latest project--reconsidering decoration
DESCRIPTION
The studio looked into what decoration and ornament really can convey and if it is still important in design today. The site was 15 Commonwealth in Boston, a brownstone that is currently being renovated into a single family home. Our project was to design a luxury hotel within this space, with restrictions on the front and back facade because of the Back Bay Historical Commission.TRANSCRIPT

“The building has recently been gutted in preparation for a total reconstruction of the interior. Built as a fifteen thousand square foot single-family residence in 1865, it was one of the grandest houses in Boston. It is situated in the Back Bay Architectural District, so any changes to the exterior of the building have, since 1966, been regulated by a very active Historical Commission, a city government agency.”

THESIS STATEMENT
Through the exploration of materials, analysis of connections, and the introduction of an aggragated, abstract system of order and decoration, the 15 Commonwealth luxury hotel will provide a dialogue between the historic ideals of the past, and a newly adapted design of the present day “Boston Brahmin”.
