, we created an event to collect articles of first necessity organized by La Liga Latina. We had tremendous support from our community. We collected over 10 boxes full of goods that were sent to Venezuela to the hands of those in need.

Latin Times: Who is a hero/role model that you admire (Living or deceased) and why do you admire them? Itamar Martinez: My dad! He passed away in 2009 but I carry his legacy with me. Even when things weren’t going well, his words were: “Don’t give up. God will provide.” He left some big shoes to fill but my hope is that one day my kids can be as proud of me as I am of my dad!

Name: Carlos Jose PeraltaWhat is your Profession? Radio announcer, program director and tv host.Your Pais: Santa Clara, CubaHometown: Tampa

Latin Times: Please tell us about your biggest obstacles, and how you have overcome them. Carlos Jose Peralta: The biggest obstacle I encountered in my career was trying to convince advertisers and media owners about the potential of Hispanic Language Media. It was overcome when companies such as ZGS Broadcasting, Mega Communications, the Archilla Family and finally CBS Radio that decided to venture in Spanish Media, through them many advertisers discovered the Hispanic Market.

Latin Times: Tell us about some of the celebrities that you have met throughout your years in entertainment.

Carlos Jose Peralta: One of the most rewarding things of my profession has been to meet celebrities that I have always admired such as the departed Celia Cruz, Selena and others like Marc Anthony, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Willy Chirino, Victor Manuelle, Jose Jose, Cristian, Olga Tanon, Ednita Nazario, Rey Ruiz, Oscar de Leon, Raphael, Jose Luis Perales, Chayanne, Gloria Estefan, Thalia, Juan

Luis Guerra, and many more that I have the privilege of meeting over more than 30 years in radio.

Latin Times: What is next for you in your career? Carlos Jose Peralta: Next in my career is television. I am making the transition from radio to tv host thanks to the opportunity that MIRA TV is giving me by making me part of their morning show “Buenos Dias Latino.” I still love radio, so at the same time, I have an on line music station called “Ritmo Latino.”

Latin Times: Who is a hero/role model that you admire (Living or deceased) and why do you admire them? Carlos Jose Peralta: My heroes have been my parents. My mother has always being there guiding me through my career and life. She was a teacher by profession so she has never stopped teaching me how to become a better human being and professional. My father passed away but I never forgot the sacrifice he made bringing my family to this great country so we could achieve our goals and live in liberty. He always supported my career and gave up his profession as an accountant in Cuba in order to provide for us. The Lord Jesus Christ and my parents have always being my inner strength and everything I have accomplished I owe it to them.

When I permanently relocated to Florida from Philadelphia, my children were already in college or about to graduate. Even though I still traveled quite a bit with my job, I now had more free time to enjoy my new City and get to know the wonderful people who live here. This led to my excitement and increasing interest in wanting to serve the City of Gulfport. Accordingly, when the Ward III City Council seat was announced as open, I knew this is what I wanted to do. For me personally, it is a matter of connecting at all functional levels of what makes this city a great place to live. Latin Times: What do you enjoy most about you what you do? Yolanda Roman: During my campaign, the term “The Bridge Candidate” was coined. The reason being that in reaching out to residents and voters of Gulfport, I was able to connect with a tremendously diverse cross-section of the City. First and foremost, I enjoyed listening and talking to the young-old, singles-families, home owners-renters, residents-visitors, straight-LGBT, businesses…as

well as across socio-economic levels. This further strengthened my commitment to run for City Council. Understanding the impact and importance of all sorts of municipal decisions across the many residents of my City is a welcome challenge, a challenge that requires me to listen, learn and make well-informed decisions. This is what I do, what has fueled my past and current career. What makes me tick! Latin Times: Please tell us about your biggest obstacles, and how you have overcome them. Yolanda Roman: I look at obstacles as challenges and/or opportunities that need to be explored, that will need attention and action. For example, some may say that no experience in running an election is an obstacle. So what did I do? I conducted research on past and recent elections. I searched and found information on the make-up and structure of successful elections. It was important to reach out to many, many smart people with election, fundraising and advertising experience, and public speaking support. I developed a cross-functional Campaign Team…making sure that the member make-up represented all sorts of expertise. More importantly, I needed to reach out to residents and voters to truly understand what they look for in a candidate, what they expect the candidate to do if elected, etc. Understanding their issues, concerns and ideas for our city was critically important to me. You see, what is often seen as obstacle, can turn out to be a wonderful opportunity.

“Entrevista

EXCLUSIVA con Latin Times Magazine

In Miami!!

CARLOS VIVES

LATEEN KNOWSCOLLEGE- THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE REALLY UGLY..By: Alexandra Posada

Mami and Papi have helped to pack the car up to the brim; posters are visible from the car windows along with your mountain of shoes and the life size Orlando Bloom cut-out you’ve had since sixth grade. Mom is holding the tears back (at least trying) and Papi is reminding you to never leave your drink unattended (alcoholic or not!) Overall, they are prepping for their kid to take the next biggest step in their life. Believe me this is one of the proudest moments that they’ll ever experience. Now as for my experience, it was just Mami telling me these things AND some… and a little bit more. Mostly about birth control, watching my whereabouts at all times, and of course before we left the house my abuelita (Nani) gave me la bendición. Then we were off for South Florida.

If you are anything like me, you’ll have the worst picazon to get the heck out of there!! (Been there, done that!) The weeks before you’ll anxiously be in touch with your future peers and exchange pictures of what new items you’ve picked up for the dorm and have long text exchanges about how badly you can’t wait to get out of your parents’ house, and how much fun college is going to be! Before you know it, you’re moving in and there is this overly peppy (pill popping kind of excited) R.A (residential assistant aka- the biggest pain in your hall beside the drunkard three doors down.) In your face telling you that you need to get x, y, and z paperwork to housing within the hour, meanwhile they’re trying to be as nice as possible but it comes off as rather fake. Regardless, they will remain to be cute, but seriously annoying. Then once everything is settled in, Mr. Bloom has his designated corner

next to your poster of Frida Kahlo and The Great Gatsby. Those damn floral Christmas-ish lights are put up and the bed is made- it’s time for Mami and Papi to head out. Holy Crap.

This is where it gets real. I got really lucky that I was a member of a leadership program at my school that gave me an opportunity to network, it all began with a weekend in the woods, bonding over fun-ditory events, crappy bunk beds, and surprisingly good food. At the end of the weekend we were “initiated” into the group by candle lit chanting and eventually a pinning welcoming us into the group of campus wide leaders. Following this ceremony I remember thinking to myself “Okay cool, I know a few people now and we’re going to run this place, sweet!” This was before two things, classes and rowing practice at 4:30am.

As the following week eventually rolled around, so did classes and practice. Being a student-athlete is already trying, try being a student-athlete who is simultaneously a student-leader. There are a few who have managed to master it, clearly the force is with them and the Yoda train completely missed me. The first day I was actually so nervous that I was shaking, although I tried my very best to have a cool, calm and unfazed appearance; of which included sweaty running shorts, sneakers and a soaked old regatta t-shirt from high school. It was Monday at 9am and I was lined up to have my first college class, naturally it’s a composition class. As a seasoned professor Dr. Star Vanguri sat with us all around a conference style table and she told us to stand up and loosen up that she could “feel the tension in the room.” I remember thinking to myself “Is she joking, or is she serious?”

After an unnaturally laid back class- I - like

many of my peers, ran for Starbucks. Coming from a Catholic High School, anything laid back was nearly unheard of and I needed something familiar; so I turned to my iced chi tea latte with a pump of vanilla and cinnamon dolce. From that point I managed to text my roommate for refuge from the pain of solidarity. It was at this point that I learned one of the most valuable lessons- value “alone” time. Don’t be afraid to go to Starbucks alone, take a walk around campus alone (given that you feel safe doing so), or going to the farmers market just because you want to.

From this point, my first day was basically a wrap. In the following weeks I dealt with the strange feeling of living not just with someone else but with three other girls. All of who had different sleep schedules, different perspectives on what the definition of “naked” is, and the definition of a “clean kitchen space.” Let’s explore this a little deeper- let’s say you don’t have a problem with roaming out of your shower in just a towel right? Well not everyone comes from the same school of thought. They will make this known- eventually.

So let’s get to what I know you want to hear about, the party scene!!!!

What did winning this contest mean to you? It meant being part of history in the great city of Tampa. It also meant for a benchmark for us to be judged against those with generations of experience.

How long have you been making Cuban Sandwiches? About four years. We know some have been making Cuban sandwiches for 100 years but we have found a way to make it better. As much as we respect them, and we are just happy to be here.

What makes your Cuban sandwich so special? Love. We love making Cuban sandwiches. It’s completely engineered, from roasting the pork overnight, to the baker bringing us fresh bread daily, to the way we place the pickles and the way we make the cut. It’s consistently the best Cuban in Tampa, the state of Florida, and the USA. There is one more key ingredient that few businesses have, KARMA. We donate all unused ingredients in our Core business of soups to charity. As we sell a cup we track the sales and match those sales with donations. To date we have given over 39,000 cups of soup to local Tampa shelters via Tampa Bay Harvest. This is the best form of feel good, attention, publicity, and good will anyone can get. When you give you get so much more, this transcends the Best Cuban or the Best Soup (creative loafing 2013) it makes us just the best at being good citizens.

Do you think you have a chance at winning again next year? Absolutely. There is nothing like this from Tampa to Miami and all across the USA. But we haven’t decided if we are competing because we just feel like we have already won.

What did winning this contest mean to you?Winning this contest was amazing, it means all of the care and love we put into our sandwich is being recognized. Some people are all about the money, we are all about making people smile.

How long have you been making Cuban Sandwiches? We have been making Cuban Sandwiches for 4 years.

What makes your Cuban sandwich so special? For some people it is just a sandwich but not for us. We wanted to make sure we did it right. We researched every item we put on our sandwich from the bread to the special mustard that we have shipped in, it can only be purchased in one place in the world THAT is why our sandwich is so special.

Do you think you have a chance at winning again next year? We would hope we have a chance of winning but we have seen it in the past where a winner in the past believes they are entitled to the win, we are not like that we will go into this with the same fears, anticipation and excitement we do every year and hope our quality and love shows.

Regardless of how we finish next year we are proud of our accomplishments over the past 2 years. This year we placed in all 3 categories. And first with our fans (that is what is important) this is a first time for this contest. We do not take that lightly.

Dulce Café 1st Place Non-TraditionalWhat is your name? Diane Agudelo & Hector Vega Name of your Restaurant? Dulce Cafe Where is it located? 3310 W Kennedy Blvd Tampa, FL 33609 Do you have a website? www.dulcecafebakery.com

What did winning this contest mean to you? It was a big achievement because we are new to the restaurant industry and when coming in the competition and competing against well-established restaurants and experienced competitors, I doubted we could win.

How long have you been making Cuban Sandwiches? Not very long at all, just under a year we started in July 2013

What makes your Cuban sandwich so special? Our sandwich is very special because it is a pastry. Our “Puffy Cuban” has all of the deliciousness of a Cuban sandwich wrapped up in a flaky and light pastry. Our ingredients are high quality and we use our own in-house slow roasted pork.

Do you think you have a chance at winning again next year? Absolutely, I think that knowing what to expect we can even compete better on all other categories.

What did winning this contest mean to you? It has been one of the highlights of my career, I truly believe that having a great Cuban sandwich distinguishes you as a great Cuban Restaurant after 35 years and this award and all our loyal customers we can now confirm that. After all what’s a Cuban Restaurant without a Cuban sandwich.

How long have you been making Cuban Sandwiches? Since Pipo’s originated in 1979, and nothing really has changed since then maybe the quality of the meats and the bread has improved some. (At least I like to think so, after all it’s been 35 years) But we keep building it the same way.

What makes your Cuban sandwich so special? Besides using fresh bread baked daily, our Roast Pork is the best in Tampa Bay marinated 24 hours with our 13 spice “Mojo” than slow roasted for about 12 hours it melts in your mouth. I think these two ingredients are what sets us apart from the rest.

Do you think you have a chance at winning again next year? Next year my plan is to win in both categories traditional and non-traditional by improving on my ingredients and techniques. Can’t wait!!!!

ESPERANZA ROAD

WHICH DAY IS THE SABBATH - SATURDAY OR SUNDAY?

What, When and Why… Honor the Sabbath…

Which day is the Sabbath? Since most churches observe Sunday as their day of rest and worship, many people assume that Sunday is the Sabbath.

Since embracing what we believe to be our ancestral religious/spiritual and cultural background, that of our Sefardic Jewish ancestors who followed and continue to follow the true biblical Sabbath. The Sabbath is celebrated in most religions on Sundays, people go to church on Sundays, and prepare for the start of the week….. “Monday”., however the true Sabbath day is actually on Saturday, and to be precise the Sabbath or as it is called in Hebrew “Shabbat” starts on Friday at sun down.

(15) Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. (16) Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. (17) It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’”-Exodus 31:15-17

God commanded that the seventh day be observed as the Sabbath. A glance at almost any dictionary, encyclopedia or calendar will show you that Saturday is the seventh day of the week, while Sunday is the first day of the week. According to God›s calendar, the seventh day is—and always has been—the Sabbath day. Although man has modified calendars through the centuries, the seven-day weekly cycle has remained intact throughout history. The days of the week have always remained in their proper order, with Sunday as the first day of the week and Saturday as the seventh.

Time has not been lost in this regard, as some may think. “The oracles of God”—His divine words and instructions—were entrusted to the Jewish people (Romans: 3:1-2), and they have preserved the knowledge

of the seventh-day Sabbath faithfully since well before Christ’s time to this day. Jesus/Yeshua himself repeatedly confirmed that the day the Jews observed as the Sabbath. And since then the Jewish people, even scattered in many nations and in different sects, have all preserved the same day.

Moreover, the mainstream Christian churches, though rejecting the Sabbath, indirectly confirm when it is by maintaining their early tradition of worshipping on Sunday, which they acknowledge to be the first day of the week. Obviously that makes the previous day the seventh—the biblical Sabbath.

There is no biblical authorization for changing the Sabbath

So how did Sunday become the primary day of rest and worship for most churches? Although the concept of rest has largely disappeared today, most denominations continue to hold their worship services on Sunday, however if you search throughout the Bible, you will find no authority to alter the day of worship.

Change to Sunday was made after the New Testament was written

Initially Christianity was viewed as simply a sect of Judaism. However, after Jewish revolts in Judea in A.D. 67-70 and 132-135, Jewish religious practices—many of which continued in the early Church—came to be viewed with hostility throughout the Roman Empire. Many among the Church began to abandon these practices, including observance of the biblical Sabbath and festivals.

Observance of Sunday as the primary day of worship appears to have begun to solidify during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117-135), who harshly persecuted Jews throughout the Roman Empire. Hadrian specifically prohibited practices of Judaism, including observance of the seventh-day Sabbath.

These oppressive measures influenced many early Christians in Rome to abandon the seventh day and turn to Sunday, the day for honoring the sun god among the Romans and other peoples of the ancient world. When Christianity was declared the official religion of the Roman Empire in the fourth century, the process accelerated.

Constantine’s anti-Jewish prejudice

The Roman Emperor Constantine, although a worshipper of the sun, was the first emperor to profess belief in Christianity. But the “Christianity” Constantine endorsed was already considerably different from that practiced by Jesus and the apostles. The emperor accelerated the change by his own hatred of Jews and religious practices he considered Jewish.

For example, at the Council of Nicea (A.D. 325), church authorities essentially banned the biblical Passover observance. Endorsing this change, Constantine announced: “It appeared an unworthy thing that . . . we should follow the practice of the Jews, who have impiously defiled their hands with enormous sin, and are, therefore, deservedly afflicted with blindness of soul . . . Let us then have nothing in common with the detestable Jewish crowd” (Eusebius, Life of Constantine 3, chapter 18, quoted in Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, 1979, Vol. 1, pp. 524-525).

In a bid to unify his empire, he established the first laws making Sunday the official day of rest. His A.D. 321 law, for example, stated: “On the venerable Day of the Sun [Sunday] let the magistrates and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed.”

Within a few centuries observance of the biblical Sabbath was driven underground within the confines of the empire, and most who professed Christianity embraced Sunday. However, there is no biblical authority for changing the day of rest and worship from the seventh day to Sunday.

ESPERANZA ROAD

What, When and Why… Honor the Sabbath…

Genesis 5:22-24 “Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah at 300 years old and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.”

When God created the very first Human being, he actually walked with them in the garden. Adam and Eve had an intimate relationship with the creator. I ask people all the time..”How is your relationship with God?” The usual answer is ...” Good, I go to church, I talk to him once and a while.” But, in reality a lot of people don’t even know God, it is only in crisis that people want to know him and ask for his favor.

Mathew 7:21-23 says not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and done many wonders in your name?” And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.” I remember when I first read that scripture I was Gung-ho for the Lord ready to conquer the world, the Holy Spirit revealed to me back then something very essential, it is not what we do for God, it is knowing when to do it. That means first and foremost we must have

a very deep and profound relationship with the heavenly father and through this deep relationship we move through faith and through faith we act in obedience. There is a scripture that says…”Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

Walking with God is not walking in front of him nor behind him, it means walking along side with him, talking to him, listening to him. Going to church and acting like a Christian will never get you to holiness, it is only in relationship, understanding, and obedience that we grow to walk in the fullness of God. When Yeshua, (Jesus) walked this earth he kept in constant communication and relationship with the father so that every step he took was guided and instructed by God. Jesus said to the disciples...”You shall do these things and greater.” The Son of God himself telling his disciples hey I’m doing these things right now and guess what, you’re going to be doing them also but more, WOW! Now think for a moment, the great things that Yeshua did on this earth we should and can be doing. You ask why aren’t we doing them today? Why are people just being Christians and not walking in the power of God like Yeshua (Jesus) did?

Here it is, RELATIONSHIP! That’s right, RELATIONSHIP! With God, His Spirit, and His Son. You see Yeshua walked in the power of God 24/7 because he was in constant

fellowship with his father, Enoch was taken by God because he walked closely with him and knew him. Can you imagine? It is sad to say that today the body of Christ, the Church, is weak and walking in excuses, lacking the very essence of the Supernatural POWER of God that Jesus walked in. why? Because they are teaching you how to learn about life but, not about the Giver of Life, God, not how to walk with God in his supernatural power. There is a formula that was given to us since the beginning of time, very simple…. One part communication, one part humility, one part prayer, one part stillness, one part willingness, three parts obedience.

Put this all together and you have a powerful Supernatural walk with God. You will do these things and greater, just think for a moment how important it is to know your Father, your Creator, that when the day comes you will stand before him and say...

”That is my God, my Father, I know him, and he knows me!”

This November Floridians will take to the ballot box to decide whether or not to legalize medical marijuana by voting on Amendment 2. There are clear divisions on this issue and the line has been drawn in the sand. The latest Quinnipiac University poll shows 88% of registered voters in Florida would approve marijuana for medical use vs. 10% opposed to the idea. This election cycle will make for interesting studies for years to come. Typically, in off year elections, voter turnout in Florida drops significantly resulting in below 50% of eligible voters coming to the polls. However, the issue of medical marijuana is a game-changer.

According to pubmed.gov, there are over 15,000 studies related to cannabinoids and

their medicinal effects. Phyto-cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant which effect the human body’s endocannabinoid system. The human body naturally produces compounds similarly found in marijuana. These regulate bodily functions such as sleep, mood, pain, and appetite. This is why medical marijuana has such a significant impact on such a wide variety of ailments.

Yet, regardless of how much research contradicts the current scheduling of marijuana, some in America and Florida remain in opposition. So to clearly outline the argument for the undecided voter, we will examine the pros and cons of legalizing medical marijuana in Florida.

In 1972, the US Congress placed marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act because they considered it to have “no accepted medical use.” Since then, 22 of 50 US states and DC have legalized the medical use of marijuana.

The Medical Marijuana Question in Florida By Christopher Carlos Cano, M.P.A.

LULAC Florida Deputy State Director for Young Adults

Pros of Medical Marijuana in Florida Due to Florida’s aging population and significant military presence of former veterans, medical marijuana will bring relief to those suffering from many age-related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Dementia, and Cancer; in addition to PTSD and pain caused by battlefield injuries.

A well regulated medical cannabis industry will do much more than bring increased health and quality of living to Florida residents. It will generate revenues for state coffers if implemented properly. Studies show Florida could have nearly a billion dollar industry within 5 years.

Medical Marijuana in Florida could potentially reach 400,000 patients state-wide. This would give the patients immunity from legal sanctions and prosecution for possessing, using, and cultivating medical marijuana.

Cons of Medical Marijuana in Florida Allergies to cannabis pollen are prevalent in a portion of the population much of the same way hay fever affects many adults. This is one reason why physicians will need to take a continuing education course to be certified to recommend medical marijuana.

Medical Marijuana as an industry will require trained Public Administrators to regulate and effectively collect tax revenues. In addition, cannabis therapy will bring direct competition to existing pharmaceuticals that are for more ineffective in treating illness.

A reduction in prisoners being arrested for marijuana will significantly impact the federal grant money received for drug interdiction to Florida sheriffs and other law enforcement agencies. This will also mean less prisoners for Florida’s private prison industry.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) met with Foreign Minister of Panama Francisco Álvarez de Soto on Tuesday evening to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela, its negative consequences for the hemisphere, and Panama’s efforts to ensure that inclusive organizations, such as the Organization of American States, continue to be the hemisphere’s main forum to address issues of regional interest.

Rubio and Álvarez de Soto discussed their shared concern over the violence plaguing Venezuela, as well as the need for Panama to continue on a democratic path where government institutions operate without political interference.

“I commend the Panamanian government for courageously standing with the people of Venezuela, for the Inter-American Democratic

Charter, and against the brutal repression of peaceful demonstrators in Venezuela,” Rubio said. “For over two months, tens of thousands of Venezuelans have risked their lives to demand a more democratic and hopeful future for their country. President Maduro has met their legitimate demands with bullets, torture and unjust incarcerations.

“Venezuela has become an authoritarian military regime right before our eyes, but shamefully, most countries in the region have chosen to either look the other way or to gloss over the brutality inflicted by the Maduro regime on the Venezuelan people,” Rubio added. “The United States’ support is important, and I am proud that Panama has taken a strong interest and leadership role to find a legitimately inclusive solution to the political crisis affecting Venezuela.”

The study released by Pew’s Hispanic Trends Project used the Census Bureau’s 2012 American Community Survey as the basis for its findings. Pew found that about 3.8 million of Florida’s 19.3 million residents were born outside of the country.

Only California, New York and New Jersey recorded a higher

percentage of foreign born residents.

That is a 41 percent increase from 2000 when 2.7 million Floridians were found to be foreign born.

The most common birthplace among the foreign born population is the Caribbean followed by South America, the study found.

A NEW STUDY BY THE PEW RESEARCH CENTER SHOWS NEARLY ONE IN FIVE FLORIDIANS 19.5 PERCENT –– IS FOREIGN BORN.
