the immortality of the soul- How dreadful ,but how plausible(seemingly

valid) this is to those of what he read.

I AM A CATHOLIC by virtueof my believing in a God;and if I am asked why Ibelieve in a God, I answerthat it is because I believein myself, for I feel itimpossible to believe in myown existence (and of thatfact I am quite sure)without believing also in

the existence of him, wholives as a Personal, All-seeing, All-judging Being inmy conscience ...

One day a man saw aflower in which he thoughtI am more powerful thanthis flower, can it be thatthere is a more powerfulbeing than myself.

Newman pondered on thisand he believed that thereis some other greater thanus and our existence prove

    his existence.

    A religious mind is ever

    looking out of itself, is

    ever pondering God's

words, is ever "lookinginto" them with the

    angels, is ever realizing

to itself him on whom it

depends, and who isthe center of all truth

    and good.

    Newman surrendered

    all his intelligence in

    the name of searching

    the truth.

    For the truth is the

    center of all good.

Truth is found withinyou, inside oneself.

Carnal and proud mindsare contented with self;they like to remain athome; when they hear ofmysteries, they have nodevout curiosity to goand see the great sight, though it be ever so little

out of their way; andwhen it actually falls intheir path, they stumbleat it

In this line we see thatthe minds of those whowant to be alone do notexplore therefore they donot grow.

When faced with amystery they wouldrather avoid it that to

    explore it.

For Newman, humilitya child-like spiritis anecessary condition for belief.

When God reveals himself man must act onGods terms, accepting with humility whatGod reveals.

~Man must have humility so that he may

realize that there is something morepowerful than him.Which what Newmanbelieved as his God.

Much lies in the meaning of the wordscertainty and doubtmuch again in ourduties to a person, as e.g. a friendReligion

is not merely a science, but a devotion.

-In this Newman gives an example of the kind

of duty we have to a friend. That it is like

religion.- It is not a science, it is a devotion.

    - -This is what Newman did to his life.

Obedience of faith still holds claim of the

believers mind, which subjects itself to God

who reveals himself and speaks through the

    Church.

    - Obey and he shall reveal himself to you and

    there you may assent.
