Adobe Illustrator

CS6 Classroom in

a Book (August

2012 Update)

AddendumThis ”What’s new” guide provides a hands-on tour of the most important features and improvements to Adobe® Illustrator® CS6 in the update released in August 2012 for Adobe Creative Cloud™ members, and is intended as a supplement to the existing Adobe® Illustrator® CS6 Classroom in a Book®.

The following What’s New dialog box will appear the first time Illustrator is launched after updating.

The update includes several enhancements to Adobe Illustrator that touch upon working with embedded image files, the Links panel, and gathering files for sending to others (called packaging). The only lesson in the Illustrator Classroom in a Book to be affected in any way by these updates is Lesson 15, “Combining Illustrator CS6 Graphics with Other Adobe Applications.”

Here is an overview of the new and enhanced features found in the Adobe Illustrator CS6 August 2012 update:

• Package files: You can now efficiently hand off Illustrator files to production by automatically packaging the necessary fonts, linked graphics, and a package report in a single folder.

• Unembed images: If your Illustrator document contains embedded bitmapped images, this command lets you extract them in TIFF or PSD format. The extracted images are then linked to the original Illustrator file.

• Links panel enhancements: You can now efficiently track and access complete information on any artwork placed within an Illustrator file, directly from the Links panel. This includes file information such as format, resolution, dimensions, color space, and more.

15Combining

Illustrator CS6

Graphics with

other Adobe

ApplicationsThe project for this lesson has only changed slightly in one section when using the Adobe Illustrator CS6 (August 2012) update for Creative Cloud members. However, there have been several additions and enhancements to the Links panel as well as the addition of a Package command. To learn more about these features, you can include the following steps in Lesson 15.

In Lesson 15, in the section “Embedding a Photoshop image with Layer comps,” follow the steps for embedding the file until you arrive at step 9 (page 433 in the print edition). To work with the link unembed feature, insert the following steps after step 9.

As was stated in Lesson 15, when images are embedded in Illustrator, a copy of the image is stored in the Illustrator file, and the Illustrator file size increases to reflect the addition of the placed file. Users can now unembed those images, removing them from the document and saving them in either the TIF or PSD file format but keeping them linked to the Illustrator file. This will make the Illustrator file smaller in file size and make it so that users can update the image content easily.

Next, you will unembed the market.psd file that was placed in Lesson 15.

1. With the marketposter.ai file open in Illustrator, choose Window > Links to open the Links panel.

In the Links panel, you will see a listing of all of the placed content, linked or embedded. You can tell when an image is embedded because in the Links panel an embedded icon appears to the right of the image thumbnail. Note: Images listed in the Links panel that show a name along with the

thumbnail are linked. Images that only show a thumbnail are typically embedded.

2. Click the market.psd image thumbnail in the Links panel, if not already selected.

Tip: When you select a linked or embedded image on an artboard, that content is selected in the Links panel automatically.

3. Choose Unembed from the Links panel menu.

Note: You can also embed linked images after they have been placed by selecting the image in the Links panel and choosing Embed Image(s) from the Links panel menu.

4. In the Unembed dialog box, navigate to the images folder in the Lesson 15 folder. Name the file market_unembed and make sure that the format chosen is Photoshop (.PSD). Click Save.

The image content is extracted from the Illustrator document and saved in the images folder as market_unembed.psd. The content in the Illustrator file is now linked to that image file. The name of the image will now appear in the listing in the Links panel, the embed icon is gone, and when the image is selected on the artboard, an X appears over the image indicating that it’s linked (with edges showing—View > Show Edges).

Continue on to page 434 in Lesson 15, to continue the lesson.

On page 440, step 6, when asked to “click the market.psd image to select it as well,” click the new “market_unembed.psd” image instead.

On page 442, step 12, replace the reference to “market.psd” with “market_unembed.psd.”

In the section entitled, “Finding Link Information” on page 444, you can replace steps 2 and 3 with the following to access the link information more easily.

2. Double-click the berries.psd image (which shows the name to the right of the thumbnail) to reveal the link information at the bottom of the Links panel.

Like the Links panel in Adobe InDesign, the Links panel in Illustrator now shows the link information at the bottom of the panel. You can access the information for a given image by double-clicking the name of the image or image thumbnail, or by selecting an image in the Links panel and clicking the Show Link Info triangle in the lower-left corner of the Links panel.

3. Click the Previous or Next arrow at the bottom of the Links panel to select the previous or next image in the list and show the link information.

4. To hide the link information click the Hide Link Info arrow above the link information area.

The last new feature that will be discussed is the Package command. This allows you to automatically copy the Illustrator file (.AI), fonts used, linked graphics, and a package report into a single folder. This is typically used for hand off to a service provider or to transfer the project to someone else.

At the end of page 445, step 7, you are asked to save the file. At this point, you can inject the following steps to see how this new feature works.

1. With the marketposter.ai file open and saved, choose File > Package.

Note: If the file you are attempting to package needs to be saved, a dialog box will appear indicating so.

2. In the Package dialog box, click the Choose Package Folder Location icon (the folder icon) to the right of the Location field and select the Lesson15 folder. Change the name of the folder to marketposter (removing “_Folder” from the default name). Illustrator will create a folder that it will copy the project files into.

Ensure that the following options are set in the Package dialog box:

• Copy Links: Selected (the default option)

• Collect Links in Separate Folder: Selected (the default option)

• Relink Linked Files to Document: Selected (the default option)

• Copy Fonts used in Document (Except CJK): Selected (the default option)

• Create Report: Selected (the default option)

Click Package.

Package Options Explained

The Package dialog box options require a bit more explanation, which you can find here:

• Copy Links: This option, when selected, will copy all of the linked graphics into the package folder. Embedded images do not need to be copied since they are embedded in the Illustrator document.

• Collect Links in Separate Folder: With this option selected, a “Links” folder will be created within the package folder and the images linked to the Illustrator document will be copied from their original locations into there.

• Relink Linked Files to Document: With this option selected, the links in the Illustrator file (.AI), in the package folder point to the graphics that were copied into that same folder, rather than to the original graphics.

• Copy Fonts used in Document (Except CJK): With this option selected, fonts are copied from their original locations (usually on your hard drive) to the package folder. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) fonts will not be copied. Also, certain fonts that have licensing restrictions may not be copied.

• Create Report: With this option selected, a .txt file will be generated and placed into the package folder that contains pertinent information about the collected Illustrator file and it’s linked assets. Included in this information is linked and embedded image information, font information, spot color usage, and much more.

3. If the Copy Fonts Used in Document (Except CJK) is selected when you package, a licensing restriction dialog box appears. This dialog box discusses the intended use of packaged fonts. Click OK.

Note: Clicking Back in this dialog box will take you back to the package options, allowing you to deselect the Copy Fonts Used in Document (Except CJK) before proceeding again.

4. If a dialog box asking you to save the file appears, click Save and replace the original marketposter.ai file.

5. At this point, a success dialog box should appear. Click Show Package to reveal the package folder and its contents.

6. Review the folder contents, then close it and return to Illustrator.

Note: This project has no fonts associated with the document. All fonts have been converted to outlines.

At this point, you can continue with Lesson 15 (page 446 in the print edition).
