It’s not just celebs who make Brighton what it is. Behind the scenes, alot of work is done to keep the city moving and growing. This week Imet one of those hard-working public servants – Mary Mears, leader ofour Council no less!

Mary was born in Brighton and represents Rottingdean on thecouncil. She reached the top by sheer persistence in talking about theissues she knew were important to ordinary people in the city. Her mainpassion is housing, and she believes it’s everybody’s right to have a roofover their head.

Outside of politics, she helps run her family’s local business, and likesto walk, cook, read about history and spend time with her grandchildren.

How did you get your start in local politics? I’ve always been passionate about local issues, and I’ve never stayedquiet about what I believe in. The local Conservative party saw this,selected me as a candidate, and in 1992 I was elected as a councillor forMarine Ward on the old Brighton Council.

What would you be doing had you not become leader of the council?I would be working in the voluntary sector with the local community. I’dalso be helping with the family business, as I am now on weekends; it’s awholesale and retail greengrocers.

Which famous person would you like to be?I would like to be someone who was a strong, decisive leader. I thinkMrs Thatcher was a great leader because she cared deeply about reformand really got things done.

What is your biggest regret?I don’t have any regrets in my public life, but I would have liked to havehad more children because my family life is very important to me.

Which song do you like to sing when you are in the shower?I don’t sing in the shower, I sing when I am ironing. I hate ironing and Ialways sing ‘I want to break free.’

If you were given £200,000, what would you do with it?I would give £100,000 to my young family and the other £100,000 toresearch for cancer.

Fantasy dinner partyWhich seven people would youinvite and why?First I’d have Judy Finnegan(of Richard & Judy), because she is areal teaser and she gets on well witheveryone. Simon Schama, thesuperstar of modern historiansbecause I enjoy history and he issuch an interesting person. When hewas on that Question Time panel inAmerica before the election heshowed just what an intelligent andinsightful commentator he is. Zoe Ball, our local guru and a really nice person. Stephen Fry, to bringsome good humour to the party. Giles Brandreth, he is an excellent afterdinner speaker, and deliciously indiscreet. Paula Radcliffe MBE, she is socommitted, dedicated and competitive. Brighton-based author LouiseRennison, I like her cheeky humour.

Where would you hold your party?It would be in the dinning room in the Royal Pavilion, to give us a senseof history.

What food would you serve?Locally caught fish with chips, mushy peas and crusty bread, followedby a fantastic cheese board with lots of different wines and ports.

What sort of music or entertainment would you have and why?I would have the Brighton Gay Men’s chorus, they are an excellent choirand also very entertaining.

What would you talk about?We would talk about history, politics,sports and competitions.

Is there anything you want to ask any of them?Yes, I would like to ask Zoe when is Fatboy Slim’s next Beach Boutique?

Which one of your guests would you go home with and why?A lady never talks about that.

Well, that’s what we’d all like this Christmas,isn’t it – to spread a little comfort and joyabout the place? Yahoo job losses Yahoo are to start making 1500 people redundant in the US. The joblosses are part of a plan announced in October to save £270 million bythe end of this year.

Chrome update Google have issued the first official ‘non-beta’ release of its Chromeweb browser. The news officially takes Chrome out of its beta (test)period, signifying that Google believes the browser is good enough tobe issued as a final release. Brighton and Hove Estate Agents Association(BHEA) is celebrating a successful yeardespite a difficult market. The association,which represents property professionalsranging from estate and lettings agents toauctioneers, surveyors and propertymanagers, is drawn from about 78 local firmsand numerous individual members and raised£4,500 for charity.

The year began in January with the AnnualGeneral Meeting where Jane Wilkinson,Sussex director for Leaders lettings agent,was elected president. She made history asthe first woman to hold the post since BHEAwas founded in 1886. She, said: “It was agreat honour for me to be the first ladypresident. I was very keen to follow thetraditions we have always had. The associationhas always been really focused on puttingback into the community.“

The following month more than 450members attended the Annual Dinner, wherethe speaker was comedian Frank Carson. Janesaid she was impressed by the generosity ofmembers. She said: “A lot of people hadalready begun to feel the pinch and they stilldug deep into their pockets and we reallyraised a good amount. It was a verysuccessful evening.“

One of the association's aims is to promotea strong ethical business model and membershave to abide by a strict code set to suit the

local market. Joining costs only £50 per persona year. Membership reassures customers, staffand other business contacts that they aredealing with a trustworthy company.

There are many other benefits, such asaccess to training days, advice and support.This year BHEA hosted a seminar free ofcharge for members with talks on energyperformance certificates, HIPs, moneylaundering, the tenancy deposit scheme,employment law and redundancies.

One issue BHEA is currently addressing isthe proposal to ban sales and lettings boardsfrom great swathes of the city. The associationis appealing against the move by Brighton andHove City Council and is waiting for a decisionfrom the Secretary of State. It could beextremely harmful not only to agents who arefacing a tough trading climate, but to vendorsand potential buyers.

The council of the BHEA, is made up ofexperts from every part of the industry. Itmeets once a month for two hours to addressany pressing issues. The treasurer, secretary,president and vice president are elected everyyear. There are at least five other memberswho are elected for three years.

Hugh Tucknott, an associate partner ofParsons, Son and Basley and the BHEA'simmediate past president, said: “We are thereto decide which direction the associationtakes to deal with complaints that come infrom other agents or from the public.“

In July, the BHEA held its annual cricketmatch. There are also golf tournaments,including the Presidents Cup betweenassociation members and a match against the

Law Society. In September was the StanmerStagger, completed by a number of agentsand Latest Homes business director AngiMariani. Set in beautiful Stanmer Park, thisfive-mile multi-terrain run is an annual event insupport of Shelter. This year it was won by 15-year-old Tom Goldsmith who completed thecourse in 31 minutes, 31 seconds.
