What a lovely evening kicked off when Loi became a bus driver for the night and picked everyone up from home with barman Phil handing out the drinks on the road trip

The staff at the Piano Bar at The Roey really looked after us very well and the food was both very pleasant and well priced After suitable quantities of food and drink had been consumed the serious business of the night was undertaken - with Commodore Miranda awarding of this years prizes

Shinju Regatta - This is the first year BSC has been involved in the Shinju Matsuri Regatta sailing two races in the Carnival of the Seas The combined corrected times of the two events was used to determine the winner The Trophy presented was originally awared by the Broome Yacht Club for the 1985 Shinj Regatta and has been housed at the Broome Museum to date There are no details known about this event or indeed even who won it However it makes a most suitable perpetual trophy for BSC to award into the future And the Winner was Phil Aagren sailing Mariah

Junior Sailing TrainingLumpy and bumpy

The final class of 2012 junior sailing training run by Broome sailing Club took place on Sunday morning The level 2s expecting high hopes and the sole level one keen to qualify and finish his course But completely opposite winds to our dry season had kicked ina steady 15kt south westerly with a short lumpy sea greeted the students on the Gantheaume beach at 8am

After a recap on previous lessons and the knowledge they should have by now the rigged the Pacer yachts and one by one with safety boat on the water they took to the rising surf that thumped down on Gantheaume beach Sunday morning New lessons were learnt some scary moments were had but all proved they had learnt their boat handling skills and without an instructor in the 3 Pacer yachts there were no capsizes

All sailed out and about over the pre determined course learning new skills in a new south westerly environment Gone were the easterly flat seas and light windsthe complete opposite rounded off their sailing skills The extremes the students have now experienced is as good as Broome can throw at you in our perfect sailing of Broome See photos athttpspicasawebgooglecomBroomeWaters2012_1021BSCTraining

Instructors John Meika and Phil were very pleased with the outcome for the 2nd season of training for BSC and outlined that sailing will continue once a month through the wet season at Gantheaume (dates will be on the wwwbroomesailingcluborgau web site) Students are now encouraged to utilise the Pacers get their own yachts crew with existing members There are plenty of options prior to the next level of Training that BSC will run next season which will be Better Sailing and Racing Skills 1

Race 25 amp 26

The planned last two races for BSC saw the cat sailors abandon their cats in favour for a bit of match racing in the Pacers sailing one up The loan ring in was the Dayman-Diss 470 yacht So a short course was set using

existing marks the seas and wind had built from this morning and the races were onor were they

The lone boat at the starting area was the Dayman-Diss 470 which literally rocked out through the surf and away on the wind and the seas But back on shore there was a lost rudder pin broken centre plate and some very wet Pacers and skippers who had had trouble getting them through the now even lumpier surf at Gantheaume So the safety boat came and flew the race abandoned flag for the lone 470 surfers and after a brief rip around to make the most of the great sailing conditions they returned to shore

These are the conditions we will expect for the next 6 months so we had better settle in and get used to them With the BSC presentation night coming up juniors and parents are all encouraged as they are all part of the club and we look forward to some great wet season sailing for the first time in BSC history

9th September - Shinju Matsuri Carnival of the Sea - BSC

Race 19 amp 20

The Carnival of the Sea was always going to be a big day for Broome Sailing Club for this is the first time BSC has taken part in Shinju Matsuri

It started on Sunday with the juniors taking part in BSCs third training course for 1012 out in the usual blustery easterly wind whistling off Gantheaume Point beach making sailing very challenging The current trainees are a mixture of newbies and the boys who completed the Basic Skills 1 Course last month who liked it that much they are back to do the next advanced Level 2 Sailing Skills Luckily the BSC Pacer yachts have the ability to reduce sail to make sailing in windy conditions less risky and enabling the students to concentrate on their sailing skills rather than simply keeping the boats upright in the gusty conditions The Level 2 boys are being coached by BSCs expert trainers from the Safety RIB whilst the other students are now at the level to go out without an instructor on the boats with them But yet another successful training session for the juniors and those Level 2 students who are now at the helm going out without instructors and learning the difficult manoeuvre of gybing and further enhancements of sail trimming and boat handling

As Training progressed the BSC club house was quickly packed up and relocated to the area in front of the Broome Surf Club - the BSC club trailer was set up and what followed was a series of two races held in front of all the beach goers and spectators on Cable Beach getting in as close as regulations will allow and using short courses Unfortunately with the busy

lifestyle that Broome peole have the fleet wasnt as big as we had hoped with a couple of key people out with injuries and others out of town Seven boats completed their two races and Phils new arrival the Fireball got its first baptism in Broome waters

The day was quiet and Stan with his Nacra catamaran was able to take out both races with Miranda on her Hobie 16 cat second in both Third place was more hotly contested with Phil Aagrens Flying Dutchman mono hull coming third in the first race and the Alex in his Cat coming third in the second But The new Fireball did get a win on Yardstick in the second race which put a smile on Phil Coxs face After the fleet had returned to Gantheaume Point and packed up all BSC members returned to enjoy the hospitality of the Broome Surf Club We thank the Shire of Broome for their help and Rob Aristei President of Broome Surf Club for all their efforts also Photos can be viewed athttpspicasawebgooglecomBroomeWaters2012_0909CarnivalOfTheSeas

1st July - Junior Training Program

Another blustery Sunday Morning Six willing but slightly chilled kids waited for their lesson enthusiastically With some of the boys coming from 12 Mile I think they were unaware of how chilly the wind on the beach was going to be But as lesson one taught them they should have warm clothes at the ready for sailing

Sarah Liddiard BSCs head instructor reviewed last lesson and then we added a few new knots to their repertoire of essential yachty knots some warm up exercises in the sun and stratches and then a quick morning tea of healthy oranges before rigging up two of the training Pacers for the one the water fun part of the morning

With one reef in each main to reduce the sail area and with more and more of the rigging being done by the trainees we hit the water with a blustery easterly as usual for Sunday mornings this time of the year After a quick review on the water of what they had already been shown they were handed their next lessonthe control of the main sheetthe heart and soul of the power of a the yachts Up and down Ganth beach the Pacers scooted with each recruit having a go some even got to have another steer by themselves to brush up their helming skills With the ever watchful eye of the BSC RIB beside the boats they completed nearly an hour of up and down main sheet in and out helm this way and thatall part of the course and learning learning all the time

At the end of the sailing session it was time for the best to be lastthe capsize drill in the water So in adult neck deep water in turn three students capsized the Pacer and demonstrated the skills required to safely right the boat and clamber back on board ready to sail off It was a bit chilly for the smaller boys but a vital link in the safety of sail training and the water is certainly cooling off in Broome

Following a rush to get dry and warm the usual debrief occurred and boats washed de-rigged and packed away ready for next lessons at the end of July after School Holidays Each student received their YAWA handbook and official Logbook for some holiday reading We look forward to the next sessions as this group is going great guns

The courses were short and sharp the start lines hotly contested at times And as luck would have it each race ended with the same resultsPhil Agrens Flying Dutchman won both John and Carolines 470 came second Loi Odore in a club Pacer() third in each race Frank Burgess on his Windrush came a solid fourth in each race looking very relaxed as usual and Jack on his cat came next in each race for his FIRST EVER races with his new boat

Jack is in year 9 at St Marys and only purchased the boat late last year so it was ideal for him to sail Sunday and a great job he did Alex jumped ship from crewing with Loi to sail the second race with Alex on his cat All back on the beach by 430 for home made burgers and a frothyanother great day with Broome Sailing Club

17th June - Junior Training

Today saw the first class of junior sail training happen for 10 years olds upwards on Gantheaume Beach run by Broome Sailing Club(BSC)

A typical morning breeze greeted the first junior class after their training on the basics and safety drills in the event the boats tip over But after the beach training they hit the water to a blustery easterly whistling over the dunes

There were woops of joy as they leant out to hold the boats upright as they scooted up and down the beach under the watchful experience of the two instructors After an hour of on the water stuff including the trainees even having a steer of the Pacer yachts in the puffy conditions they came

ashore and used the new ghost busters cleaner to wash the boats debriefing and a few more knots before finishing at 12noon for their first lessonback again in two weeks JOHN DAYMAN

17th June - Race 9 amp 10

Racing for the afternoon was looking good for oncethere was wind Two races were planned and for once they were actually completed After a great start by the new 470 Loi and his new crew Anton(one of our 2011 junior sailors) first around the first mark followed by the 470 and the Hobie 16 of Miranda Dibdin After the race was done it was a race of changing places as the short course with some breeze can create leaving Miranda first place followed by Loi and Anton the the 470 of John and Caroline Shortly after the finish of the first race the second race was started and some severe wind changes saw Loi and Anton win the second race followed by Miranda and the the 470 of John Great day as always after with BBQ and a quiet one or two Anyone interested in joining the club should drop down on a sailing day and full results and photos can be seen on this BSC web site

Racing for the afternoon was looking good for oncethere was wind Two races were planned and for once they were actually completed After a great start by the new 470 Loi and his new crew Anton(one of our 2011 junior sailors) first around the first mark followed by the 470 and the Hobie 16 of Miranda Dibdin After the race was done it was a race of changing places as the short course with some breeze can create leaving Miranda first place followed by Loi and Anton the the 470 of John and Caroline Shortly after the finish of the first race the second race was started and some severe wind changes saw Loi and Anton win the second race followed by Miranda and the the 470 of John Great day as always after with BBQ and a quiet one or two Anyone interested in joining the club should drop down on a sailing day and full results and photos can be seen on this BSC web site

May 2012 - Pacer Training Boats

Lawson Klopper of Klopper Holdings has most generously

donated a fleet six Pacer training dinghies all contained on a purpose

built trailer These are already in full use during the current Adult

Training Course and will be used in the forthcoming Junior Training

Course

The Pacers have also been used in the first

series of five fleet races (raced using an experienced skipper with

novice crew member These will prove a valueable asset in the

development of Broome Sailing Club

Lawson Klopper of Klopper Holdings has most generously

donated a fleet six Pacer training dinghies all contained on a purpose

built trailer These are already in full use during the current Adult

Training Course and will be used in the forthcoming Junior Training

Course

The Pacers have also been used in the first

series of five fleet races (raced using an experienced skipper with

novice crew member These will prove a valueable asset in the

development of Broome Sailing Club

May 2012 - Pacer Training Boats

Lawson Klopper of Klopper Holdings has most generously

donated a fleet six Pacer training dinghies all contained on a purpose

built trailer These are already in full use during the current Adult

Training Course and will be used in the forthcoming Junior Training

Course

The Pacers have also been used in the first

series of five fleet races (raced using an experienced skipper with

novice crew member These will prove a valueable asset in the

development of Broome Sailing Club
