Latin America Latin America can be divided into 3 sub-regions:
Central America & Mexico (Mexico + 7 Countries)
The Caribbean (Bahamas, Greater/Lesser Antilles, West Indies)
Lowlands of the Amazon River basin hold many rich, natural resources including species found nowhere else & possible treatments for a # of diseases. The Amazon River Basin is the largest rainforest in the world.
The Amazon RiverSecond longest river, and largest by waterflow
Main source of the Amazon River (Iquitos, Peru)Why here???
Lake TiticacaLake Titicaca is in the Andes MountainsA number of lowlands & river basins to the east, fed by runoff from the Andes
Bodies of WaterAtlantic OceanPacific OceanGulf of MexicoCaribbean SeaAmazon R.Orinoco R.Uruguay R.Magdalena R.Sao Francisco R.Lake TiticacaLake MaracaiboRio de La PlataParana R.
Amazon River BasinReasons for deforestation:Subsistence farmersCommercial farming & loggingGovt policiesWorld Bank mistakes
The Amazon contains sources of lumber, gold, and gems.Countries with poor economies have reason to exploit, not preserve.Spontaneous fires are also a danger here.Fires burning in the Amazon Basin
Destruction of the Amazon Basin has occurred at an alarming rate and in a number of countriesBecause the problem is multinational, any solution will take cooperative efforts.
In the isolated regions of the Guiana Highlands (as in the Amazon River Basin), there are many indigenous groups with unique lifestyles. These tribes are an example of ?

Andes Mtn RangeWorlds highest range outside of Asia which implies that they are ?
Longest range in the world
Most people in the Andes live below 11,500 feet. Cuzco, Peru 10,912 ft. La Paz, Bolivia 11,942 ft.
Altitudinal zonation is found in this region.
Argentina/Chile - From glaciers and desert.
Why are climates so diverse in L.A.?Climates range from tropical moist to highlands to dry.
Central Chile has a Mediterranean climate productive farms and grazing lands are found here. Why is the climate here so nice?Argentina and Brazil also have grassland regions
Valleys Plains and BasinsAmazon BasinPampasMato GrossoGran ChacoLlanos
DesertsAtacama DesertAtacama Desert is the driest in the world with less than .04 inches of rain a year.
The Atacama Desert is kept dry by:Humboldt currentEast of Chilean Coast RangeWest of Andes
Other FeaturesFalkland IslandsCape HornPanama CanalGalapagos Islands
Angel Falls- Highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world is located in VenezuelaPanama Canal was built to ease travel/commerce between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
The Panama Canal
The Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador are used for research and ecotourism bringing much needed revenue into Ecuadors economy.
Environment/Nature How do physical features impact climate & vegetation in Latin America?
How do physical/environmental factors influence settlement patterns?

World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Machu Pichu what is it? WHERE is it? Peru in the Andes Mountains
9AAlthough Mexico is technically part of North America, it is culturally more similar to South America, so this region is known as Latin America. Latin America is 3x the size of the USABrazil is the largest country with about of the population of South America living here. *Average discharge of 7,381,000 cubic feet/second Largest drainage basin in the world (2.7 million square miles) 150 miles wide at its estuary (where it empties into the Atlantic)
More water flows through the Amazon than the next 7 rivers (in terms of flow) combined
Three-toed sloths are found nearly exclusively in the Amazon rainforest.
The flowering four oclock (lower left picture) is a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Some researchers believe that the cure for cancer may be found in the rainforest.World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Why here? Runoff from AndesWorld Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Tatora Reed boats on Lake Titicaca Lake Titicaca is at 12,507 feet elevation
Andes are the source for a number of bodies of water (see the next slide)
World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Numerous important bodies of water in L.A. many rivers originate in the Andes and flow east across S.A., providing water resources for the interiorWorld Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*The Amazon rainforest is being destroyed in many tropical countries - the majority of deforestation results from the actions of poor subsistence cultivators.in Brazil only about one-third of recent deforestation can be linked to "shifted" cultivators. Historically a large portion of deforestation in Brazil can be attributed to land clearing for pastureland by commercial and speculative interests, misguided government policies, inappropriate World Bank projects, and commercial exploitation of forest resources.
Video on this slide is one I showed back at the beginning of the year
World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*The desire to increase their countries wealth and resources also endanger efforts to save the rainforest. How do we (the UN, for instance) tell a country that they cant exploit resources within their own borders?
Spontaneous fires result from careless campers/hikers, as well as ligtning strikes. They destroy animal habitats and increase soil erosion, as well as harm the regions economy due to the expense of fighting fires and homes/businesses lost.World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Which countries are seeing deforestation? Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, Brazil
Focusing solely on the promotion of sustainable use by local people would neglect the most important forces behind deforestation in Brazil.Global interests in the rainforest must be addressed.
World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Although the damage is significant, the rate of deforestation has been slowing in the past decade.World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*These diverse groups still speak their native languages, hold native beliefs, dress, etc. Many live on protected reserves.
This is an example of cultural divergence Isolation has allowed these groups to retain their unique nature, protecting them from assimilation into the urban, European population
One result of deforestation in the Amazon is that these areas are now being exposed to outisiders.
World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Longest continental mountain range in the world (4300 miles long Venezuela to Argentina). Average height of 13,000 feet. Worlds highest range outside of Asia. The highest peak, Mount Aconcagua, rises to an elevation of almost 23,000 feet (22,834). More than 50 volcanoes the highest volcanoes in the world.
This is a YOUNG mountain range formed 18-25 million years ago. (For comparison, the Rockies are 55-80 million years old.)
Which aspect of LEMPOSA explains that snowcapped mountains? Elevation
Highlands climates- For every 1000 ft. of elevation, temperature decreases by 3 degrees.
World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*La Paz about 20,000 peopleCuzco about 300,000 people
Q: Ask students why most people live in Cuzco as opposed to LaPazA: Because Cuzco is below 11,500 and breathing there is easier. Outsiders visiting La Paz require oxygen to breathe.
Mat, tea made with coca leaves, helps to relieve altitude sickness (Mat tea is made in other parts of S.A. without coca.)World Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*What grows in each altitude region? Students should know this from the reading Chart on page 259 purple book There WILL be questions on this on the testWorld Geography South America - Chapters 12 & 13llhammon*Patagonia Southern Argentina and ChileL = latitudeQ: Why do you suppose LA has such a wide array of climate regions? A: The region is LONG and covers multiple latitudes
